I was thinking about applying but man... after seeing those portfolios that got rejected I feel damn behind. I still have a little over a year and I'll try my hardest to get there, and even if I get rejected I'll apply anyways. Thanks for opening my eyes, I realized I have been getting comfortable in my talents and haven't really been improving them.

when i see sheridan grads from 2000-2014 sharing their portfolios, there's no way they would be accepted into today's sheridan. That being said, those were GOOD portfolios. I found those old portfolios because those people became industry professionals, which is to say they obviously improved a lot at sheridan, enough to break into the industry. The whole score sheet system glamorizes a primordial hopeful, competitive urge within young artists, and the viral accepted portfolio videos bring more attention to the program. Essentially, the amount of applications increases each year, but the number of seats in the program remain the same, so it becomes near-impossible for skilled artists with potential (like you) to get in based on the program's arbitrary guidelines. When I see people so desperate to get into Sheridan specifically I have to wonder if they're actually attracted to the program, or just the prestige of going to school with people at such a high skill level their portfolios are basically industry-ready. Other art schools would gladly host people with the rejected applications and they offer the same classes and industry veteran professors.

Ngl I almost teared up watching this. As someone who have been demotivated these past few years that I lose interests to draw, or create something of my own (which is ironic bc I've always been the 'art kid' throughout my life), I kinda feel comforted by this video. I'm from Indonesia too, yes recourses aren't that great here. So I spent a lot lot of my parents' money to study arts, and I feel so guilty for that, because even after all that courses, my skills doesn't seem to fit into my standards let alone college standards. Seeing my friends, and people on social media, having their arts so good already, or seeing minors got accepted to prestigiously art schools... I mean I'm happy for them, but it really demotivated me, so much that I get artblocks for a few years. Well anyway I just wanna say thank you for making this video. Seeing someone experienced something like this and they're able to see on the bright side, not losing motivation, and even choosing different paths (I mean you know what's good for you, what's not for you, and you've succeeded, opening your eyes to see that your 'old dream' isn't the only choice, that you can be happy, be successful, even when you don't reach (you changed) your path. It's just a path, the end goal is still the same, yk). It motivated me, it makes me... Not so scared anymore, it comforts me. Thank you so much for this video. Sorry for blabbering too much, and for this unorganized paragraph lol

OMG this is great LOL. Your art is beautiful! This vid was recommended to me after I watched a clip of Luxiem singing I Want it That Way at anime impulse. I wondered if they chose to sing this song partially because of Mysta 😆🥲

The art school itself does not matter. You do not need an art degree to work in the creative industry at all. Employers are looking for two things, portfolio and experience. The hard thing to get without a proper education is internships so when you choose your school make sure to select a school with as much internships as possible, nothing else really matters. Art is a self-taught subject.

Happy new year!! 🥳 Also thanks for posting this video, it inspired me to make my own 2023 art goals haha I really like what you said about knowing why specifically you want to learn something. You need to have a "why" to be motivated. In response to your question, I got better at drawing from observation in 2022! Looking forward to seeing your stories in the future!! 💖

Oh boy, let me just drop this in/vent real quick, because you just helped me out a lot. Long story short, I graduated with an IT degree in 2020, and I got into drawing at at the same time, Age 21/22. It was about that time I realized "Hey, drawing isn't an innate talent you either have or dont, you learn it." So in March 2021 I decided to take learning it seriously, and am now looking to apply to the NYC SVA, as that is the nearest school near me. On the one hand, things are going great for me. I have a job that can sustain me and gives me time to improve on my art, I dont have any student loans, I have my own apartment and car, Im set. On the other hand, It sucks. Ever since I learned talent isnt a pre-req, I have pushed myself to learn. And I have made progress. I can draw a bit now, with perspective being my strong suit and Im starting to get mannequinization down and posing. Past few days I have been looking at accepted portfolios on youtube and man. I. Am. So. Fucking. Far. Behind. It is gut wrenching. I'm 24 turning 25 next year. I have improved a lot, but these portfolios are lightyears ahead of me. I know its a cardinal sin, compare your progress to yourself, not others, but with the feeling that I wasted my HS years playing games, and college for a degree I dont use, and these absolutely stunning portfolios are mostly done by people going into these schools shortly after HS. My past 2 years, I feel at this rate, it wont be enough. To reach their levels I'll probably be 30. Now it feels the past two years learning I have not been pushing myself enough, like its another 2 years, basically kinda wasted, even with the progress made. 7:30 and onwards damn near brought me to tears. Im going to keep learning, Im going to keep trying, even though sometimes it's basically torturous. Going to spend the night thinking about how to revamp my learning, and up the ante to the level it needs to be. Thank you, Shine on Cielle.

The only mistake you could make is to wait longer. 25 is young. 30 is young. Go for it and don't at 40 look back and go, "I'm so old now, I wasted so much time." I know, because that's the mistake I always make. Also draw for the love of it so that even if you don't become a professional, you're still enjoying the journey. That alone will keep you young forever. You're all good, buddy!
