Oh boy, let me just drop this in/vent real quick, because you just helped me out a lot. Long story short, I graduated with an IT degree in 2020, and I got into drawing at at the same time, Age 21/22. It was about that time I realized "Hey, drawing isn't an innate talent you either have or dont, you learn it." So in March 2021 I decided to take learning it seriously, and am now looking to apply to the NYC SVA, as that is the nearest school near me. On the one hand, things are going great for me. I have a job that can sustain me and gives me time to improve on my art, I dont have any student loans, I have my own apartment and car, Im set. On the other hand, It sucks. Ever since I learned talent isnt a pre-req, I have pushed myself to learn. And I have made progress. I can draw a bit now, with perspective being my strong suit and Im starting to get mannequinization down and posing. Past few days I have been looking at accepted portfolios on youtube and man. I. Am. So. Fucking. Far. Behind. It is gut wrenching. I'm 24 turning 25 next year. I have improved a lot, but these portfolios are lightyears ahead of me. I know its a cardinal sin, compare your progress to yourself, not others, but with the feeling that I wasted my HS years playing games, and college for a degree I dont use, and these absolutely stunning portfolios are mostly done by people going into these schools shortly after HS. My past 2 years, I feel at this rate, it wont be enough. To reach their levels I'll probably be 30. Now it feels the past two years learning I have not been pushing myself enough, like its another 2 years, basically kinda wasted, even with the progress made. 7:30 and onwards damn near brought me to tears. Im going to keep learning, Im going to keep trying, even though sometimes it's basically torturous. Going to spend the night thinking about how to revamp my learning, and up the ante to the level it needs to be. Thank you, Shine on Cielle.

The only mistake you could make is to wait longer. 25 is young. 30 is young. Go for it and don't at 40 look back and go, "I'm so old now, I wasted so much time." I know, because that's the mistake I always make. Also draw for the love of it so that even if you don't become a professional, you're still enjoying the journey. That alone will keep you young forever. You're all good, buddy!

Have you tried Seneca or Emily car?? They are honestly very good schools too!I went to Seneca some people ended up working on the movie inside out. A lot of people don’t talk about them but they are hidden gems! Try not to put your eggs in one basket!

This! I’m actually planning on going to Seneca. I’ve studied Graphic Design there before and loved my experience there. Plus it’s a lot more affordable than Sheridan’s Animation program.

These were my exact worries last year as my third year applying. I knew i was ready and at the level to get in it was just those outside forces that would determine everything. Im so sorry. Your work is amazing. My students also had amazing work and did not get in and i was so confused as to why. This year sucked. Knowing this could happen to me or anyone who applies (especially after multiple attempts) is just awful. Super insightful video and im sure a lot of people will learn a lot from your reflection. Looking forward to following your work!

The art school itself does not matter. You do not need an art degree to work in the creative industry at all. Employers are looking for two things, portfolio and experience. The hard thing to get without a proper education is internships so when you choose your school make sure to select a school with as much internships as possible, nothing else really matters. Art is a self-taught subject.

Ngl I almost teared up watching this. As someone who have been demotivated these past few years that I lose interests to draw, or create something of my own (which is ironic bc I've always been the 'art kid' throughout my life), I kinda feel comforted by this video. I'm from Indonesia too, yes recourses aren't that great here. So I spent a lot lot of my parents' money to study arts, and I feel so guilty for that, because even after all that courses, my skills doesn't seem to fit into my standards let alone college standards. Seeing my friends, and people on social media,having their arts so good already, or seeing minors got accepted to prestigiously art schools... I mean I'm happy for them, but it really demotivated me, so much that I get artblocks for a few years. Well anyway I just wanna say thank you for making this video. Seeing someone experienced something like this and they're able to see on the bright side, not losing motivation, and even choosing different paths (I mean you know what's good for you, what's not for you, and you've succeeded, opening your eyes to see that your 'old dream' isn't the only choice, that you can be happy, be successful, even when you don't reach (you changed) your path. It's just a path, the end goal is still the same, yk). It motivated me, it makes me... Not so scared anymore, it comforts me. Thank you so much for this video. Sorry for blabbering too much, and for this unorganized paragraph lol

On the same boat. I didn’t get in this year, either. And it devastated me, too. I knew of so many people on the hopefuls server that I just knew would get in-but the part-time professors had to really throw things off. Whatever you do, no matter how hard you try, and what risks you take in the process, you can’t control the conditions. Regardless of the professors’ decision, you cranked out some really great stuff, and I personally believe you deserved a higher mark. Even the completion of three portfolios three years in a row is an accomplishment in and of itself. You should be very proud of yourself and what you’ve done to get your foot in the door. Wishing you the best for the future & beyond!

Cielle you are absolutely amazing and I admire your determination so much to spend those entire years to get into sheridan, im sure they didnt go to waste for that much time you got to improve! I really did learn so much!! Getting accepted to this school served as a strong motivation for me the past years, and it's what pushed me to work so hard. Though the end result is not what I had hoped, the skills I learned won't go anywhere so it's a win at the end of the day! Fingers crossed that everything works out nicely for Australia bcs i'm gonna go tackle u in a hug mile >:))

Wow, what an incredible portfolio, and some really powerful and moving words. You should be so, so proud!! Your improvement is evident and your motivation speaks for itself, and even if Sheridan can't see that, I grantee everyone else will and it will pay off in its own way. I can't wait to see how far you will continue to go!

I love this video. I probably will rewatch this a lot as I improve my art skills over the years. One thing that hit me hard is that I do find myself being too proud of my work and dreaming of all the good things that could happen to me in the future, not realizing of that things could go bad. My standards are waaaaay to high for myself. That stopped after watching this video though. Thanks so much. I’ll try my best to humble myself. Also you’re absolutely amazing!

I was thinking about applying but man... after seeing those portfolios that got rejected I feel damn behind. I still have a little over a year and I'll try my hardest to get there, and even if I get rejected I'll apply anyways. Thanks for opening my eyes, I realized I have been getting comfortable in my talents and haven't really been improving them.

This was a video I needed. With a couple years of high school left I was also planning on applying to Sheridan, though as of now my art skills are nowhere near yours! I was wondering, how do you get art tutors for this sort of thing? I'm from Indonesia too, and I can't seem to find alot of resources for things like art school prep (only art studios for kids haha)
@ciellever
@ciellever 2 жыл бұрын
Hi!! There are usually a lot of current students that offer tutoring, as well as institutions like APW and PortPrep. You can find more info in the Sheridan Hopefuls server, they usually have a channel just to promote tutors!

when i see sheridan grads from 2000-2014 sharing their portfolios, there's no way they would be accepted into today's sheridan. That being said, those were GOOD portfolios. I found those old portfolios because those people became industry professionals, which is to say they obviously improved a lot at sheridan, enough to break into the industry. The whole score sheet system glamorizes a primordial hopeful, competitive urge within young artists, and the viral accepted portfolio videos bring more attention to the program. Essentially, the amount of applications increases each year, but the number of seats in the program remain the same, so it becomes near-impossible for skilled artists with potential (like you) to get in based on the program's arbitrary guidelines. When I see people so desperate to get into Sheridan specifically I have to wonder if they're actually attracted to the program, or just the prestige of going to school with people at such a high skill level their portfolios are basically industry-ready. Other art schools would gladly host people with the rejected applications and they offer the same classes and industry veteran professors.
