The town was ruined by "planners" in the 1960s. Many fine old Yorkshire stone buildings flattened & replaced by hideous brutalist concrete eyesores. A crime. It wouldn't be allowed today.

Imagine bringing this back with Lineker as host... No hold that thought Lineker wouldn't be seen dead in a pub or WMs club.

I recognise the schools; it’s a little bit of Barnsley where Athersley South, Smithies, New Lodge and (just about) Athersley North all come together. When I was a lad there were four school there, all together: Richard Newman Infant School, Athersley South Junior, St Hilda’s - a girls school - and St Edwins - a boys school. One entrance was at the junction of Wakefield and Rotherham Road, another way in was from the top of Laithes Lane and another was via Ashbourne Road.

“One of the finest bus services in the country,” maybe. But a crap 💩 bus station. The drivers used to have to reverse out of the station.

Fred’s enthusiasm and genuine admiration for the players was great to watch. Smoking a pipe and drinking beer whilst presenting was of it’s time but I have no problem with it, this was brilliant television.

Marvellous stuff. Great to see real sports and true athletes! Last time I played bar billiards was in 1990 in The Swordsman in Stamford Bridge near York. I also remember playing in the Cross Keys in Goodramgate, York in the late 1980s. I don't suppose there will be many tables left in pubs anywhere now.

From 37 seconds to 1 minute 09 it's the playground of Athersley Junior Mixed School (Athersley South) and a little bit of the access road that led up between St Hilda's girls school and St Edwin's boys' school up towards the Richard Newman Infants' School and the gate from the school grounds on to Laithes Lane whene my granddad, Tommy Bennett (a retired miner) was the first Barnsley 'lollipop man.'

That board is rubbish! Needs some French chalk or arrowroot on it - liberally. Even cornflour or custard powder would do at a push. You'd think they'd have a decent slate board for tv. Loved this series as a kid, and it reinforced my love of pub games.
@johnpenny96565 жыл бұрын
Bar billiards is such a great game. So many pubs have removed it as they want to make space for drinkers.
