Hard work by quite a lot of people tbh! We had two orchestrators on it and of course the input from NFO themselves - conductor Melvin Tay et al. Brilliant job all round but these things take some pulling together! Not to mention the mixing by NFO of the orchestra and the inclusion after the fact of the 'hybrid' elements. It's worth pointing out I think that the composer elected to pay himself to have NFO bring in some additional instruments/players above and beyond what was provided in the configuration outlined in the Score Relief instructions etc, which is all to the good and, of course, an option for anyone taking part in Score Relief etc in the future.

@@TheCueTube , thanks for elaborating! Yes, sounds like no minor effort on the part of everyone having contributed to this outstanding outcome! I do remember those I'm sort of friends with here, who have been working in the industry for going on 30 years, how at the earlier stages in their careers, they had collaborated on the score of a feature film, with the lead composer landing the gig and two more assisting writers. When time to record was around, all three travelled to the Czech Republic, Bratislawa for the orchestral recordings. They had spent days of printing the entire score for each section with multiple copies, having a bunch of machines run print jobs non-stop, which they either mailed or carried along, that part I don't clearly remember. There is a mini-documentary on their process, done by the film making brother of one of the assisting composers. That's when I learnt that for those final stages, you absolutely need a team of people collaboring on a larger project, it's totally unfeasible for one or two people only, is my understanding. The result is simply mind-blowing here, wow! One of the best scores I've listened to! It's clear now how many years of doing nothing but that or going to school for are really inevitable to arrive at this level of writing to score!

Is there an official term for when you hear something and think, “I could have done that…”? Some melodies I’ve never heard before but I’ll hear them for the first time and they sound familiar. What is that? Interesting that you mentioned this. Also, I’m one of those who chose not to study music in college (even though I had a four year scholarship) because I was afraid that 1. Learning too much music theory and forcing the music would kill the magic of it and 2. Probably the scariest for me, that I’d attempt to pursue a music degree and fail. Of course years later I wish I had gotten that music degree and not spent the time pursuing a liberal arts one, but I guess that’s just life and wisdom that comes with years. Now I just hope to pass on the knowledge I do have and love of music to my own kids and play for enjoyment. Edited the first time for adding a word I missed, but just finished the interview and wanted to add one more comment about kids: It definitely gets better. I have four ranging from 1-11. The sleepless nights don’t last forever. Some of my favorites melodies were written when I was just doing everyday life, taking care of my kids/daily tasks and the inspiration hit.

Great Video. Thanks for highlighting the importance of music. Thanks for the John Williams piece and the silent music examples. 10:05 Reality is even stranger if you consider that "music supervisors" for film and episodic, even if they have a specific degree/certificate from a college in "music supervision", have often failed the basic music theory courses, or have been able to bypass these classes and studies completely. Imagine a novel publishing editor who had failed or had never been mandated to take a basic grammar class, yet is awarded a degree in Literature in order to go into a career in novel editing? It would never happen. Yet in music this failure is the norm. This is why "briefs" are terribly written, and music review sessions are terribly managed, because no one can explain in even the simplest terms, what kind of music it is that they imagine for their projects. In reading many thousands of sync music briefs, I've never even seen basic terminology like "make it major" or "make it minor" or "make it neutral such as pentatonic", or "the melody should use leaps", or "avoid standard tonality, use tritone substitutions". Even knowledgeable musicians don't bother using proper terms because they rightly assume no one understands them, or worse, that those uneducated will misunderstand them.
