I think you're over-conflating rustic culture as an authentic experience when you probably shouldn't be. Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang province and there's a lot more business and diversity than you would find in a prefecture level city like Hotan. Urumqi is the largest city in the Central Asian region afterall. When you consider the socio-political circumstances nearly a decade ago, and what it took to get to where they are as a society, you'd understand that a strong law enforcement environment is welcomed by the locals no matter the ethnic background. It's better safe than sorry.

Throughout Chinese history, whenever the Central Plains regime declined, the border areas were prone to split off. It is better for Xinjiang people to develop with China at present. Secession will only make the minority local ruling class richer.Look at Mongolia and Kazakhstan around Xinjiang. From 2022 to 2023, the central government's transfer payments to Xinjiang reached 1.05 trillion yuan, and the 19 provinces and cities that provided counterpart assistance to Xinjiang have invested a total of more than 39 billion yuan in budgetary assistance funds.Without China's leadership, Xinjiang would not be more developed than its neighbors.The central government has granted Xinjiang a high degree of autonomy, making it one of several autonomous regions for ethnic minorities.

If you have been stoped by 5 times in one day for ID, thats is indeed too much and annoying. probably due to it was a festival time, and the terrorist attack happened a decade ago in this region. But to be honest, if you mentioning that more than 4 times, makes people like me wonder why. But since the rest observation somehow sounds objective. That deserve a thumb up for your hard work. cheers. We are all biased to some extent, travel is one way to find it after all.

Hello, I didn't mention it several times did I? I know they were very alert while holidays Touris lt season. The day I got 5 times checked 90% of tourist left already but the "checkpoints" were still everywhere working.. and seemed pretty bored. So they took what they could get basically.. I felt always safe, but being ask 5 times in one after for ID, where I came from and plan to go was too much
@fredfred615914 күн бұрын
@@OlisBigPicture It's wired, I have an impression, there was 3 or 4 times when I watch the first time yesterday. but I just checked again today, there was only two times. Did that counting, not to be offensive, just be objective. Plus, I guess, there might be a possibility that, they have a kind of mission of how many time of "checks" they should conducted in one day during the holiday times. And you guys are too conspicuous to be the mission completed. Afterall, as a regular Chinese living in Shanghai, it's also possible to be checked two times a day, in the metro entry.

Border towns esp those with military installations are not permit-free to enter. In some border towns, even local Chinese have to apply special permit to go there. I think there was a time even Tibet was free for foreigners to enter and leave, until some westerners became meddlesome in their internal affairs and so the govt made it compulsory for foreign visitors to have to apply entry permit and to follow a local Tibetan guide. Germany and esp UK should return those looted cave wall paintings and artefacts to the rightful owner, this is really an act of shamelessness, to take things and then keep it when they don't actually belong to the country.
