Great video, I just picked up a Q2 a couple months ago. I too sold a few of my canon cameras (including a 5Dmk4) to get one lightly used. I held onto my EOS R and lenses for wedding photography versatility but I plan on using this as my primary camera (weddings and all). Loving it so far, and I feel like making sacrifices to have a Leica makes it all the more special to shoot with and enjoy. Look forward to more of your content, I like your style! Cheers.

Started using the Q2 last week. It's not about the specs or comparisons or price, it's about how YOU value the camera and how it makes you feel. Just having it makes me want to shoot more often, because it's so fun to handle. Even if it just gets me outside more often and gives me more experience with photography, then that makes it worth the price.

I too, just got my q 2 last week, fully aware of the purchase price tag. At almost 90, the Q2 is prompting me out of bed two full hours earlier than I’m accustomed, walking distances I never knew I had in me. And when my fellow photogs are packing up their gear to go home, I’m just getting started!! Now, I’m ready to take questions on the affordability on this fine instrument of fine art. Shoot this.baby as if you are paying for 36 exposures of film.

Very thoughtful video. I jumped into Leica from Sony last August with a Q2 and M10 with a few M lenses. Loved them all. I made the mistake of reading up on the SL system and dumped them all for an SL2-S with a couple SL lenses in May. I was missing the Q so much I have a mint second hand Q Titanium arriving Friday. Can’t wait.

Thank you! Oh wow, very nice. I lust after the SL2 constantly, but can't justify the purchase due to budget reasons. The differences between the Q and the Q2 are so minor. I'm sure you'll love the Q and it'll a great companion camera to the SL2-S. And that Titanium finish is so good. 🤤 Thanks for the comment! 🙏

Hey Nic nice review subbed cheers. I bought the Q2, initial thoughts were I was surprised at how much noise at 3200 and above, but in general the images from that camera are impressive. I killed the camera after just 14 days, it's now off to Wetzler for a new sensor so as it's a 4 month turnaround I bought a used damaged Q rear LCD dead, rest of camera is good. Loving it so far.

Thanks so much for the sub. Compared to a lot of other modern cameras at even half the budget, the Q2 leaves a lot to be desired in terms of high ISO performance. But I do agree, the overall IQ certainly makes up for it. I actually really enjoy the photos out of the OG Q, so I'm sure you'll be very happy with it until you get your Q2 back. I'm with you on the Q2. I've had the "Reporter" version for about 7 months and love it. I also have a M10-p, but a tremor makes it harder for me to use. So the Q2 is great. However, a fellow photographer and I went to a museum show opening the other day. He had an old 35mm film Olympus pocket camera and captured many more photos than I did. So I bought a GR IIIx for situations like that and on the street. I haven't used it much, but see it as complementary to the Q2. Thanks for your insightful review.

I love my Q2 Reporter, it does for me what it does for you. But I was in a museum with a photo buddy and he was using a tiny Olympus 35 mm film camera and getting way more pics than I. So I just bought a Ricoh GR IIIx for those tight quarters situations. I hoping the two will complement each other. One can put the GR IIIx in a pocket. The Q2 is inconspicuous on the street, but there are other situations where I think the GR could be better. Thanks for your review of the Q2. It was insightful and thoughtful.

The workflow is something I so seldomly hear people mention about the Q2. The speedy workflow is definitely a huge benefit to the original Q and any 24mp sensor camera. The pros and cons of the Q vs. the Q2 are a very interesting bunch that could have its own dedicated video. 🤔 Houston is definitely a different place for street photography. The much slower streets make for far fewer keepers, but it's also a low more slow paced shooting experience. I don't do well in busy places or crowds, so Houston works well for my comfort level. 🤠

