I found your channel back when these vids were originally posted. I was looking for an X100V but couldn’t bring myself to overpay due to the limited availability. Since then, I decided to get a Leica Q2 & was looking at the Wotancraft Pilot. So naturally, KZbin re-recommended these vids to me. I am so bummed that you didn’t make more vids, I loved your perspective & comedic approach. I would have loved to see you doing street photography, in a vid but it’s looks like maybe you went a different direction & decided not to continue on KZbin. I hope you’re still doing the photography thing (sorry, I have no socials outside of KZbin).

I'm with you on the Q2. I've had the "Reporter" version for about 7 months and love it. I also have a M10-p, but a tremor makes it harder for me to use. So the Q2 is great. However, a fellow photographer and I went to a museum show opening the other day. He had an old 35mm film Olympus pocket camera and captured many more photos than I did. So I bought a GR IIIx for situations like that and on the street. I haven't used it much, but see it as complementary to the Q2. Thanks for your insightful review.

Hey Nic nice review subbed cheers. I bought the Q2, initial thoughts were I was surprised at how much noise at 3200 and above, but in general the images from that camera are impressive. I killed the camera after just 14 days, it's now off to Wetzler for a new sensor so as it's a 4 month turnaround I bought a used damaged Q rear LCD dead, rest of camera is good. Loving it so far.
@NicJohnson2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the sub. Compared to a lot of other modern cameras at even half the budget, the Q2 leaves a lot to be desired in terms of high ISO performance. But I do agree, the overall IQ certainly makes up for it. I actually really enjoy the photos out of the OG Q, so I'm sure you'll be very happy with it until you get your Q2 back. Thanks again and happy shooting.

I love my Q2 Reporter, it does for me what it does for you. But I was in a museum with a photo buddy and he was using a tiny Olympus 35 mm film camera and getting way more pics than I. So I just bought a Ricoh GR IIIx for those tight quarters situations. I hoping the two will complement each other. One can put the GR IIIx in a pocket. The Q2 is inconspicuous on the street, but there are other situations where I think the GR could be better. Thanks for your review of the Q2. It was insightful and thoughtful.

Thank you so much for your comment. The Q2 is such a wonderful camera and the Reporter is absolutely gorgeous. There's certainly merit in the compact nature of the GR series of cameras. Thanks for the helpful video. I have two question s🙋🏻♂️ about the camera sittings for the Q2. I am trying a combination for street photography. It is aperture priority with an limited Auto ISO that has minimum shutter speed of 1/250. My questions are : 1- If I put my shutter speed dial on Auto with the combination I mentioned above , the shutter speed keeps going slower than the minimum shutter speed I set with the Auto ISO . Do you have a solution for that ? I mean I want Auto shutter speed and Auto ISO but it is not working with me. 2- What is the best exposure preview for such combination? I mean I cannot have a real time exposure preview with that combination. I read the manual and it is not working. In many cases I under exposed my pictures because of that . It is so frustrating . It would be great if you could help me . Thanks 🙏

I looked at a Leica Q2 today at a dealer, and it felt lower budget in the hand than I expected. I’m surprised that people don’t mention the lower quality feel compared to Leica M or SL cameras. Surprisingly, the CL had a higher quality feel to it. RIP CL. 😢 Maybe Leica wanted to make sure the Q2 wasn’t too heavy to satisfy more buyers. Weight wise, it was pretty close to the Contax S2 I had on me at the time of my visit.
@NicJohnson2 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting take. I've actually owned both the digital CL and the M10-P. I can agree that the CL is certainly well made. But I don't feel there is a noticeable quality difference between any of the cameras you mentioned and the Q2. I'd even go as far as to say the Q2 felt more confidence inspiring in terms of build over the CL and M10. Mostly because of the weather sealing and sturdiness that comes from a fixed lens camera. I only have a passing familiarity with the SL cameras. Speaking specifically on the SL2-S. And it felt as if it were carved from the same block of stone as the Q2 was. IE, no discernable quality differences. I don't feel I'm alone in feeling this way either. That's most likely why you haven't heard others speak onto a disparaging quality difference between the Q2 and the rest of the Leica line. Maybe you had failing expectations or a preconceived notion that the Q2 was of some unobtainable quality standard. And that could be why you were so dissatisfied with the Q2? Regardless, thanks for the comment and for checking out my video. It's all very much appreciated.

