Heyl Patterson builds big ones and I made this little one. I started with some aluminum and steel scraps. After that added some plastic details and paint.

I designed the methods to Fabrication of an actual railroad car rotary dampers. 4 of them went to Russian coal power plants. The coal freezes up and can't be dump out the bottom. That's why they make rotary dampers. Western Pennsylvania Steel Fabrication in New Castle Pennsylvania. We started large projects in the early 90s was when I started to work there. A guy tried to start making it named Joe it was all messed up. It was then I fixed his and then designed Fabrication. Pretty Kool I like your little one. I'm straight Mister

Do you use rotary couplers? If so how are they configured. Are they Kadee couplers? I have one of those rotary car dumpers put out be Walthers and want to scale it up to 1/29 or garden scale but figuring out the rotary couplers has been a road block for me.
@paulmack40903 жыл бұрын
The couplers are Kadee #5 modified to rotate. You can see them working better in my first rotary dumper video. I take the coupler apart, drill a hole through the shank (down its length), cut the head off and insert straight pin to reattach the head. Reassemble and install.

Is your car advancement system a actual system or modeling system... Either way, pretty nice. You don't need motive power to move cars through the unloader....
@paulmack40904 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Donald. The car advancement system, or indexer, is based on a real machine, needed to accurately place the railcars in the rotating dumper. Mine does the same function but doesn't look exactly the same. If you look up "rail car indexer" or "train positioner" you will find information on the various kinds. Some are hydraulic, with either hydraulic motors or hydraulic rams but I like the moving parts and simplicity of the cable driven indexer. In the description, there is a link to a build thread on the whole facility including the indexer.

Really nice dumper, one of the best I've seen, IMHO. I especially like your clamping system. It looks like you have 2 'cams'. The upper cams rest on beams keeping them raised until the dumping rotation starts and I'm assuming that the lower cams lock/unlock the clamps in against the car somehow. Is that correct? Do you have drawings, plans or possibly a website with more information about your clamps and dumper as a whole? Thanks!
@paulmack40905 жыл бұрын
finster101, thank you for the comment and you are correct in how it works. The lower arm is spring loaded and when it moves off its cam, it clamps down on the string and locks the car clamps in place. Well sort of, the car clamps can still be moved but it holds tight enough to keep the car in place while it's being emptied. That was by far the hardest part to figure out.

Looks awesome, and combined with the rotary dumper it's a cool setup. Does the dumper empty out in the top of the loader? Best regards Mikkel
@paulmack40904 жыл бұрын
Mikkel Agner Clausen that would be ideal but it dumps into a tub under the layout.
NIce job. Can we get a little "how it's built" video if it's not too much to ask? Or even just a 360° shot of this awesome shaker? I like this design better than the ones around KZbin using a reciprocating saw, tbh.

Hi Paul, Great job, very prototypical, what did you use to actuate the opening and closing of the chute? Any pics or video on the working mechanisms. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@paulmack40906 жыл бұрын
Hi David, the gate mechanism is a gear motor with a crank that moves the gate back and forth over the opening above the chute. I don't have a video but I wrote an article in the April 2010 Railroad Model Craftsman magazine that has photos of another working loadout I made.
