So why dont they have changeable carbide or hss bits? You could just change them instead of sharpening it for hours

Might save some effort to get a head saw with replaceable teeth. we metal detect each log but it saves some heartache only worrying about sending the blade to get hammered every now and then. Nice to see another circle mill! We’re a dying breed.

When I was a kid in the 80s, my dad used to run the old reciprocating sawmill (*1910) that had been in the family for generations. We lived in the region where the Battle of the Bulge took place. He would his shell splinters all the time that had embedded themselves deep in the wood. You'd have to use a metal detector and look for discolorations in the wood as telltale signs.

The saw mill I worked at, southern forest, we had a person we called the log scanner. The loader feading the mill would lay 6 to 8 rows of logs out at a time, and the scanner would cut the big knots off and take a metal detector across them. If he hit metal, on lets say a 16 foot log he would cut It behind where the metal was. So you could get an 8, 10, 12 or 14 it worked very well.

Don’t keep shortening that chain for too long or it will get so worn out it’ll start eating those sprockets up and sprockets are a lot harder to replace and a lot more spendy than some roller chain

@@RedBeardedPadre a tight chain with worn out barrels stretches and wear the teeth on your sprocket my man, I’m saying you can take a link here and there but if you keep doing it that the barrels in the chain will wear out causing the pitch to be incorrect causing the sprocket to hook and wear uneven. Trust me my man I do this stuff for a living and chain elongation is just scratching the surface of what we do!

And sprockets are easy to change till it’s a sweat on and that mofo won’t just come off with a little heat and then your sitting there cutting it off with a torch, way easier to just change that chan using some simple math to find out how stretched it is.
