So beautiful. I reckon that is the best version I have heard. What a voice you have, dear Sir! My Father in Law used to sing this to my wife and her siblings when she was a girl. Irish to his bootstraps, Pat was thinking of his mother, Maria.

Oh dear Johnny, sitting here with tears in my eyes. My Grandma used to sing When I Grow Too Old to Dream. She lost her husband at age 44 and raised her 5 children mostly by herself but with my mom's help as the years went by. She never married again. She loved her Benny deep in her soul. I was in the hospital for 5 days and just escaped late Monday night to come home. Wasn't on the computer at all but came on and this popped up in my in box. I so needed to hear that perfect voice and see the sweet blue peepers right now. Thank you for this concert. I cherish each tune. Please stay well and again, thank you for posting this. Lovely doesn't quite cover it. GB.

Today was my first Father's Day without my Dad. I went to put flowers at his grave and played this song on my phone. He had dementia. We would stream your shows in TV and he would watch over and over. He loved this song and thought he would have gotten a kick out of it being played in a cemetery.

This is a war song, it should be sung like a march and by a basso or basso-baritone. This is too pretty, too lyrical.
@johnmcdermotttenorАй бұрын
Sez you. I did my best. Thanks for listening.☘️ Also, your version is where?
@syourke3Ай бұрын
I didn’t mean to offend you. Your version is very lovely. It’s just not the way I would sing it. I hear this song as a fighting song, a rebel war song, a national anthem rather like La Marseillaise. You sing it like it’s a lamentation over the grave of the fallen warrior. It’s very beautiful and sweet but I would take a more muscular approach. Do you see my point? It’s purely a matter of musical interpretation. It’s a very great song, and like many great songs, it can be sung convincingly in different ways. I’m a big fan of your work. I’ve enjoyed your music for many years. I sincerely regret that my comment seems to have given offense. You’re a fine artist and I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. As for my own version, I’m a classical pianist, not a professional singer, and I’ve never posted anything to KZbin. Your parting comment amounts to a challenge. Put up or shut up, so to speak. Well, perhaps I will accept your challenge and post something, just to illustrate my point. It won’t be of professional quality but perhaps it will suffice to illustrate my argument. You know the old saying - “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, criticize.” Best wishes and keep up the good work.

Dear John, I just watched your lovely Father's Day concert and it was heartfelt as always. But this year it was still more moving, maybe because your song Legacy you sang just recently, braught my father's memory so strongly back into my mind. A great Thank you, John 💝🎶🎶🎶

I cry almost every time I hear this song. It makes me think of my father's generation who stormed the Omaha and Utah beach in WWII in an incredible display of bravery, and all the generations before his, who were their role models.

You were and always will be the BEST of the Irish Tenors. Without the opera training and with a God given gift of a golden tenor that comes straight from the heart, you capture the words and give them to all who hear. You shine with your band or with an orchestra and your sense of humor is always a great addition. Thank you for posting this lush version. What a treat. GB, John.

You forgot to mention, Aysanabee, and his story was so touching... The TO story failed to note both Indigenous performers! Could it be they simply don't know them? and if not, WHY? Two remarkable singer / songwriters up and coming! Thanks though, this is awesome!

Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan are always written about being the greatest songwriters, ever. I can't dispute that because both are indeed really great songwriters. However, I think Gordon Lightfoot was one of the greatest songwriters around but he doesn't seem to be given the same status or level as Dylan and Joni Mitchell and I don't know why. He truely wrote so many, many great songs! Extremely great songs actually.
