I was surprised to see a cottage with thatch on the roof (FO5). I am aware of hardly any known examples in Notts. west of the Trent. Can anyone give a likely location of this cottage? In the meantime, congrats. to you Paul on providing such a useful archive of a bygone age. The pictures are very poignant. Are you perhaps related to the Victorian Nottingham photographer Edmund Turton?

I was born in 1941, we lived on Haydn Road and moved to Stanton on the Wolds 1943, married 1967, lived in West Bridgford until moving to Redhill 1989. Seen a few changes, not ALL for the best I feel but I’ve had a happy life in this area all told.

Once the Nottingham Council have used up every last bit of green space we have left, they'll have to build those high rises again. Also, the council have decided not to run the 'water feature' on the Market Square anymore because it costs too much. They've also just abandoned Broad Marsh leaving it in a half demolished state. They were going to bring back Drury Hill, bur alas, the council is the only thing that should be demolished. They have made Nottingham a laughing stock, instead of using all of Nottinghams potential.

It is a shame the Hidden People and the strange ones are only fiction, but they are fun and these stories are escapism and better than real life.

I have just watched this on dvd, it's still quite spooky, and has some very good effects for its time, and also has a good story. When it first aired, back in 1978, it gave me nightmares, so did space 1999 episode 10 dragons domain, and Shappire and steel episode 2, and children of the stones, good times. 😮😂

All this time I thought I had just made up this tv series in my mind apparently I was the only one who watched it on late night tv back in the early 90s/late 80s. It was such a great show. Never read the book or saw it for sale though. Cheers and thank you for sharing this gem and solving an age old mystery for me!

What is a watch house? Something like a lighthouse?
@dussaulthans2015
@dussaulthans2015 11 күн бұрын
Lighthouse: A tower or other building with a powerful light at top, erected at the entrance of a port, or at some important point on a coast, to serve as a guide to mariners at night. Watchhouse or watchtower: A tower in which a sentinel is placed to watch for enemies, the approach of danger, or the like.

I remember seeing a pretty close example of the actual picture box in an antique shop in the early 2000s. It was sold as a french presentation case for £40. I wish I got it. Personally I really liked the music, it was a pretty good show too. Fond memories for sure.

I remember watching this show when I was probably much too young. It was only when I was an adult I found a copy of the book and realised it was a Robert Westall. The show really freaked me out (in a good way), and I really enjoyed the book. I'll have to re-watch the show.

Taking the time to just upload these here with narration is enough. But, adding sound effects, music and other ambiance takes so much more effort, it gives atmosphere and is very appreciated!

Pemberton Street led to Hollowstone and then Stoney Street, which, in turned led to Hockley and the Old Market Square.

My paternal grandmother and aunts used to live on Pemberton street, which connected Canal Street with Fishergate. Our family was Catholic and their regular church was St. Patrick's. There was also a large square, called Plumtre Square. Canal St. led on to Parliament Street, which also led on to Hockley and into the city. There were two main bus garages on Parliament Street: the Trent garage and the Nottingham City Transport garage.

I had a grandstand seat for the fire, I live directly opposite the lorry park (the security lights would shine straight into the bedroom) The local electricity sub station was in the factory site so the power soon went out, we made tea for the fire crews on a gas burner. The “jam sandwich” Police van that blocked off Hoewood Rd was matt black by the end of the day.

I live on Aspen Rd which bounds the northern edge of the Sankey site. It was pretty exciting and we made tea for the firefighters. Had to fire up the barbecue after the power went out. That Police car blocking of Hoefield Rd was matt black at the end of the day. DS

Great video pal brings back loads of memories. All the things we've lost! Before I was 10 I remember going to the Black Boy, seeing the old Victoria Station, going down Drury Hill and spending lot of summers at Carrington Lido. Most of them gone by the time I left school. The only good thing to go was the Basford flats. Used to live St Annes (which has also f**cing changed)!

This is a very fine series and the British DVD by Network came out on the same day as "The Intruder", another excellent Sunday afternoon serial produced by Granada in 1972 which is also very unsettling but more adult in tone. While the "Come Back Lucy" DVD is now very hard to get at an affordable price - like many Network DVDs - "The Intruder" is readily available at around the original price. Sadly Network were gone less than a year later and that means that many of these series becoming out of reach on DVD although they do sometimes turn up on YT. The "Come Back Lucy" book by Pamela Sykes is very good but a bit more traditional in tone than the series with writer Colin Shindler adding his own touches with the political and football references including as a Manchester City fan a line about a "Peter Barnes dribble"!
