Rogers and Hammerstein always said that Carousel was their most rewarding and best work. I remember watching a documentary where a director said he told Richard Rogers that 'you brought a piece of heaven to the earth'. Indeed they did....and nothing could be more defining of that than this very scene. It is beyond heart wrenching, Gordon MacRae's voice beautiful beyond belief, and the music, lyrics and orchestration are simply transcendent. I saw this musical for the first time as a child and was tremendously moved, and have been every time I've seen it since. Nothing else comes close.

Love the way he sings it here. It's more personal than his usual belting it out. I hate watching this movie because I always cry at this point.

Watched this when I was a kid never saw the sad side, now as an adult I see the sadness and feel the atmosphere of this scene. Beautiful song the instrumental background and vocals. It is a way of showing a sign of relief over grief when a loved one leaves us, the look in Julie’s face is amazing, she’s finally moving on but always remembering.

Unfortunately, this magnificent work (one that Richard Rogers himself said was his favorite of all) is much maligned because of the not-so subtle alluding to domestic abuse. It is a shame that folks can't understand that art must be viewed in the context of its times. And yes, we certainly have come along way in the 60 plus years since this music was born, but we should be able to appreciate the beauty of the work and not condemn it for the time period in which it was created. The brouhaha stems from the beginning of this scene (truncated here) where Billy tried to give his daughter the star, but she won't take, it so he slaps her hand. She calls Julie and asked, "Is it possible, mother, for someone to hit you, hit you hard and it not hurt at all?" and Julie, gazing lovingly at the star, presumably remembering Billy and hopefully not him smacking her around, answers, "Yes, dear, it is possible for someone to hit you...hit you hard, and it not hurt at all." And earlier, Billy admits that he hit Julie when he tells the Gate Keeper, "We'd argue; she's be right, so I hit her." In 1956, this probably was supposed to come off as humorous. Boom -- you can hear the heads exploding today. Be that as it may, it does not (should not) take away the beauty of this music and these incredible performances.

I NEED a link to a clip of this scene where she's asking her mom about getting hit. It's so fucked up and weird. I have to save it to my list of shit vids

It's meant to be ironic, funny in that sense, but the situation was still tragic. But speaking of historical context, the original 1909 play, *Liliom,* on which *Carousel* is based, *ends* on Julie's line, "Yes, dear, it is possible for someone to hit you ... hit you hard, and it not to hurt at all." Rodgers & Hammerstein changed the ending by adding this reprise, and the following graduation scene, in which Billy expresses his love for Julie and encourages his daughter.
@Arkelk2010 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad the ending was added as it redeems Billy, sooths Julie, and turns their daughter in the right direction. Shows Billy just didn't know about behaving and showing love even though it was there.

This is my favourite parts of the movie. I'd love to hear the Sinatra version - Sinatra was originally cast as Billy Bigelow and the whole soundtrack was recorded first so the actors could lip-sync to it. But Sinatra quit soon after filming began and was replaced by Gordon Macrae, who had to re-record Billy's singing. The Sinatra version has never been released as far as I know, but it must exist somewhere.

The only thing I didn’t like about this scene was when she was saying it’s possible for someone to hit you hard and it not hurt… you know that was written by a man, wanting women to feel like if their husbands hit them, it was supposed to feel like a kiss. Give me a break 😂
