Jerry's greatness is usually what people refer to when talking about the Dead so the greatness of the other members is usually never mentioned. There is no better rhythm guitarist than Bob Weir nor would the Dead have that Dead "sound" without the brilliant playing of Phil Lesh on bass. Phenomenal musicians all.

Agreed .Bobby and Lesh were / are awesome . Listen to Phil playing the Bass on many songs . The ability as musicians is very underrated . You will never see a talented combo that can play LIVE ever again .They complimented each other and played long jambs ... Unfortunately there are just no groups that can duplicate the Deads sound . Attempts to duplicate it ,but never ever come close to the music

i went to a party in 1976 and this song was playing everybody was drinking and jumping around like fools to this song after maybe 5 minutes i became one of those fools and you know it still gets you jumping around like a fool no wonder they have such a following

The Dead in 71-72--pure rock and roll-- a bar band like no other. I saw them 32 times between 1970 and 1975. Absolutely the best.

I wuz there! It pissed down with rain for two and a half days until the Dead took the stage, when I swear a single sunbeam lit up Jerry's guitar...they must've played 7 or 8 hours that day. Such a shame there doesn't seem to be any film footage of what was an amazing event, with one of the finest line-ups of any festival period. Grateful memories...RIP Pigpen and Jerry.

Amazing to think this is nearly 40 years ago. I was in my last year at school with A-levels only a few weeks away, and went to Bickershaw with a friend. Fond memories of Dr John, Donovan,The Kinks, Captain Beefheart and of course The Grateful Dead - particularly "Sugaree" and "Casey Jones". Not so fond memories of the rain, though.

They almost couldn’t get the generator fired up. Everyone was soaking wet & muddy. Worth every minute of it I was 16

@Dr. Bas Ackwards - i dunno, seems Donna added a needed feminine dimension to the band. As for her singing, if you realize, compared to the really good rock singers, none of the G.D. were great singers, well, Bobby could do fairly well and Jerry was so-so, she fit right in. Watching her on something passed around in a water jug, she looked like a beautiful Earth Angel, her long hair swaying with the rhythm sending waves of music over all. Well that's my take and I'm sticking to it. Happy New Year.

When they did play this they helped to push the bad weather which did seem gone after such persistent rain and drizzle as we had to put up with all thru till and since the moment I started hitch-hiking from Bath up to the festival.But the sheer intensity of expectation to see the Dead again after their two performances in Wembley drove me and kept me as alive as still feel still remembering those magical moments to this day if I had not even any plastic to cover me but my poncho...

Started at about 15 year old . At the time you almost had to be " underground " or could find a FM " radical " station that did not play top 40 hits over and over again . But the Dead really never gave a crap about singles . And the FM wavelengths did not always get reception . When a local DJ started to play " alternate rock and roll from obscure bands , The Dead , Yes , even the Who . And the Who were blasted for trashing their instruments . Suddenly , the ' underground , and " radical " FM radio began to happen . However still frowned upon . A new era of great innovative , talented musicians evolved .The Beatles ,Stones were selling records like crazy .And a whole lot of innovative ,talented musicians started their own sound .Groups like the Doors ,the Who , Clapton, Yes on the British side started to emerge with their own sound to distinguish them from other bands . It was a fabulous time . The music that came out and the Vietnam War , where we could get a plethora of new sounds .( Honestly kept me alive ) really changed the whole music scene ! Especially out on patrol during the monsoon season ..we'd blast the enemy with the new music that they really never heard ( neither did I ) It confused them .Really though they were often confused .We did take many POWs to spare them . That coupled with the 1968 political unrest and the Woodstock event of Peace in 69 ushered in a many new and talented musicians . Often in being dug in the music offered some hope , and really was an incentive to get back home and what's the point of killing these folks who I had no quarrel with . But blasting that music really spooked the VC .And sparred their lives . And cleansed my soul of NOT taking the life of another human being .But returning home we did not get at all a welcome .Understandable .Yes . I could see why it was so . But the music ,honestly , was instrumental in saving many lives , both friends and foe .

I feel that '69-'79 were the band's prime years, but they were very still good through the 80's with the occasional great show. I can't listen to any 90's shows with the exception of the ones with Branford Marsalis; Garcia simply sank too far down at that point despite some heroic efforts on Bruce Hornsby's part to support.

Ya, and they commented on that sunbeam too, iirc. It was just before sunset. We were able to watch from onstage, thanks to a friend. One guy there was taking alot of pictures and i still haven't see them - or the ones where i'm in the frame. I dunno what up with these photogs, The '70 bath festival - with all that great music - was filmed with large video rigs. I heard it was deliberately destroyed because of disputes between the producers! Some of the greatest zep video was lost forever!

Agreed, he had far more style and flair than Hart, who was basically a dull, monotonous pounder during the song portions of the sets. However, Mickey was an inspired experimental percussionist and essentially owned the Rhythm Devils section creatively. Ideally, Bill should have been the sole ensemble drummer and Mickey could have been given a large segment in the second set to perform a truly cosmic electronic musucal extravaganza. Frankly, Bill's drumming in the early to mid 70s was as sophisticated as anyone in jazz.

He's quick and isn't worried at all about "keeping the beat". He had that covered yet, like Spencer Dryden of the Jefferson Airplane, he was leading the band into and through their tempo changes.

She was beautiful with harmony vocals, but those banshee wails can nearly ruin a listening experience. While Jerry was a great guitarist, the rest of the band was just as good in their roles in the band.Bob is an excellent rhythm and lead guitarist.Phil’s bas playing is really good.Billie and Mickey are also great on the drums.

I love & prefer the Brent versions of G.D.T.R.F.B's from 3-31-88 [Brendan Byrne out of space] , Alpine Valley '89, Oakland 12-31-89, Carson 5-5-90, usually followed by high energy Dear Mr. Fantasy's > Hey Jude or Not Fade Aways. Not a huge fan of Donna's wailing away. Maybe it's because that's the sound that hooked me. With other tunes it's different but G.D.T.R.F.B, was much better in the late Brent era. Jerry's picking & matured vocals fit the tune like a dream. Not to mention HAMMOND B3 & Leslie Speaker Cabinet whirling away. They were the ultimate team.

Not the best, but not the worst performance. But I wish Not Fade Away had sounded better & lasted longer & I feel like they hurried through it & extended the ending. Not so great.
