When handgun silhouette was a thing in Canada, I used 30-30 WCF in a 10" Contender for a while. I found that a 150-grain Speer Magtip worked very well, knocking the Rams down.

@@markcarew6724 I have both 10” and 14” 30-30 barrels. I’ve run some rounds through the short one. I can see where simplicity with the brass could be a good thing. That’s what’s cool about 7mm International Rimmed - it’s has appropriate case volume with way less case forming time needed. With today’s component limitations and cost, 300 Whisper / 300 Blackout is in the sweet spot - commercial cases, plentiful .30 caliber bullets, and available small rifle primers.
@markcarew6724Күн бұрын
I used the 7mm BR and 30-30 WCF for the same reason you are using the 300 Whisper. I used the 30 and 357 Herrett for several years but ultimately stopped due to the case forming chores. I will never be able to use all the components I have in store within my remaining lifetime.

18 to 20 gr of CFE blk does well for me with multiple bullet weights in the 300 . I think the powder case fill helps ?
@WilliamCChapin3 күн бұрын
It seems like case fill is a more significant detail than the powder charge size itself.
@jamespollard16703 күн бұрын
@@WilliamCChapin For the most part , yes. I rarely work up loads anymore . I start 1 gr and 1/2 gr below max with a powder with good case fill . My hunting bullet loads are normally .6 and target bullet loads are .4 to .5 with this method . With cast bullet loads I settle for 1 moa as it's hard to get any good case fill with those . Some of those 1 1/2 moa are a struggle . Low case fill = higher ES most of the time
@WilliamCChapin3 күн бұрын
@@jamespollard1670 I should have specified that I was referring to CFE BLK specifically. I shoot other powders that are not at all fussy about case fill. CFE BLK is by far the most goofy, misbehaving powder that I have used. 🤪
@jamespollard16703 күн бұрын
@@WilliamCChapin yes , it does misbehave with partial case fills I've noticed . Just like h110 can at times . But for cartridges like my 243 and others I can get ES's in the single digits with a good case fill even with a ball powder. I believe powder choice and case fill makes load development much easier if you want accuracy and good es .

I remember friends back in the 80's that used this Creedmoor Shooting Position to shoot silhouettes, they always wore the same pants because the lower leg near the muzzle can get ripped up pretty bad from the muzzle blast.
