Very enlightening, thank you. My interest in the Bannockburn stems from a family connection. My great grandmothers brother was one of the watchmen onboard and who was lost with the ship.

I couldn't agree more with the statement that turning the facts of her loss into a 'ghost' story is an insult to the victims and their loved ones. The facts of similar tragedies are are horrific enough without adding hyperbole.

Was the Bannockburn welded steel, or did they use rivets? Maybe being stuck on the sand bar cause the hull to bend back and forth all night, weakening the steel and welds. Then heading out into fifteen foot waves could have snapped her in half like the Edmond Fitzgerald. Welding was still in its infancy around the time she was built.

Certainly a riveted vessel, being built in 1893. Arc welding was indeed in its infancy at that time. It wasn't until WW1 that welding came into use in shipbuilding, mostly as a quick method to repair battle damage on riveted steel ships. The first completely welded steel hull vessel was launched in 1921.

Has there been any kind of search efforts in the area off Stannard Rock?
