Very good demo! Did you purchase the “tube” that connected to the motor used in your buffing system? It seemed really slick and convenient.

Very creative and informative. Combining the router with the lathe created another depth to the work you did. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.

You have explained the Rotary Vein Pump (Drehschieberpumpe) in a wrong way! The Rotation is clockwise. At the right side is the suction side: vacuum connector! Der Rotor rotiert nach rechts , dort ist auch die Ansaugseite!! Best wishes!

Watched this video today (09/16/23), is the creator monitoring/answering questions (one of the questions suggested otherwise, that this person retired?)

Looks like it. The one part he missed was how to seal the vacuum pipe into the hole in wooden base, whilst allowing it to remain stationary, i.e. not rotating when the chuck revolves. However I found an easy way on another video, which used a small ball race epoxied into the wooden base, with the pipe epoxied into inner bearing 😊

Looks like you were cutting above center while cutting the grooves? You drew a center line to match the center of the lathe and then move over 1” on both sides of center to cut both grooves? Is this correct? A beautiful bowl and excellent video. Thanks

May I request (respectfully) that you change the title of this video? It is marketed as being about vacuum chucking but this is not discussed until 13-1/2 mins in (35%). It is actually a video on mounting pieces to finish the bottoms. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing your finishing tips. I haven't tried Seal-A-Cell but I use homemade danish oil or sometimes Watco. I have better luck wet sanding using thinned danish oil, especially on open grain woods. The slurry helps fill the pores and makes for a smoother finish. It also takes care of raised grain. After about three coats, I use 0000 steel wool and apply a few more thin coats. Just before the final coat, I use the white Scotch Brite pads. Depending on the shine you want, fewer coats make for a more matte finish but you can put on 5-8 thin coats for a more glossy look. I've also found it best to let the finish get close to a full cure before buffing which can take 3-4 weeks for typical danish oil. No doubt many woodworkers and turners can make nice pieces but the end result of the finish separates the best from the rest. It's mostly about patience and attention to detail. If people only knew how much time a great finish takes. Penetrating oils just can't be beaten for bringing out the full beauty of the wood. Thanks again for sharing and letting me give you some details on how I approach it. Happy turning!

At 22:45, is there any reason you aren't cutting a groove in the far side of the platter at the same time? That would eliminate half of the indexing.

In situations where there is not a centre mark to reference, I use a spindle adapter (sold by Oneway) on my Oneway live centre so I can mount my chucked workpiece on the tailstock and bring it up to the vacuum chuck. Once the vacuum is established I can release the workpiece from the chuck and remove the tailstock.
