He didn't defy it, it merely didn't affect him. See Council of Elrond, FotR. Bombadil is merely a genus locii, his power is nigh supreme where he resides but that is all. If Sauron had his ring and attacked, Bombadil dies.

You’re absolutely right-Bombadil doesn’t resist the Ring; it simply doesn’t register in his world. As Gandalf and Elrond note during the Council, Bombadil’s power is immense within his domain, but it’s entirely localized. He embodies harmony with his environment, making him more a protector of his small realm than a player in the larger struggle of Middle-earth. Don’t forget to subscribe for more lore-filled discussions. What do you think would happen if Sauron ever truly clashed with Bombadil? Let’s discuss!

Elron may have been the saddest character in all Tolkiens works. Lost his brother and daughter to time, wife to orcs, sons to ??? “Maybe they will follow me”. Sad dude.
@StoriesoftheRings

Absolutely, Elrond's story is filled with loss and sacrifice. He bridges the gap between the timeless Elves and the mortal world, but that position comes at a cost. Losing his brother Elros to mortality and his daughter Arwen to love and death must have been unimaginably painful, not to mention the bittersweet uncertainty of whether his sons will follow him to Valinor or remain in Middle-earth. His wife, Celebrían, leaving due to trauma inflicted by Orcs adds another layer of heartbreak. Elrond is a beacon of wisdom and resilience, but beneath that is a man burdened by centuries of loss. Sadness doesn’t weaken him-it deepens his character and shows the strength it takes to carry on.

Bombadil represents several groups of people. The hippie, the non-violent, the objectors, the pacifist…to put it short, Switzerland. Tolkien was a man of war and poetry. Here is a character that is powerful and charming, but in the battle of good versus evil, he will not choose a side. How many families were hurt because Tom chose NOT to take the ring and flop it into the volcano? His indifference caused pain and misery and torture. He is no hero. He is implicit in his lack of actions. He doesn’t care and that is his failing. Bomba is a warning to us all NOT to put up our walls and make a “sanctuary” and then forget about the world outside. The world needs good men and women to help fight the darkness. Sorry so long, but this is a deep subject.

Now that all of Beleriand is at the bottom of the ocean it wouldn't surprise me is some of the Nameless Things are hanging out there.
@StoriesoftheRings
@StoriesoftheRings 21 сағат бұрын
That’s an awesome theory! With Beleriand submerged after the War of Wrath, it’s entirely possible that the depths of the ocean could have become a haven for the Nameless Things-those ancient, shadowy beings that even Sauron and the Valar might not fully understand. Tolkien hinted at their existence in the deep places of the world, and the sunken remnants of Beleriand would be a perfect hiding spot. If you enjoy speculating about the unseen corners of Tolkien’s world, don’t forget to subscribe! We’d love to hear your take-what do you think the Nameless Things might really be? Bombadil frustrates me. And the fact that Tolkein did it deliberately is maddening. The idea that makes the most sense to me is that he is a manifestation of Eru Illuvatar. The fact that Gandalf goes to have a long tak with Bombadil instead of going to the Shire with the hobbits seems significant. After all, Eru Illuvatar was the one who sent Gandalf back after he died as a result of the battle with the balrog. And by sending him back he allowed Gandalf to use more of the power he couldn't use as Gandalf the Gray. If Eru was Tom then he and Gandalf coud have face to face discussions in a way that couldn't happen if Eru stayed as this amorphis being who is so far above everything and everyone else that he can't be felt as someone that any being could have a conersation with ever.
@StoriesoftheRings
@StoriesoftheRings Күн бұрын
You bring up an incredibly thought-provoking theory! The idea of Bombadil as a manifestation of Eru Ilúvatar makes sense in many ways-his immunity to the Ring, his carefree yet immensely powerful nature, and the unique dynamic it could create between him and Gandalf. If Gandalf did seek Bombadil out for guidance or wisdom before heading to the Shire, it could signify a moment of grounding or alignment with Eru’s will, which fits beautifully with your observation about Gandalf’s return as Gandalf the White. Tolkien’s genius lies in leaving these threads for us to unravel, even if it’s frustrating at times! You’re absolutely right-having Eru in a relatable form like Bombadil allows for that personal connection and dialogue, which is otherwise impossible given Eru’s divine nature. Thank you for sharing such a rich perspective! Be sure to subscribe to the channel for more deep dives into Middle-earth’s mysteries. Let’s keep exploring these fascinating ideas together!

