I'm as amature as it gets but I have been playing for years. Have any of the players on here had their playing improved noticably with a better bow?
@KennedyViolins2 күн бұрын
The bow is like the violin, in that the bow is very dependent on the quality of the player more than anything. The biggest differences you'll see in a bow, are only apparent with a higher-skill player. In my opinion, a beginner player should really focus on buying a bow that is made correctly and out of the right materials. Initially, this way of judging a bow will be perfectly fine. Don't spend a lot of money on a bow as a beginner. However, inexpensive bows are often not made well or out of interior materials, so just make sure that if it's wood, it's some kind of Brazilwood bow and it's straight longitudinally. If you cannot see the bow before buying, then just make sure it's a reputable seller or brand. 😉

@@KennedyViolins Thank you! I want to start playing again. I remember when I got a horse hair bow (wooden bow) not expensive after using synthetic for years. It seemed to me the horse hair bow made it possible for me to produce a much better sound but I wasn't sure how much of it was the bow or how much was the hours of playing I was doing back then. Funny question I suppose. Thank you for your answer. 🙂

@@Gandoff2000 Yes, it's true that there's a pretty big difference between a carbon fiber and a wood bow or synthetic hair VS real hair. Those differences can even be seen with a beginner sometimes. However, going from wood to wood or CF to CF is usually a difference that a beginner cannot hear or feel. 😉

Unfortunately, the Scales Plus book is not available for viola. Also, when I used to teach a lot, all my beginning type of students were all violinists and my viola students were all quite advanced. So, the only etude type of books I know of for viola are very advanced.

This maybe a stupid question, could heat it up a little like with a blow dryer would that work ?
@KennedyViolins11 күн бұрын
Actually, heating up rosin is a bad idea. If you move the bow too quickly across the surface of the rosin, it'll heat the cake up and the rosin will refuse to adhere to the hair. This is why your motions should be slower and more deliberate. Heating the rosin with a hair dryer would have the same effect. 😉 Here is a vid to provide more explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXamg4xnlLqnbposi=s8_a-PmwuaPwDdAp

The main problems I have detected are as follows: 1. Assembly defects: The violin tends to come apart in certain areas, raising concerns about the instrument’s durability and structural stability. 2. Electronic system issues: The system is not properly secured, causing unpleasant vibrations when it rubs against the wood. In an electric violin, every vibration unrelated to the strings muddies the sound, severely affecting the sonic experience. 3. Chinrest: The cork on the chinrest is incomplete, causing additional vibrations due to wood-to-wood contact. 4. Poorly glued reinforcement: Underneath the fingerboard, there is a reinforcement piece that is not properly glued, leading to further vibrations during play. The only parts I can say are in good condition are the case and the bow. However, I am very disappointed with this violin, as I expected better quality, especially considering the cost and the repairs I have already had to make, such as replacing the bridge with a carbon fiber one, thinking that was the source of the vibrations. Since this is an electric violin, even the movement of my fingers and hands while playing is clearly perceptible. You can imagine how frustrating it is to play with loose wires, poorly fitted parts, and vibrations resonating with certain notes. The sound is simply unpleasant. I deeply regret having to discard this instrument and seek another that prioritizes quality. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope you understand my disappointment.
@KennedyViolins12 күн бұрын
Hi there, I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues with your violin. Regarding the sound, the violin SHOULD sound rather awful acoustically, because it is designed to be played with amplification. I think any electric violin without a body will be this way. However, the "loose" parts, etc that you mention, can be an issue. There shouldn't be any loose parts on the instrument. Perhaps the violin has experienced some problems due to humidity or temperature changes and needs to be looked at. You can contact our customer service reps and they can help you with anything. You can send them pictures or video and they will replace the violin if necessary. You can email us at [email protected] or give us a call. We're always there for you!

I'm a beginner, but I want a violin that will be great even if I became an intermediate level, what of those would you recommend for me?
@KennedyViolins12 күн бұрын
Our two most popular violins for intermediates are the Carpini and the Henner. They are definitely "overkill" for a total beginner but you'll be able to play on these violins for many years and be very happy with the instrument. The bonus is that violins sound better with age, so the violins will sound better as you play them and improve yourself! Let me know if you have any other questions. 👍 kennedyviolins.com/collections/new-violin

Does the wood shell protect against heat and cold temperatures? And is it water repellant?
@KennedyViolins13 күн бұрын
Yes, any fairly air/water-tight enclosure will provide some protection from drastic temperature changes and the outside is water repellent but not forever. Generally, a musician will be exposed to the elements briefly when walking to school, gig, audition, etc, or waiting for a bus/Uber., so it's perfectly suited. The flaps on the enclosure offer a bit more protection than many cases because it helps rain not get into the case through the crack in the opening. I would never suggest leaving the violin in a hot/cold truck for long periods of time for any case though. That'd be bad for it's health! 😉

Joel, you do know that you're viola player, right?! 😂 All ribbing aside, I like this type of content, since I'm a violin and viola hack (enthusiast) lol. I'm not the greatest violin or viola player, but I can say from playing flutes, saxophones, and guitars that, if and when one is of sufficient experience to able to take the player's ability off the table, the choice is biased towards optimizing tonal character and fingering to achieve the best musicality. Voicing is important.. when I play or attempt to play violin or viola, I'm just happy if it sounds ok, even if it's not optimal.😂 😉 Anyhoo, thanks for taking the time to prepare these motivational videos. 👍🎻

Progress comes in sections sometimes growth might seem to stand still. The hard thing with violin is to reproduce the consistency every time you play. Irish Violin is interesting it can be the faultering can be points of interest of texture that can be delightful… however; Romantic Classical any faultering is deemed unforgivable. Well, I started learning the violin with private lessons in my 60s. i am now on suzuki book 7, but i cannot grasp vibrato. i can do the exercises, but i cannot transfer it to vibrato.
@KennedyViolins21 күн бұрын
Yes, vibrato is not a technique you know or don't know. It's a slow process that takes years and most of the time, a person is never fully satisfied with their vibrato and always feels that it'll get better in the future. It's a lifelong process with vibrato! The most important thing is to practice it with your warm-ups, every time you play the violin. The more you use it, the more flexible your muscles will become. However, if you leave it for a while, your muscles will tighten up and you're back to the beginning. It has to become a consistent habit, to truly improve.

@KennedyViolins21 күн бұрын
@@Shrinksjp Yes, it is very common to get stuck at a particular speed. Usually, it's because of a lack of consistency in using the vibrato exercise as a warm-up up every time you play the violin. If you leave it out here and there, you'll constantly be taking 1 step forward and 1 step back. You have to be consistent and sometimes, one speed will take a lot longer to get past. The biggest thing that holds a person back is the lack of flexibility in your hand. Flexibility is especially more difficult the older we get, so consistency and rest are key. You have to know when to stop the exercise, rest, and then try again. Eventually, you'll get the speed up. You really have to get fairly fast on the exercise before you can realistically use it with a piece. When you finally try it on a piece, it has to be a slow song that uses whole bows and long notes. It's quite a process but it yields results slowly over time. 😉
