Has become my favorite version of this song. Great vocal in a lovely arrangement. Tears to the eyes!

Ok...I'll admit my introduction to this song was Mary Chapin Carpenter's from the film Fly Away Home way back when I was a kid...then I did some digging and found out that it's history is that of a traditional English/Celtic ballad, so to hear it in it's more traditional form is just lovely and so much nostalgia from both a childhood film memory and a love of Celtic folk music even though I hadn't heard it this way yet is a wallop today 🥰

We saw you live in Maryland, USA. You were amazing - the band, the sound & style. I cried to this song - you sang it so beautifully. Love your rendition of it. Ah, and the flute.. made me feel like I was that bird.

As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I There armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by No pipe did hum no battle drum did sound its loud tattoo But the Angelus Bell o'er the Liffey's swell rang out through the foggy dew Right proudly high over Dublin Town they hung out the flag of war 'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud-El-Bar And from the plains of Royal Meath strong men came hurrying through While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew 'Twas Britannia bade our wild geese go, that small nations might be free For their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves or the fringe of the great North Sea Oh, had they died by Pearse's side or fought with Cathal Brugha Their graves we would keep where the Fenians sleep, 'neath the shroud of the foggy dew Oh the bravest fell, and the Requiem bell rang mournfully and clear For those who died that Eastertide in the spring time of the year And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew As back through the glen I rode again, my heart with grief was sore For I parted then with those valiant men whom I'll never shall see more But to and fro in my dreams I go and I kneel and pray for you Oh slavery fled, Oh glorious dead, when you fell in the foggy dew

I;ve been a fan since meeting the band in 1999 in Gaithersburg, Md. They never disappoint and are as down to earth and approachable as they seem in the vid. The Hell with the Chieftains, Danu is THE premier Trad group