If he is nothing but a shadow why can't he take possesion of a man? Like Demon possession. There were still men who were evil and might have welcomed Sauron's spirit into their body.Did Tolkein ever write about the possibility?
@StoriesoftheRings
@StoriesoftheRings 4 күн бұрын
Great question! While Tolkien doesn’t explicitly address the idea of Sauron possessing a mortal like a demon might, his works give us clues as to why it likely wasn’t possible. Sauron’s spirit, after the destruction of the One Ring, was greatly diminished. Tolkien described him as a “mere shadow of malice,” stripped of the power and influence he once wielded. Possession, in the way you describe, would require a level of strength and will that Sauron no longer had. His spirit was bound to Middle-earth but without the ability to affect it physically or mentally. His power was so tied to the One Ring that its destruction left him incapable of taking on a new form or controlling others directly. Additionally, Tolkien’s world operates on a principle of free will. Even those who served Sauron, like Saruman and the corrupted men of the East, did so out of their own choices rather than being forcibly possessed. Sauron’s strength lay in his ability to deceive and manipulate, not in directly overpowering the will of others. Once his manipulative tools were gone, he became impotent in a very literal sense. At the beginning of the video I state the line: "In Peter Jackson's movie adaptation, Elves and Men stood side by side..." I also make references to the films and the cinematic aspects of the shots so I thought this was very clear.

The Jackson movies are overrated Hollywood cr*p....explain to me how anybody could take a movie where legolas literally surfs down stairs on a shield at Helm's Deep seriously? Or how about the "meats back on the menu" scene where there are literally intestines flying through the air like it's a three stooges scene? If anybody has seen Jackson's other movies like Dead Alive, you know where it comes from, and the truth is....slapstick comedic elements have NO PLACE IN THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Christopher Tolkien said it best when he told Monde Magazine that, and I quote, "Jackson took my father's story and made an action film for teenage boys" and that sums it up PERFECTLY! They should have been dialogue driven dramas for adults, but instead the studio wanted to make as much money as possible and catered to the lowest intelligence audience with more "action". And what is Jackson's obsession with wet stringy hair like on denathor?

What happened to the elves that stayed? Like the Dwarves they suffered from a diminishing birth rate. Sure some probably intermarried with humans but as the generations went on that elvishness (is that a word???) was watered down. Like Aragorn who was fractionally elvish himself and distantly related to his wife Arwin in that he is a descendent of Elros, Arwin's uncle. For the actual Elfs that stayed Cirdan is proof they do age, just very slowly. It still isnt, to my mind, proven elfs are immortal as opposed to extremely long lived. Either way they do definitively age. Imagine aging and aging. Getting feeble and even dementia but never actually dying. That sounds like a fate as bad as death..... maybe worse. No wonder they wanted to go to the undying lands.

Good production quality for such a small channel. More on topic: Sauron was Morgoth's chief lieutenant, in the hierarchy that would technically make Sauron higher up than all the Balrogs and Dragons. But With Morgoth gone i suppose there were none that could impose this order of things.

What conversation between the Balrog and Sauron would boil down to… Sauron: “Hey old friend, remember me?” Balrog: *confused* "Mairon, is that you?” Sauron: “Yep. Long time no see. You look great, how are you?” Balrog: “I’m fine old friend. I should be the one asking that." Sauron: *confused* “Come again?” Balrog: “What, are you not using mirrors anymore? You look terrible, your aura is smaller, and you feel weak in power.” *genuine concern* “What happened to you? Your face, your hair, your hand?” Sauron: “It’s a long story, but to summarize; I made ring to enhance my power and even bound my soul to it but lost it and “died” about 3,000 years ago but I’m better now.” Balrog: “You bound yourself to a ring? Gothmog and Boldog were right, you truly are an idiot.” Sauron: *desperately trying to get to the point out of impatience* “Whatever, I started up the old empire in Mordor. You in or out?” Balrog: “Are Lord Melkor, Cpt. Gothmog, Kosmot, or even the pale Balrog around?” Sauron: ”…N…no.” Balrog: “Then get lost, ya ember haired pretty boy. And leave me in peace.” Sauron: *utterly done* “You dare speak to me in such a manner? Dare disobey me!? Listen well, you oversized…” Balrog ascends to true high, form and power: *cuts him off* “No YOU listen to ME, you deformed usurping weasel!” “I DON’T take orders from YOU! I *only* obey Melkor, Gothmog, or my Balrog kin! And they are all gone. Get off my lawn, and don’t come back. Sauron powering up: *stern yet raspy voice* “You DON’T want to do this.” Balrog: “Don’t bother, Mairon. We both know what happened the last time you fought a Balrog in single combat. And you were much stronger back then. Go home and leave me be *In* my home.”

Not too shabby, for an AI generated fan-fic. It could've used a sex scene between Legolas and Aragorn, however. In particular, "The Cost is Victory," is an interesting line in its dichotomy. The secondary meaning, that it was the price they paid for turning their enemies into allies and there was no true victory left to be had now they've gone down this path, is a nice subtle layer of subtext to add.

3:00 minute mark, "Gandalf himself recognized the danger immediately." Um. :) No, he didn't. When he tried to hold the exit door to the chamber of Mazarbul (where they'd just fled), he wasn't sure what he had faced, just that it nearly opened the door, and the struggle had collapsed the ceiling. When Gimli asked, Gandalf replied, "I do not know. ... What it was I cannot guess." If yer gonna put up something so deep in nerd territory, have a buddy or five do some fact checking. :)

That was Tolkien’s original rhyme: One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, One ring to bring them all, and on the sixth digit bind them; In the Land of Mordor where the GM shadows lie. He opted to change it for concision…some Maiar say…
