Very interesting. I had not heard about this. Thank you for bringing historians' context to the event and also for tying its occurrence to the increase in violent weather. Seismic events have also destroyed many significant historic structures. It is a wonder to me that any of these magnificent works of architecture are even still standing.

A group of people in extreme poverty clawed together $5000 in 2024 value, to send to a people 4000 miles away, they had never seen, simply because they understood that people were even worse off.

This Irish never forgot this sentiment either. To this day they still talk about and applaud the generosity of the Choctaw

Watching from the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. My parents families came to the United States during the famine. While first traveling to Ireland in the late 1970’s I noticed a fair amount of anti-Apartheid graffiti throughout the country. The Irish considered themselves kindred spirits to South African blacks because of thru awful treatment at the hands of the English. The Choctaw are of the same line in that they felt a similar connection to the Irish people during their darkest days. It further speaks to the kindness and generosity of the Choctaw nation that they were able to be so generous when they were also suffering at the hands of the US Government.

I've actually been travelling in ireland while this video was posted. It's still very actively talked to and mentioned how much the generosity mattered. Even more so considering that they gathered millions to return the favor during covid. The Irish understand how it is to have nothing, and to be pushed to the brink by an outside power.

It’s almost as if there are way more medals to earn in swimming than other Olympic sports. Also don’t forget that swimming can be easier for double jointed people. They were literally born to be better swimmers than you.

This war had quite some impact on modern china, namely Hongkong, which has problems with the CCP even today, but other then that, this war was considered was considered to be the start of what many in china (+the CCP) calls the century of humiliation, which ended at around the 40'. The real date of ending is debatable, some say 1945 when the second sino japanese war ended, some say 1949 when the PRC became a thing and abolished all "unequal treaties" signed during the period, but what happened is that China went through alot of crap through that time. Would all that have not happened without the first opium war? Doubt it, the Qing was just weak as hell at the time, it would happen sooner or later. Oh and this war is probably the reason the CCP takes a very hardline position on drugs, and is actively involved in a war against any and all drugs.