Thanks for this, it’s one of the best, well-balanced reviews of the Leica Q2 that I’ve seen. Ultimately, like you say, the best camera is the one that makes you pick it up and want to use it and my experience is exactly the same, smaller pocketable cameras like the Ricoh GR3 and Fuji 100 are great products, but I just feel more “at home“ with the ergonomics of a “normal size” camera, but the Leica is significantly smaller and lighter than traditional DSLR’s, which (for me) make it the perfect solution. Ideally, I would’ve preferred it to have had the fixed 35 mm lens, but like you said, the 47 megapixel sensor is very “cropable”. something you didn’t mention is the macro style feature which is great for detail shots and works beautifully on the lens without having to press any buttons or dials. Although the fixed lens is a limitation, it is also a benefit, as it forces you to “zoom with your feet“ which in turn makes you think more about composition and perspective. I purchased the optional Leica Grip and separate Finger Loop.....very expensive, but makes it very easy and safe for single-handed operation - Cheers - Peter
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Peter! Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed my perspective on the Q2. I think I've been missing out because I haven't used the macro mode on the Q2 all too much. The mechanism to put the Q cameras into Macro mode is so lovely to use and really something special. Another benefit of a fixed lens camera is that you don't have to question which lenses to bring with you, or if a shot would have been better with a different lens. Because you've got everything you'd ever need in the Q. A 28mm!

Hi Nic and thanks a lot for this video! You have made a very good point saying that Leica, by some magical means, makes you go and shoot. That's exactly what happened to me when I got my Leica Q2 Monochrom. It's not perfect, it has some bugs, the Lica app is total crap, and I struggle with the urge to return my Q2M because it's quite far from what I expected from the brand. However, it's such a challenge to give it back, as I do want to keep it because of the reasons you so nicely outlined in your video ("the best camera is the one that has you taking photos").
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! The Monochrome is one heck of a camera, but it does take a certain amount of dedication to use. I really love the images out of the sensor, but I prefer color over B&W. Nic Great video. I myself am a 28mm shooter. That's why i got rid of the x100v (35mm ff). You would say that 7mm is not that big of a difference but it is. Right now my issue is to buy this camera vs buying the 18mm for the leica Cl. There are several benefits to them both, so Im kind of figuring it out. Thanks again for the very informative video.
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. I very much agree with you. 28 vs 35mm doesn't seem like a massive, but in actual use 28mm is much better suited for streetphotography. 35mm overall feels very middling for me. Interestingly enough, I actually have a fair bit of experience with the CL and the 18mm. I got to use both the CL and the 18mm for a while before eventually getting the Q2. The TLDR on the CL is that it's a great camera and I love the size of the body and the 18mm. With that being said, the Q2 is a league above the CL, and especially the 18mm lens. If you love 28mm as much as me, I'm sure you'll love the Q2. I'm just not sure if it's the right choice for everyone solely due to how prohibitively expensive the Q2 is. If you can somehow manage the budget, I'd go with the Q2. If you don't feel comfortable spending so much on the Q2, the CL+18mm will make for a really pleasant shooting experience with only very slight compromises.

Howdy there Steven! First off, thanks for checking out my code. It's really appreciated. When on the streets I try to keep it simple and often use single point af and spot metering. When I first got the Q2 I expected to be manual focusing most of the time, but the speed and precision of the AF in brighter/high contrast situations has made me very confident in the AF. All though I do zone focus in situations that the AF just couldn't keep up. I'm really glad to here you're enjoy your camera and getting out there shooting with it.

How is the low light, high iso noise in the photos you've made. I ' ve read that they can be untenable or ok. Can it may fixed in editing? BTW you come across as genuine in your video.
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
I don't have too many issues in low light, but the 47mp sensor doesn't handle low light as well as some of the BSI 24mp sensor on the market. I'd say 3200iso is very usable in most situations, but I often use 6400iso without concerns. The DNG raw files hold up very well in post and even at high iso values the files don't show major negative qualities such as banding or artifacting. Unless you're shooting very low light and need higher shutter speeds, I wouldn't be overly concerned about the low light capabilities of the Q2. Also, thank you for the kind words. I really wanted to try being myself in the video and I feel like I succeeded. 😁

Great video! Can you share what camera strap you are using and would you recommend it versus the small leather strap that Leica provides?
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
I use the Leica COOPH rope strap. The longer length version. I like it a lot and it's very well made, but it's very stiff. So stiff that it can be difficult to wrap around things, such as my arm while out shooting. I've been considering switching to a wrist strap because I often shoot one handed and just wrap the strap around my arm/wrist. I do like the stock leather strap that comes with the Q cameras. It fairly nice all things considered, and don't feel that an upgrade is needed unless you just want a different strap.

