What type of oil goes in the steering box of a Massey Ferguson 231 tractor? It has power steering. How do I drain the old oil and how much goes back in? Thank You

Do you remember if there were tappets on 4 of the 8 valves(1 on each cyliner)? I cant see clearly on your video. I believe they are on the exhaust side.

Can i compliment you on a really good video. Can I just add something though from my own experience. At about 3.47 after you had taken out the PTO shaft you cleared out some gunk from the outlet of the diff housing and showed us briefly some needle bearings. You might wonder where they came from. Well along the length of the PTO shaft there are four bearing points. Starting from the back there is a large ball bearing (which you replaced) and then at the opposite side of the diff housing there is a 1 3/8" (roughly) needle roller bearing. That is where the needle bearings you showed probably came from. Next the PTO shift gear effectively supports the PTO shaft and finally the nose of the PTO shaft sits in a small needle bearing in the pump. It seems to me impossible for the pump needle bearings to have got back to the diff housing so that leaves the intermediate one. Given the fact there are four bearings it may be a moot point whether you need to be worried about the failed 1 3/8" needle bearing as it is a beast to get at and replace (I hope to do my own video on that). I am not sure if the needle bearings could have got into the rear ball bearing to jam it as I need to check but can I warn anyone looking to replace their PTO shaft that I bought a new one and later found that it was just too big by a few thou for the 1 3/8" bearing when in its housing which may be why my bearing failed! Slide a new PTO shaft in gently first without the rear ball bearing in place just to check it does not foul the needle bearing - it should slide in smoothly and into the pump housing. Well done.

Thanks. There were only one bearing there was destroyed due to the owner was driving with a PTO shaft being too long.

nicejob, i have a question, for fitting the tapered bearings on pinion shaft of mine tractor i would like to try preheating it with a stove. Is it safe or is there danger to damage it. I read that 130 C for 15 min would be fine, but would like some others opinion before i trie it out , tnx if u reply =)... and what is better heating in oil(what oil is it) or in stove ?
@Mr.MillersWorkshop
@Mr.MillersWorkshop 9 ай бұрын
Thanks. There are many ways to do that, and my preferred way is heating all bearing in and old fryer filled with som engine oil or something like that. I’ll heated the oil to about 160-165 C. And it works fine.
@janko9929
@janko9929 9 ай бұрын
thank you, i will try with a stove, wish me luck =). One more question, when u fitted new bearings on the diff pinion, did u use the old shims and it was good or u had to change the shim? I m just changing the bearings and the width of the bearing is very precise 32,75 mm so i assume the shim should be the same size, if the old bearing was the same dimension ??@@Mr.MillersWorkshop

Could it be the Dalmik semmering you are installing. It can, but asbestos ropes are better when properly installed and when the crankshaft does not have a large axial clearance. That semmering also seals well, but it can also cut into the crankshaft where the spiral oil deflector is.
@Mr.MillersWorkshop
@Mr.MillersWorkshop Жыл бұрын
That is your opinion. I have been using the rope seal for the last 35 years, and the updated version since it was released. And I never have any problems, with the to types of crank seals.
