Herb Elliott ran that time in 1958 on a grass track in Dublin when he was barely out of his teens! Shows how fast and good he was given this race was on a better track, better shoes etc.

Is the Fiddlers Elbow still open?😳 I used to drink in there all the time when I lived in Brighton for a few years, that's about 16 years ago now.. It was down a side street snd there was a school across from it and a Witherspoons near it as far as I can remember 🤔

Yep, still is! Easily the best Irish pub in Brighton. Cheaper than the others by far but with good character and live music most nights.

I have seen this race lots of times and heard the commentary and don't understand what the fuss was. Pickering called it right, nothing arrogant about any of it. Treacy ran a great race, and so did Ovett.

Mariano Scartezzini of Italy, who surprisingly defeated Malinowski in this race, placed 2nd (probably) in the 1981 IAAF Continental Cup in Rome, 7th in the 1982 European Track+Field Championships in Athens, and 10th in the 1983 World Track+Field Championships in Helsinki.

Ron Pickering was a top notch Sports Commentator usually - this was one of the very few times he sounded this biased. Mind you, the real clown in this race was Steve Ovett - it was his arrogance that cost him the victory.

Well that was a great day since I spent it getting married over in South Korea and yes getting married while stationed over there was an all day event since you had to go through the Korean Vital Statistic office in the morning and then the US Embassy in the afternoon. I am still married to that wonderful Korean lady today and this year would be our 44th.

the commentry was so biased against the Irishman by the English commentator shocking really , and sadly no handshake from OVETT, to his neighbour across the channel in IRELAND magnificent race by TREACY as awkward as he did look beside OVETT , as the commentator pointed out ,, bit of a sting for OVETT ,

Few wins mate Fontenella Moorcroft Delize these r world class runners & the Old man of track took them all also a young Steve Cram who only made 1980 final Moscow because of the boycott & the Athletes that weren’t there he would of given the only 3 class athletes at Moscow 1500m a go experience counts for a tremendous amount just look at Coe 800m he lost because he was inexperienced in the Olympic Games Ovett won because he went to Montreal 1976 it isn’t just a normal race it’s the Olympic Games Final the pressure is horrendous the most u will ever experience in your lifetime! In NZ JW was a legend everyone that came to race him 1975 onwards no one beat him except Scott once like 1985 Coe Ovett Cram never came out & took on the Champ on his own turf but he raced on their Turf for 20 years World Class the Greatest Career in terms of time in History
@warrencundy6 ай бұрын
He couldn’t get 4th John Walker the defending Olympic Champion or no Steve Scott no Mike Boit or any other Kenyans Thomas Wessinghage West Germany because of the Stupid Boycott it was a 2nd rate field 3 top Athletes the rest were rubbish & the aforementioned Athletes would of beaten all of those guys & pushed Coe & Ovett instead of the walk in the park Qualifying was for the top 3 just look at 1984 & u had to run 1:44 to make the 800m final

Bronislaw Malinowski (1951-1981) was an excellent Polish steeplechaser. In addition to his Olympic gold (1980) and silver (1976) medals, he twice won the European championship (1974 and 1978). Tragically, his young life was cut short in a car accident on a bridge in Grudziadz, Northern Poland, on September 27th, 1981. Malinowski was only 30 years old when he died accidentally.

This is a real classic!! What a treasure to have posted (video) this here. There were so many runners in this race of that era, especially Eamonn Christopher Coghlan of Ireland (the King of the Boards) the only man in history to break the mile under 4 minutes at 40 years old. I competed against Eamonn back in the mid 1980's in cross country (Van Cortland Park in New York). He was not keen on running much of cross country (as in track) but when he did, he performed very well. In 1983, he ran a cross country race in Belmont track in New York where he ran against Henry Rono, and he beat him. Nevertheless, this race was fascinating because by 1983 and 1984, the Europeans were not as dominant in cross country. By 1985, the Kenyans and the Ethiopians began to dominate cross country. Another thing worth mentioning, is the course of this race; this was a great and beautiful designed cross country course. This is what cross country courses should be like. Unlike today, where cross country courses are basically "flat road races". Again all my gratitude to Hanleyfender in posting this video.