Currently riding a GR III and saving up for a Q2. What I miss with the GR III: a viewfinder, weather sealing and a distance scale I can quickly operate (the later one is also hard to find on modern glass I feel like; looking into the Fuji X-Pro 3 with the Fujinon XF23 F1.4 R as a cheaper alternative at roughly 2600 bucks but a part of me thinks I'd miss the full format sensor look and Leica glass quality). Subscribed. P.S.: I really like how the Q2 video looks, seems to have some problems keeping the focus though ;)

I'm actually wrapping up on a GRIII video right now. The lack of a viewfinder and weather sealing are big cons towards the GR. I actually enjoyed the the snap focus feature and feel it mostly makes up for the lack of a distance scale. The X-Pro is a wonderful camera, but has a fairly different feature set than the GR/Q. I haven't had the pleasure of shooting with the 23 1.4, but I sure want to. And the Q's video isn't bad straight out of camera. It's just very constasty and a little too saturated even on the natural profile. The AF isn't as bad as you'd expect. Especially in a talking head situation like I'd be using it for mostly.

Thanks for the helpful video. I have two question s🙋🏻♂️ about the camera sittings for the Q2. I am trying a combination for street photography. It is aperture priority with an limited Auto ISO that has minimum shutter speed of 1/250. My questions are : 1- If I put my shutter speed dial on Auto with the combination I mentioned above , the shutter speed keeps going slower than the minimum shutter speed I set with the Auto ISO . Do you have a solution for that ? I mean I want Auto shutter speed and Auto ISO but it is not working with me. 2- What is the best exposure preview for such combination? I mean I cannot have a real time exposure preview with that combination. I read the manual and it is not working. In many cases I under exposed my pictures because of that . It is so frustrating . It would be great if you could help me . Thanks 🙏

I currently shoot with an M10 Monochrom and I’m curious to know if shooting on a Q would be a vast departure from what I’m used to with the autofocus and all. Unfortunately there’s not a place in town that I’m aware of where I can rent one. Keep creating great videos like this. I will find you on instagram to see your photos from the Q2!
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Michael. Thanks so much for the support! I'm not sure how much of an improvement the Q2 would be over the M10m, but it would be a very different experience. Of course there's autofocus. AF is really nice, but I have started to zone focus more with my Q2 while on the streets. So AF might be a personal preference. I really enjoy shooting with an EVF and the Q has a really incredible EVF. It doesn't have a stranger or fake look, but it does give a great representation of what the photo is going to look like. Weather sealing is also very nice. The piece of mind that the IP52 rating give helps keep me out shooting despite the weather. Lastly, the photos from the Q have a unique characteristic to them. The M10 makes lovely photos as well, but they don't have the same character as the Q cameras. It could be the 28/1.7 lens or maybe slightly different color science. The biggest things for me with the Q over other camera systems is the fixed lens. Only having a single lens majorly simplifies my shooting experience and helps me focus on simply taking photos.

Hi Michael, I have a Q2 and wonder if I should have gone for an M10 instead as I've never used a rangefinder camera and just about all the renowned street photographers I know seem to use range finder Leicas. I guess we will never be satisfied until we own them both!

@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
I really do love my Q2 and it's been a great camera for me, but I don't think I could tell you to get the Q if you already own a GR. As a street camera the GR is better in a lot of ways. The size/weight, the highlight weighted metering, and the one-handed use are major pros in favor of the GR. I also feel that less compression from an 18mm lens is a benefit on streets. At the same f-stop the GR will have more depth of field than the Q because of the crop factor. That being said, the Q just might a better camera all around . The larger sensor and f1.7 make for more varied photos and better low light abilities. I also much prefer an EVF versus only looking at the LCD. The hot shoe OVF for the GR just didn't vibe with me, and I only used it with the snap focus feature on the GR. But if you really want the Q, I'm sure you'd be happy with it. It's a special camera in a way the GR just isn't.

