The ball didn't flip out of the bowl because the bowl was holding the ball. The ball had to exceed the surface tension??? of the edge of the bowl before it could exit. So it exited the bowl later than desirable. Even with the half box, there's still a little bit of friction on the back side wall and the ball had a slight arch path to the right.

That's true! Copper can be more than one colour depending on the form it is in. Think about iron; it can appear black, grey, or even shiny in its pure form depending on the level of polish it has. When it reacts with oxygen and water, it forms iron (III) oxide which is red. In solution, copper is often a nice blue colour, but when excited directly with a flame you will see a green colour. Copper corrodes to make a green patina (like European copper roofs, or the Statue of Liberty in America).

Yeah, it might have been a tad more dramatic to add drops of copper sulfate to see precipitate form in a beaker of clear sodium hydroxide.
