Heh, it has the same construction in terms of case and boards, interconnects as Dynisco brand. Had a Dynisco 1490 universal controller in a few weeks ago. It had the secondary cap bulging as well and for the cap next to it an SMD cap fitted. It is actually dual footprint. I replaced all 4 caps in the controller that came in on my end. I replaced both the SMD and THT one with THT ones (Matsushita 470uF 25V 105Deg, type unknown as I had them NOS), I think one was for 5V, the other around 12V. The mains caps were replaced with Rubycon 400LLE3R3MEFC10X9 (Farnell 2342106) 3.3uF 400V 105Deg. Its measurement wasn't stable anymore, after replacing the caps all good.

would this be because the different testers test at different hz?
@AIexanderHartdegen25 күн бұрын
not only of course. I made this video to attract attention on very bad inexpensive ESR/component tester, witch are not able to provide a decent value of ESR measurement. At the end of the video, I show a very nice inexpensive ESR/component tester, wich every body shoud have in his tool box. Those discrepancy are not only different frequency measurement use, but also the integrated software, badly designed, who works badly and make the device inoperant. Some inexpensive chinese component tester can be very nice (the last exception at the end of the video) and other are just waste of money. So, that's not only a concern of frequency, but the art to interpretate it.

@AIexanderHartdegen The art of knowing how to read them also matter.. (you showed a wrong reqding on the 2nd tool 😊). anyway thank you for this nice, valuable video. would you share with us some recommendations on what to buy? ❤

@@ivanm.3522 the first and second tools show bad values. If you don't want to spent a lot of money, the "exception" is perfect. The "blue esr meter" and the analog homemade ones are perfect to read capacitors values on pcb (blue is expensive). If you are ok to dismount faulty capacitor to measure it, you can purchase the last one ( "the exception") on Aliexpress. For less twenty box you will have a very nice multitool. This what I use at work :)

@AIexanderHartdegenАй бұрын

Merci bcp
@AIexanderHartdegenАй бұрын

Sir, this is not a capacitor, its a varistor designed to get short and blow the fuse if the voltage raise to a certain limit. its a protection from over voltage.
@Oldclunker-ge5zp3 ай бұрын
I agree. This is a varistor. It has done it's job a a bodyguard for the yellow X capacitor and all the electronics. You need to replace the varistor because without it, the whole device will have a short life. I don't think the colour has a big importance. By the way, Y capacitors are actually guaranteed to never cause a short circuit. X capacitors are self healing, but they will lose some of their capacity each time the hesl. I have recently replaced an X capacitor that had lost 80% of its capacity.

@Oldclunker-ge5zp3 ай бұрын
Sorry if I missed something you said. Normally, a varistor should survive a reasonable amount of overvoltage surge energy without permanent damage. There are different technologies for varistors, there are also unipolar transient suppressor diodes. All of them are expected to cause a short in the worst case. In your case, either the surge was enormous or the varistor was a just too small for its job. I have recently seen one, burst and cracked open, in a 100V mains device where 230V were accidentally applied. It is still shorted and blew the 3 Amp fuse. Job done heroically. I will Just replace the blown parts for 1€ cost. It's a bit sad though that nowadays so many components have become short-lived consumable items. X capacitors have always been notorious for causing trouble, ever since they changed from the huge but virtually indestructible metal/paper aka MP capacitors to the smaller and cheaper plastic film capacitors like MKP MKT. A varistor is much more necessary for protection of MK* capacitors than for the classic MP.
