Lovely study and a great explanation. As for the colours - they refer to the national colours used by Grand Prix teams of different countries. British - Green, German - White (or silver), French - Blue,, Italian - Red etc. The colours stopped being used so much once advertising appeared on the cars.

Yes but it was a long while ago. I painted a bridge in watercolor and then gouache to compare the two. I have changed a bit in method and should do that again some time. Thanks for watching

You totally can! A lot of muddiness tends to come from having a tiny bit too much water and it doesn't have the strength in consistency that you need. Thanks for watching!

Awesome job!! What paint/spray do you use mixing area? Mine diy palette sprayed with matte white enamel stain like crazy! Any advice would be very thankful!!
@JaredCullumАй бұрын
Thank you! I have used a couple different kinds. You’d definitely at least want satin or gloss but gloss would likely bead and shine a lot. These were done with “Klass Kote” 2 part epoxy enamel. Automotive acrylic enamel works. They sell 2k sprays too- that you push a plunger in and it blends the 2 part. All metal boxes stain a bit though- you’ll never outrun that. I have a couple expensive, nice boxes I got from the professionals and they stain too. If staining bothers you, you may enjoy porcelain palettes more. They take anything and clean to zero the easiest. My recent boxes I’ve used a marine 2 part paint. Those paints are expensive though and by the time you buy them and the thinner and spray bottles you have pretty much bought a pro-made box - oy.

I am pretty new to gouache. I am used to layering in watercolor and want to do this in gouache, too. I see that YOU do it most successfully, but I have trouble with lifting. Please give me some advice!
@JaredCullum2 ай бұрын
In my experience- it’s more than likely water ratio… when you’re layering or painting - after the initial stain or block in- it’s best to keep it at around 0-10% water. Any water in the gouache weakens it greatly and lifts other layers. So you want enough on the brush to move it but not so much that it lifts. So it’s best to tap it on a paper towel to reduce the water. A fully charged brush has too much water. So don’t go clean, load, paint. You want to clean, tap off excess and then load and paint.
@tamaras55242 ай бұрын
Thank you for the voice-over explanation, it's very helpful. Your palette appear to be dried gouache with fresh paint on top. Do you spray the dried gouache to help it mingle with fresh gouache? I see quite a few artist fill a sealed stay-wet palette and keep re-wetting with water which dilutes the gouache. and topping off colors as needed. I'm new to gouache and have been squeezing from the tube each sitting but it's wasteful if decide to not use my gouache for a length of time.
@JaredCullum2 ай бұрын
It is- I let it thoroughly dry between use. You can reactivate gouache enough to do smaller sketches and work. If you’re doing anything bigger than a business card for study - it’s best fresh from tube. My preferred method is pouring a little in paper towel, rolled up into a 1” tube and dipped in water. That keeps it wet for a long time. If you’re pouring it in a palette it is prone to mold or pouring out if you tilt it. It also dries into chalky bits so I only recommend that if you’re doing a lot a lot of gouache painting.

do you stain the page with gouache? if yes, how do you manage not to re-activate it when painting on it?
@pmnirmal60522 ай бұрын
I think that the stained colour should dry totally before you can paint another layer over it. Further, when doing the layer on top, we need to paint it as far as possible with a single stroke. Multiple stroke may cause the water in the top layer to seep fast into the bottom layer and re-activate it. So we need to avoid doing scrubbing with the brush when doing the top layer.
@JaredCullum2 ай бұрын
The key is in the water ratio. Great observation, Pmnirmal.. yes it is all gouache. The stained layer has about 80% water so it’s super loose. It doesn’t come undone too much. From then on- I use next to NO water. Just enough to clean the brush and even then I tap it on a paper towel to reduce water. It’s the water ratio that messes with layers. If you get the water minimal you can layer well. Not enough and it’s all dry brush so it takes a bit to get that right consistency. I try to be direct as possible and not layer too much because it is a risk but the key really is controlling that water ratio so it doesn’t loosen up beneath.
@shroomaster49112 ай бұрын
@@JaredCullum thanks for the answer, and yes this is my struggle, I've been painting with gouache now for a year and still struggle everytime with the water balance! One tip someone gave me is to stain the page with watercolors since it doesn't re-activate and it worked, but the problem is you have to have watercolors just for staining purposes
