There is a huge difference in price between the coach and roomettes, which I am sure is the reason that the upgrade is not allowed.

We loved seeing the Alamo, and the Riverwalk was just beautiful.

The Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle are the same train from LA to San Antonio. At San Antonio, the train splits and the Texas Eagle portion travels north to Chicago. The Sunset Limited cars continue on to New Orleans, where the route ends (since the hurricane destroyed the tracks beyond that.) We booked our roomette on the Texas Eagle, because there were none available on the Sunset Limited, but since we were making a stop in San Antonio, that worked for us. I understand your confusion about our booking a roomette. But for those who were following us on our trip, we explained in prior videos (if not explicitly in this one), that we had more segments planned in our overall trip across country than the 10 supplied by a USA Rail Pass would accommodate. This was one of the 3. We used points we had earned in prior years to book the roomette.

In New Orleans, we arrived late at night, so we took a rideshare. We could have walked to some hotels. I think it was about a mile to the one we chose to stay at.

Sure. But we took a rideshare rather than walk to our hotel in the dark.

The food was the same as we had been eating all across the country and back, so we didn't include pictures on this segment. For example, check out the Emeryville to LA video (about 6 minutes in). We ordered the same food. We really enjoyed it.

They are going to meet the Texas Eagle at its next stop. I don't remember which one that was, but it was somewhere in Texas.

It's good. And generous. You certainly won't go hungry.

We've a couple of experiences with trains that get further and further behind because of the freight trains. We still choose to take more trips with Amtrak, but it is disappointing that Amtrak is always the one that has to wait. Especially since the law states it should be the reverse.

The discounts on the USA Rail Pass are usually offered annually in Jan-Feb timeframe. That is when you will likely find the lowest prices.

You are right, and we would have done that, but our plans were not certain when the sale was on this year (and it wasn't as big a sale as it has been in some years). So, we waited until we knew we could make the trip.

I'm not sure, but I think you are asking about our access to the Metro Lounge with our coach ticket. With last year's travel, we had earned Amtrak Select status, which gives access to the lounges.

We got a ride with a relative, and he just dropped us off and headed back home without parking at the station.

Amtrak Guest Rewards members that have enough points to earn Amtrak Select level have access to the lounges. Our travel over the last 15 months allowed us to get Amtrak Select and gave us access to the lounges.
