Cool find. Why don't you dive them anymore? Video from an ROV can't compare to being down there, can it?

I still dive but all the remote sensing equipment fills the boat. I'll dive it someday. The ROV does a great job with less exertion.

@@greatlakesshipwreckresearc6394 wish I could dive but arthritis in my 30s ended that. It's why I look forward towards others that can show us these amazing looks on history.

Fantastic Vid! Thank you! A couple of smaller tow barges also that are nav hazards heading to the N Entry from Houghton. 1 in Oskar Bay (partially above water), and 1 on the Portage Canal west shore, almost across from the mouth of the Boston Creek (fully submerged, but shallow enough to tear your engine off, and currently unmarked). But as you said, there are LOTS of wrecks in the waterway.

This is very close to where the larger cruise ship was self moored during the summer of 2022. Is it possible the anomaly was created by the massive side thruster it used to turn itself around, or to hold itself steady? It was in place for quite a while. I was there by boat and the wake and current it was creating on the N side was downright scary, and reminded me of whitewater rafting in my 17’ boat. See ya there this summer. I can hardly wait to check it out. Bring a fish rod with a lot of line and maybe pull up some old mining tools from a failed stope or adit ceiling???

Valerie I'm watching your documentary on the Lady Elgin. The giant rock that the chain caught on. That should really be examined closely. There is nothing but sand on the floor of lake Michigan. A Boulder that size amongst no others has to be an asteroid.

I couldn't agree more with the statement that turning the facts of her loss into a 'ghost' story is an insult to the victims and their loved ones. The facts of similar tragedies are are horrific enough without adding hyperbole.

We thought seriously about that, but the site is owned by the public and we have many other wrecks in Wisconsin with more portable artifacts that the state has chosen to release. We don't really have an overwhelming reason to restrict the location in my opinion and I really prefer not to do so because if someone really wanted, they could relocate it now that we've released the name/port/depth. I would also add that we haven't had much of an issue with artifact theft here in Wisconsin in the last decade. The community of tech divers that can visit this wreck is quite small and insular and I probably know most of them. Very few, if any, steal artifacts because they are mostly interested in creating content for social media from the dives, not collecting illegal artifacts that they will never be able to tell anyone about. The generation of divers who collected artifacts is now mostly too old to dive this wreck.

Congratulations, and thanks for sharing this video! I have always been intrigued with shipwrecks - I'm not sure why, perhaps Gordon Lightfoot's epic song during my formative years left an imprint. I very much appreciate this presentation describing the history of the ship and process to find old wrecks, and am excited to follow your work. I love that this will be preserved as a National Historical Site... thanks for sharing and preserving this bit of history!

As a kid, we spent weekends on the Mississippi by St. Louis. There are thousands of wrecks up and down there. There used to be a creepy set of smokestacks that stuck out of the water by the Eads Bridge during low water, now long gone. I sure would like to find some map of the wrecks on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. The rivers have changed courses a lot over the years I've found the ferry landings. Those were easy. They had streets named after them.
