This is what a TV program about archaeology should be like. It's a pity Neil Oliver has gone doolally tap. He should be producing more stuff like this.

28:21...but you have to ask the question no one is asking "Wallace's hatred for the english" but what would drive a man to such hatred and brutality....what was done to him and his country for him to act in such a violent way ?

The Clan system was far being a Democracy. It was a strict feudal system with the chief holding the power of life and death over clan members. Certain positions of privilege gave some people more advantage than others. The lowest fared poorly, barely scraping a living and all were basically rent to their overlord to be used at his whim. As can be seen during the Highland clearances, the loyalty of the Clans was a one way street. The chiefs and lairds preferred profits over duty to their subjects and were quick to kick them off the land they had defended for centuries, in favour of sheep . If the Duke of Cumberland did anything worthwhile ,it was the destruction of the Clan system !

The Germans attacked France with 141 Divisions, 3.3 million men, over 10,000 guns and only 2,500 planes, they attacked Russia with the same kind of numbers and way more planes. Why would anyone think they could invade Britain with only 90,000 men? To quote Private Fraser, they would have been doomed! Their only chance was to destroy the Royal Navy and the RAF (fat chance) and somehow get 2 million men and 5,000 tanks across the channel.

The Home Guard was a whole lot more than old blokes with kitchen knives on broomsticks. What an amazing story!

I disagree surely the invasion barges would be escorted by battle ships with air cover, further more the channel would have been blocked with u boats,you never mention the fact there are thousands of paratroopers droped behind British lines therefore sandwiching British troops the battleships would have taken out a lot of coastal defences, I'm pretty sure the Germans would have overwhelmed the defenders

Overall poorly done. Perpetuates many myths and misconceptions that arose at the time it was made that have since been discredited with the release of documents that were still classified at the time. I.e., the number of paratroopers that drowned was very low. The flooded areas were only knee deep in most areas. This is a pretty inaccurate breakdown of events and battle formations and the analysis from Sandhurst "finest" is laughable.
@michaelhitchcock9255 Жыл бұрын
Section at 28:25 is totally incorrect. The Tiger tanks were not superior, in spite of firepower. The were prone to breakdown. The 88mm was also not the most powerful anti-tank gun. The Sherman Firefly variants of the Sherman tank carried a 17 pounder British anti-tank gun that had greater range, greater penetration and greater muzzle velocity than the German 88mm. The British and Canadian units had over 1k of these tanks, usually deployed with 1 firefly and 2 unmodified Shermans per group. The Allies, therefore, did have tanks that were very capable against the German tanks. Also, the number of Tigers on the Western Front was always very low. About 90% of all Tigers made were deployed against the USSR on the Eastern Front.

Highlanders and democracy on the same line is an oxymoron. The highlanders lived just as medieval lords. Straight ou of th dark ages. The Lord was master and God.
