I’m back here to rewatch this great documentary as his fellow countryman Hoshoryu was just named Yokozuna. The Mongolian impact on sumo has been legendary.

As a Mongolian, I know he didnt gave up Mongolian citizenship. He would have never accept Japanese citizenship if he could own sumo stable.

I understand Hakuho's perspective as being a foreigner and wanting to be accepted by the Japanese and sometimes feeling like they were rooting against him. But at the same time, I think quite a bit of what was happening was that Hakuho was so good for so long, that you naturally start rooting for the underdog. During Hakuho's prime, it's almost an impossible feat to beat him. It's hard not to root for someone who came close to challenging his supremacy.

Great documentary. The other side of being a successful yet foreign sumo master. Thank you for all the insights and adding the many mental hardships a Yokozuna endures…