Thanks for the review! Been looking into Q2 for some time now.. However, x100v which you mentioned as a variant, is on my radar too)). But your words that x100v is only "well over fourth of the camera" (Q2) at 13.12 kinda took me aback.. Really? Just like.. 40 or 50 % of Q2.. and GR III is "85%" ? I am very interested in x100v.. budgetwise)) I am just curious and not judging in any way) So how do you calculate here? Thanks again!
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Boris, thanks for the comment. I'll be honest, my calculations are completely arbitrary. The X100V is a wonderful camera and can easily take the place of the Q2 for most photographers. Just not for me. My gripes with the X100 are few. Actually, I only have two. The lens and the viewfinder. The first isn't necessarily an issue with the lens of the X100V. It's actually a very sharp and pleasing lens. I'm not a fan of the 23mm focal length as a 35mm equivalent. You never get the subject separation or bokeh I'd want from a 35 because of the of compression a 23mm has. Or lack thereof. The APS-C crop factor and subsequent lack of compression is a benefit for the GR and it's 18mm lens because of the type of photos I feel most will be taking with that style of camera. Street photography and quick snap shots. Which then the lack of compression is a benefit because at the same focal length the GR/18mm will have a greater depth of field than a ff 2mm. My second issue lies with the hybrid viewfinder. I can't shake feel it's very gimmicky. in use the viewfinder often makes the camera feel cumbersome and unnecessarily complicated. When brining the camera to my eye I'd often have to wait a split second for the sensor to register the camera was to my eye and bring the EVF forward. I preferred using the EVF to an OVF in most situations. Maybe if the OVF was your preference this wouldn't be an issue either. And that's exactly it. The issues are very specific to me though and my very specific preferences. If the focal length making for a poor facsimile of a normal lens and the viewfinder sometimes getting in the way aren't issues for you, then the X100V might be the camera. It offers value that few cameras do. And frankly, the Q2 doesn't beat out either the GR or the X100V in terms of value. The cost of the Q2 is something that still bothers me, even after a year of ownership. I wish I could have been happy with an X100V, but it's just not the camera for me. But it very well could be a great camera for you. Hopefully my comment helps you decide whether the X100V is the camera for you or not.

Great overview. I have had a very similar experience with my Q (version 1) except I can use the Panasonic/lumix batteries which are a whole lot cheaper. Despite being years old now the EVF is still the best I’ve ever used and I own a Fuji X100V and Sony R3. It’s just so large and roomy for tbe eye which makes it a joy to use. Other EVFs I found which may even have more pixels and better in specs they are always smaller in physical size which makes you squint more.

The EVF on the Q cameras are seriously incredible. I haven't used the R3, but compared to the X100V, the Q's EVF is wonderful to use. This is from the perspective of a glasses wearer of course. I'm glad you enjoyed my video and you're enjoying your camera. Thanks so much. 😄

@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience with editing on en iPad, but I'm sure you'd be fine. Your workflow might be a little bit slower when it comes to file processing, but that's a small consideration for the convince of editing on-the-go with an iPad.

I looked at a Leica Q2 today at a dealer, and it felt lower budget in the hand than I expected. I’m surprised that people don’t mention the lower quality feel compared to Leica M or SL cameras. Surprisingly, the CL had a higher quality feel to it. RIP CL. 😢 Maybe Leica wanted to make sure the Q2 wasn’t too heavy to satisfy more buyers. Weight wise, it was pretty close to the Contax S2 I had on me at the time of my visit.
@NicJohnson2 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting take. I've actually owned both the digital CL and the M10-P. I can agree that the CL is certainly well made. But I don't feel there is a noticeable quality difference between any of the cameras you mentioned and the Q2. I'd even go as far as to say the Q2 felt more confidence inspiring in terms of build over the CL and M10. Mostly because of the weather sealing and sturdiness that comes from a fixed lens camera. I only have a passing familiarity with the SL cameras. Speaking specifically on the SL2-S. And it felt as if it were carved from the same block of stone as the Q2 was. IE, no discernable quality differences. I don't feel I'm alone in feeling this way either. That's most likely why you haven't heard others speak onto a disparaging quality difference between the Q2 and the rest of the Leica line. Maybe you had failing expectations or a preconceived notion that the Q2 was of some unobtainable quality standard. And that could be why you were so dissatisfied with the Q2? Regardless, thanks for the comment and for checking out my video. It's all very much appreciated.