Hey Bill, thanks for the comment. I tried staying away from the topics that are more covered online such as image quality and focused more on the subjective aspects that are specific to me. Thanks for the review! Been looking into Q2 for some time now.. However, x100v which you mentioned as a variant, is on my radar too)). But your words that x100v is only "well over fourth of the camera" (Q2) at 13.12 kinda took me aback.. Really? Just like.. 40 or 50 % of Q2.. and GR III is "85%" ? I am very interested in x100v.. budgetwise)) I am just curious and not judging in any way) So how do you calculate here? Thanks again!
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Boris, thanks for the comment. I'll be honest, my calculations are completely arbitrary. The X100V is a wonderful camera and can easily take the place of the Q2 for most photographers. Just not for me. My gripes with the X100 are few. Actually, I only have two. The lens and the viewfinder. The first isn't necessarily an issue with the lens of the X100V. It's actually a very sharp and pleasing lens. I'm not a fan of the 23mm focal length as a 35mm equivalent. You never get the subject separation or bokeh I'd want from a 35 because of the of compression a 23mm has. Or lack thereof. The APS-C crop factor and subsequent lack of compression is a benefit for the GR and it's 18mm lens because of the type of photos I feel most will be taking with that style of camera. Street photography and quick snap shots. Which then the lack of compression is a benefit because at the same focal length the GR/18mm will have a greater depth of field than a ff 2mm. My second issue lies with the hybrid viewfinder. I can't shake feel it's very gimmicky. in use the viewfinder often makes the camera feel cumbersome and unnecessarily complicated. When brining the camera to my eye I'd often have to wait a split second for the sensor to register the camera was to my eye and bring the EVF forward. I preferred using the EVF to an OVF in most situations. Maybe if the OVF was your preference this wouldn't be an issue either. And that's exactly it. The issues are very specific to me though and my very specific preferences. If the focal length making for a poor facsimile of a normal lens and the viewfinder sometimes getting in the way aren't issues for you, then the X100V might be the camera. It offers value that few cameras do. And frankly, the Q2 doesn't beat out either the GR or the X100V in terms of value. The cost of the Q2 is something that still bothers me, even after a year of ownership. I wish I could have been happy with an X100V, but it's just not the camera for me. But it very well could be a great camera for you. Hopefully my comment helps you decide whether the X100V is the camera for you or not.

@@NicJohnson Hey Nic! Thank you for such a thorough response. Those are valid points of view and now understand the motives that led you to not to stick with x100v. Here is the thing about "expensive" Leica cameras - arguably, the cost of ownership is the lowest of any camera. I bought a Leica M8 in 2017 and used it for four years. In 2017 it cost me $1079 USD from a dealer (KEH). Go ahead and check if you don't believe me, but the camera is now worth more than I paid four years ago. I got paid to use a Leica. There is no other digital camera where this happens.

@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. I very much agree with you. 28 vs 35mm doesn't seem like a massive, but in actual use 28mm is much better suited for streetphotography. 35mm overall feels very middling for me. Interestingly enough, I actually have a fair bit of experience with the CL and the 18mm. I got to use both the CL and the 18mm for a while before eventually getting the Q2. The TLDR on the CL is that it's a great camera and I love the size of the body and the 18mm. With that being said, the Q2 is a league above the CL, and especially the 18mm lens. If you love 28mm as much as me, I'm sure you'll love the Q2. I'm just not sure if it's the right choice for everyone solely due to how prohibitively expensive the Q2 is. If you can somehow manage the budget, I'd go with the Q2. If you don't feel comfortable spending so much on the Q2, the CL+18mm will make for a really pleasant shooting experience with only very slight compromises.

Used the GRIII for 3weeks. The relatively high price is the GRIII’s No1 enemy that makes its flaws inexcusable. Its not a cheap pocket camera in many countries. Its high price is cleverly achieved by it being overly-hyped up by Western media as a “street camera” and given a self-created cult following. Classic American marketing. If it was a REAL street photography camera, it surely would have these mandatory things on such a “street camera”: 1. Big and bright EVF with excellent focus peaking. But as usual, most mftrs are clever in not giving such competently useful EVFs unless you buy the higher-priced models. Ricoh is bullshitting you here. Where’s the EVF? 2. Fast and accurate manual focusing. How is this possible when the LCD screen is almost blanked out by bright outdoor lighting? Back to square 1….same issue as your smartphones. 3. Zone focusing scale. Do you see one? 4. Ruggedly built. While its price is rugged, with a magnesium body, its dial feels flimsy while that silly ring around the lens (which always comes loose) make the product look like a cheap product. In reality, the majority of GRIII photos that you have seen, can easily be replicated with any flagship smartphones with simple editing, (which I have been doing since iPhone 4 until now. And I also use an XT2 with Voight 40mm 1.2). Its certainly fun and exciting to participate in such a cult following thats created and “excited-tized” by American social media if you can just close your eye and buy one GRIII, while having loads of other cameras. But if you have to ponder, analyse and rethink many times before deciding, then pls look at my comments above and re-think. Do you need to spend so much on a hyped-up product while your own smartphone (if cleverly exploited) can give similar results? And dont forget…your smartphone can be used in the rain😂😂😂…Do you dare to use the GR3 in the rain when merely DUST ingress into sensor is already an issue for many users? The more you analyse without emotions and biasness, the more you’ll see that the GRIII is a highly “exciting-fied” piece of cheap stuff for amateurs wanting to appear hip and professional. No thanks. At the moment, I’ll stick to my XT2 + Voight, while continuing to use my iP12ProMax for all casual shooting.
