You're welcome. Yeah, it is interesting how some wrestlers applied weight lifting training as well. When you think about it for a while, you will realize that a lot of Yokozuna wrestlers applied weight training such as Chiyonofuji, Asashoryu, Harumafuji etc.
@JTM18093 жыл бұрын
Nah, the rikishi started to hit the gym several generations ago already. The likes of Takanosato and Chiyonofuji mainstreamed it. They were known to lift weights all the time. Even Hakuho, who talked a lot about traditional training actually did a lot of gym sessions.

Terunofuji's only weakness as I see are his multiply injured knees. If a strong enough opponent gets an angled push in and encroaches, they can push him down. But if he locks both the opponent's arms or gets his massive hands on the belt, that's a "Goodbye, see ya next time" to whatever opponent.

True, he would benefit greatly from a powerlifting form coach like Harumafuji had back in the day I believe. He's ridiculously powerful but as you said some of the forms(like throwing a large weight around with a rounded back) can gift a one-way ticket to Snap City pretty fast if one is unlucky. I just sprained my left pec major and pec minor yesterday fooling around with a 135lbs kettlebell, it's real easy when you get a second of carelessness with larger weights.

Sumo is in the dark ages when it comes to sports performance. Japan has had some great strength sports athletes over the years but it seems like they figured everything out on their own. Unless there is some sort of concentrated effort to study the best athletes and document what works and why, they are going to have to rely on knowledge from the soviets, the chinese, or the american interpretations. The language barrier could make that an issue. I used to follow a few social media pages of powerlifting gyms in japan so they exist but it seems like it is a niche sport and most focus on bench press competition.

@AKSsasori3 жыл бұрын
Its a lot more complicated than "be strong". When you grow up and the 3 primary hobbies of everyone everywhere is horseriding, archery and wrestling, you inevitably end up buff as fuck. There's a Mongolian documentary about Hakuho's dad who is the GOAT of Mongolian Wrestling (first 6x National Bokh Wrestling Champ, Hakuho compared it to 35 Makuuchi Yuushos) where Hakuho brings his dad along to an amateur Sumo tourney and Hakuho's dad called 14 out of 15 matches' outcomes before they began purely based on line of sight, stance and small details like that. I can't recall the Mongolian term, but it translates to something like "Forethought", It's something similar to Karate's Go-no-sen, Tai-no-sen and Sen-no-sen (Post, Simultaneous-, and Pre-initiative) where you try to read what the person is doing before they do it and planning around it, either by attacking after, at the same time as, or before the opponent acts. TL;DR: Mongolian Wrestlers say little but think big.

Well the thing is that sumo wrestlers don't need to train benchpress very often in order to wrestle well. Just take a look at the former Yokozuna Harumafuji. He was able to lift "just" about 100 kg on bench press and still managed to make to the Yokozuna. So long story short, being super strong in sumo is for sure a good advantage but it isn't necessary.
