i was at this show, which was magical in so many ways, including this interlude, but the most amazing thing is that this was also the night the dead initiated - in collaboration with a scientist - an esp experiment. it was february, 1971, so i'm willing to bet a good 20% of the audience was tripping (including me) and i for one didn't take the experiement seriously until i read about it in rock scully's book 25 years later....

Perks of being older seeing the dead when Pigpen was alive. What I remember from the concert was too large gongs and that massive piano Pigpen played.

Ive never been to the Berkeley Community Theatre. Never even seen a photo til now. But i had the most vivid dream of being there for a movie screening that turned into a concert. Donna was helping to sing NFA and we were all dancing around in circles.

The stretch from 8:33 - 10:33 is everything I love about the early Grateful Dead. Jerry playing loose and easy, Phil dropping bombs effortlessly, Bob carefully adding the perfect compliments, and bill giving the whole crazy mess some legs to stand on. The cowboy/bluesy feeling this song has is wonderful. Like you are flying a spaceship through the Wild West with so much to think and feel. Simply wonderful, and like nothing I’ve ever heard.

This was played only once, came about only once as far as live performances go and is one of the most “beautiful jams” ever played organically by any band and never repeated is absolutely remarkable. Only the good ole Grateful Dead could ever pull off this incredible masterpiece and know to never try to replicate it. The magic of the Grateful Dead that only Deadheads will ever truely appreciate.

yea that's what really gets me about this jam. It seems to come out of nowhere and lights up the sky. They're going back into Dark Star and then all of a sudden ... divine intervention.
@Gabagool_king4 ай бұрын
So the set list goes Dark Star>Wharf Rat>Dark Star so where exactly is the beautiful jam? Is it in between Wharf Rat & the second dark Star?

I have a bootleg album with this song on it + I bought it in London on my class trip in 1972 after I got divorced to go back to school to get my diploma for my dad ! My other sisters got pregnant so had to quit ! I stayed married for 5 years but they let me back into school , with my new classmates standing behind me all the way ! 💙🐰🐇🪽🌹☠️💀⚡️🥲😘🥰😍💦💧👻👽🪐🛸🚀☮️😊

There are certain jams/solos etc from this band that give me chills…it’s when it all comes together…just the right reverb…people disregard the Dead because they don’t “get it” or think you have to be a stoner to listen…greatest American rock band of the last half of 20th century
@scottschaft15383 ай бұрын
Greatest ever. Not just American. Not just for the times. And it's not even close. No one could do what they did.