The quality will remain long after the price is forgotten. I've had the Leica bug since 1999, before that it was Minolta SRT 101. Both the M and the Q are superb tools if you're familiar with the handling. Keep on rolling!

Hey man! Thanks for the video. Just got the Leica Q2. Quick question re live exposure preview. I’ve come from Sony and Fuji systems and my experience has always been the exposure I see before I take the shot is the same exposure the final photo has. I’ve noticed in my Q2 that some of the shots I’m taking gets a much higher exposure than what I see in EVF/LCD. It seems to bump it up even if I set exposure comp to 0. Not sure what I’m missing since I’ve fiddled with all the settings too. Let me know if you might have any tips!
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The issue is the Q/Q2 have the aperture wide open while just looking through the EVF, but when you half press the shutter the aperture will reflect the actual exposure. This is where a little bit of difference in the preview comes from. If you half press the shutter you'll get the true exposure preview. My only work around is that I typically shoot at about -1 to -1 1/3 of a stop and correct in post. That way I don't have to fiddle with the exposure comp while on the streets. Definitely a weird quirk of the camera that might be able to be fixed in a firmware update.

Hi Nic, Some new interesting Perspektive. Good job. Just a Quick question. Did you rework the colours of your sample shots? They are quite intense and impressive. Something Leica is NOT very well known for. One of my little complaints about the Q2. I have seen a lot of photos, That I would not take a right “out of the box”
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. I'm really glad you enjoyed my video All the photos are edited. I have a set of presets I made that get the Q2's colors the way I like. I find the photos nice straight out of color, but I'm a fan of slide film and wanted to try replicating the look with the Q's photos.

That might be the battery for the original Q camera. The Q2 uses the BP-SCL4 battery, which currently doesn't have a generic option available. ☹️

Here is the thing about "expensive" Leica cameras - arguably, the cost of ownership is the lowest of any camera. I bought a Leica M8 in 2017 and used it for four years. In 2017 it cost me $1079 USD from a dealer (KEH). Go ahead and check if you don't believe me, but the camera is now worth more than I paid four years ago. I got paid to use a Leica. There is no other digital camera where this happens.
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Very interesting information. Asset value is definitely a large consideration to be had when buying something more luxurious like a Leica camera. It's really dope that you essentially made money on your camera. Thanks for the comment.
@GearZenChannel3 жыл бұрын
@@NicJohnson I think timing is key. A used but well cared for Leica holds value. If you buy new and beat it up badly, it will still hold value, but depreciation is more than if you bought used to begin with. I have owned several and always bought used.

@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. My comments on left eye dominant people was supposed to be light hearted in nature, but in retrospect I do feel it came off a little more mean spirited than I intended. I understand that there are many reason beyond choice as to why someone would shoot with their left eye opposed to their right. I just felt that with street photography having only a small portion of your face covered is a large advantage to a rangefinder style camera. I could have communicate this without alienating individuals who might not have a choice in what eye they use. Thanks again for your feedback. 🙏

@@NicJohnson Hey Nick, I’m left-eye dominant and didn’t feel disparaged at all! Thought your comment was good-spirited and enjoyed your entire video. There are people who are partially sighted and can only use their left eye - bit of insensative statement you made there about - 'sorry your not doing it right' Great expensive Camera but unfortunately not so great pictures - you should just use your mobile
@NicJohnson3 жыл бұрын
Well, I do apologies that you interpreted what I said as an attack. That wasn't my intent or desired outcome for what I said. My statement was simply a facetious jab at those with left eye dominance, versus an assault on those with disabilities. That being said, I still feel a huge advantage to a rangefinder style camera within the context of street photography is not having to cover a significant portion of your face. Meaning your dominant eye should be a major consideration when considering a camera. Especially one that costs as much as the Leica Q2. That's for the feedback. Have a good day. 😉
@johnman55373 жыл бұрын
@@NicJohnson Should it - there isnt a written rule on that. again if someone is partially sighted - they dont have a choice really, do they? if you saw someone and was using there left eye as dominant - just really try not to be judgemental about the whole situation. the fact that someone has a camera up to their face is enough giveaway that they photographing, i mean c'mon how much mor obviouse can you be - maybe you should invest in a harry potter cloak -that would be a much better investment :)
