Watching this you realise how invincible the Americans are. They had about a 400:1 kill death ratio. Incredible 😮💩

This is it by the way, this is all of the World War 1 action in the entire movie, the rest is a romance drama.

The main character in the trenches is played by Paul Gross (Americans would know him as the mountie in Due South). He also produced this movie, he spent 10 years raising money to make it. Later he made a great movie on Canada in the Afghan war called Hyena Road.

They focused on a lot of things they shouldnt have on this film. The romance plot, the crucified soldier, the massive part of the film that was effecivlvly a tourism Alberta ad. This could ave been great but ultimatly it was only mediocre

An old grandpa of one of my friends as a little kid in Toronto in the early 1960s told my friend that on trench raids they would cut off one of the dead Germans' pinkie fingers and stuff it in the hole they just made in the poor sod's belly. Kind of like their calling card. Sounded astonishing when I was 8; BS when I was a teenager, and now I tend to believe they were capable of it.

Apparently Passchendaele was a glorious British victory in which their troops suffered minimal casualties, although I've never read of it being described that way. Those German soldiers were terrible shots, just as their sons turned out to be a quarter-century later--in the movies and on television anyway.

That looks like such a bad idea to us today, literally running into gunfire but back then this is exactly what ww1 trench warfare would look like, and half the time you'd jump into the enemies trench with some sort of medieval melee weapon and start going absolutely berserk on the enemy soldiers, hoping to get them before they got you. A big f##k that!

What got me was that one guy who just followed his training. Which is just terrifying. Imagine in your head being like "ok wait for him to strike, block. Kill." It's that mentality that will make you win. What use does that have in the average society? How does one put that state of mind away?

One thing I dont like abt ww1 movies is how one sided some battles can be, like in 1:13 the german soldier charging could have shot the mg gunner or loader or from 1:54 to 3:11 most of the people being killed are german and the only canadians being killed are either by artillery, gunfire, or one lucky german soldier getting a sneaky stab. While i get this is to show how elite or committed the canadians were its still weird to see only 3 or 4 canadians dying compared to the 10 or 20 german deaths. Just a personal preference tho
