What a pretty daughter... This is a nice feature of this movie... "Good" came out of an odd couple...

Rogers and Hammerstein always said that Carousel was their most rewarding and best work. I remember watching a documentary where a director said he told Richard Rogers that 'you brought a piece of heaven to the earth'. Indeed they did....and nothing could be more defining of that than this very scene. It is beyond heart wrenching, Gordon MacRae's voice beautiful beyond belief, and the music, lyrics and orchestration are simply transcendent. I saw this musical for the first time as a child and was tremendously moved, and have been every time I've seen it since. Nothing else comes close.

I’m going to something called solo-fest and you sing a song for a judge and get a rating. This is my solo and it is so beautiful to sing. And the end I go up to a high G and I love it! It’s so pretty and my teacher thinks the song is a perfect fit for my voice.

This is a Masterpiece of all time! IT's a pity to know that all those actors/singers and actress/singers in the actuallity all them are dead, they are not in this Earth and they left to us a wonderful and beautiful musical film like this jewel called Carousel 1956... it puts tears in all the people that have seen this outstanding wonderful Masterpiece... Gordon MacRae was very amazingly handsome, and Shirley Jones was the woman most beautiful over the Earth as well and all the rest of characters were impressing in all sense! To say to all them God be with them and thankful for this beautiful legacy of film Carousel... Rest in Peace all of you... and the end of Carousel brings me to tears Once more 😭

Apart from this song there was nothing good in this movie . He was sick bastard who hit his wife, his little daughter , committed felonies and then died. Good riddance in my opinion.

I am so very sorry that this song means a lot to you, for such an awful reason (it means a lot to me, for a bad reason: but so very much less from yours, so I won’t do the self-pity sh*te), so… there’s little I CAN do, but send Big, very BIG ‘Ug from me to you

The Carousel is an adoptation of a hungarian play "Lily" by Ferenc Molnár, written in 1909. The original play takes place in Budapest, but it was so popular, that was introduced in New York and London. It was then, when Oscar Hammerstein noticed it, who received the rights for the musical adoptation from Ferenc Molnár....

Molnár helped Rogers and Hammerstein to adapt Liliom into Carousel too. And he loved the end result.

One of just two films made in the CinemaScope 55 format. This used a 8 perf negative format on 55.625 mm film stock. This gave a frame size about twice the linear size, four times the area, of standard 35 mm CinemaScope. The frame size was even about 1.4 times the area of a 65 mm Todd-AO negative. Release prints were on standard 35 mm CinemaScope. There was a proposed wide film print format with the frame size reduced to about 75% of the negative , with a 6 perf pulldown and the width thus made available used for stereo magnetic sound tracks. This format was never used. I don’t know if the original 55.625 mm negatives still exist, and whether they could be scanned, but If they could it would be interesting to see what a good 4K DCP made from them would look like; I’ve only ever seen the film as a dirty and scratched 35 mm print with mono optical sound. The other CinemaScope 55 film by the way was The King and I.

This is my favourite parts of the movie. I'd love to hear the Sinatra version - Sinatra was originally cast as Billy Bigelow and the whole soundtrack was recorded first so the actors could lip-sync to it. But Sinatra quit soon after filming began and was replaced by Gordon Macrae, who had to re-record Billy's singing. The Sinatra version has never been released as far as I know, but it must exist somewhere.

The only thing I didn’t like about this scene was when she was saying it’s possible for someone to hit you hard and it not hurt… you know that was written by a man, wanting women to feel like if their husbands hit them, it was supposed to feel like a kiss. Give me a break 😂
