If you speak English, there are only two reasons to learn German... 1. You plan on becoming a citizen of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Luxembourg. OR 2. Your job requires you to speak German. Otherwise, most educated Germans already speak English and if you run into one that doesn't, just pull out your smartphone and use Google Translate. You're welcome.

I came here to get paid, and get out. I respect the people, laws, culture. I have no wish to develop lasting friendships with the locals. I prefere to socially interact with other foreigners, in our broken german. I have a guard up when I am dealing with the natives. If he's of kind nature, respectful, polite I will reciprocate.

Foreigners getting stared is a common phenomenon. Happens everywhere. If you're different you're getting a lot of eyeballs. However, staring for the nice brand of clothes is different as its a kind of an admiring stare. I certainly wouldn't mind a admiring stares..im all yours people..but the problem is the stares full of disgust. Thats not welcomed. Thanks for covering this topic.

Superb analysis. I could definitely agree and relate to a few pointers. Especially the language part and trying to integrate with the culture of the host country. I am an Indian. Lived and studied in Germany for 4 yesrs. 3 years in TU Dresden and one year in Stuttgart. My initial months were tough with no friends. I was literally alone. Then i started to learn german. I could speak basics and i also tried to learn about the german culture by getting into community services. That made a huge difference. And germans make the best friends. I left Germany in 2008 and my german friends are still in touch with me. I have met some of the kindest and warmest people in Germany and also a few coldest and meanest. Also, subtle racism is there in Germany. Actually, racism is every where. Not just in Germany . But in a nutshell, my experience of staying and living in Germany was mostly positive. Any foreigners who are looking to move to Germany, please go the legal way (not illegally) and come prepared with german. Respect the host country's cultures and values, adapt (Germany wont adapt for you. Its you who needs to adapt) and trust me, you will have a great time there. Most germans are very cool. Ignore and avoid the assclowns.

This was a very helpful video. Since my personal goal is simply to be conversational, I really appreciate the part where you talked about most Germans just using the present and perfect tenses. Of course, I am learning all of them as I work through the book that I have, but it is nice to now know the two tenses to focus on the most in order to be able to just talk to someone in Germany like a cab driver or a person I meet on the street. I like to prioritize my efforts, instead of just being told, "You should learn it all".

Babbel will not get you very far in my opinion. The only way to do it is to constantly read, listen and speak the language. this means watching TV , podcasts, listening to news on telly and radio, reading newspaper articles, blogs and vlogs and novels etc. A basic book of Grammar is useful. I recommend Grammatik Aktive up to C1. A Tandem partner is also good for speaking practice and I would also recommend working through a course book with a teacher on a one to one basis for at least levels A1 to C1 if you can afford it. I ve used Sicher B1 and B2, Erkundigung C1 and C2 and Endstation C2. I have been to some language courses, but I am never convinced by these. The teaching is variable and they cannot address your own individual problems as well as a 1 to 1 teacher can.

Thanks for the video and tips! I am native in Russian, and currently live in the German part of Switzerland. I am somewhere at A2 level. It’s enough for some basic conversations, but definitely doesn’t give me sense of confidence in language… I’m looking for the ways to improve my high German (don’t even ask about Schweizerdeutsch 🙈). My biggest struggle is to find time and stick to discipline in learning, as I have so many other challenges in life now. Will try Babbel, and videos. Reading helps a lot too. My closest neighbor is German, but i tend to switch to English when talk to her, because I can’t stand my slooooowness in speaking German. 🤪

I want to apply for Aubildung next year and it says I needd B1. I saw in another video where there were certain things you said not to worry about (tense and articles) Could you please point me in the right direction on what grammar I should focus on as a complete beginner. It's hard to know where to even begin. Some say learn all the grammar some say only immersion 😅 Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
@neilfazackerley77582 ай бұрын
You must always worry about tenses and articles. Whoever told you this is talking rubbish. Without knowing the correct article you will have a lot of problems later in German. I would say always know the article of a noun.

Bro the last part "I did as swedes do, if you don't like germany or german food ect don't come here" that's what the "racist" are saying! You think Pakistani people give 2 fucks about Germany? You give them cheap apartments and free money. That's why they are there. Thier religion and culture is anti your culture. Go live in Iran and tell me those people have the same values.
@Shepherdservices3175 ай бұрын
So it's racist to want to rent to your fellow German over a migrant who has completely different culture? Including language, hygiene, cleaning habits ect? That's not racism bro. That's being practical. And I love that your looking down on labor Jobs " hahaha ya maybe you should be worried" . And yes the wealthy want migrants to depress wages. The more poor working folk that come the less bargaining power workers have. Also ya there aren't alot of freed up housing. Your making housing prices higher. Crime rates are higher. They don't come from a culture that is anything like yours.

I moved to Germany 2 years ago with zero knowlege of German. I would not say that it was essential to know it. It is still managable with knowing only English. But in order to properly integrate you absolutely have to know German. It becomes way way easier when you know it at least to B1 level. Also I noticed that you cannot learn it automatically just by living in Germany. I need to put a lot of work into it, there is really no easy way it seems.

I once lived a time abroad, and I strictly followed two rules. 1. I never said something negative about the country I lived in front of natives, 2. I did not stay very long but I learned the basics of the national language. That's all what I expect from an immigrant.

Great Video. good points. One thing to consider is that europeans have colonised the world and never really tried to fit in very well, just transplanted their culture. So you can expect that the immigrants coming to Germany will bring their own culture and language. And this is sad for Germany because it was not a major colonial power. As a Bosnian I will also move to Germany if I ever run out of money, like half my family already has. Unlike my family I would milk the place and come back to my country because I dont hold out hope that I could ever be considered a German and fully fit in. And how can you ever fit into any European country? It would take 5 generations to properly be accepted as an ethnic German. If you're white. + you need to be called Herman or Gunter. And I would never do that to my kids. Maybe it would be easier to assimilate into a more similar culture. Like a Swede could become an ethnic German in 2 generations and a Bosnian could become an ethnic Slovenian in 2 generations. But it would take a Bosnian 5 generations to become an ethnic German. And a Nigerian would need like 15 generations to become an ethnic German. So good luck to anyone non-european migrating to europe. You will need it.

I get the impression that you are quick to cling to stereotypes which is ironic because you are criticising other people for having stereotypes. Also, I'm sorry, but you seem to be quite depressed and unhappy with something in your life which leads to some very harsh judgements on society or other people.
