Just found this video whilst debating my first rc car for 20 years. I’ve been looking at the Kyosho since I’m an engineer and the build experience is as important for me and your video has helped me validate the javelin is the right pick. In terms of the quality of the video I saw your comment about insomnia and completely disagree. You present a really clear narrative, your calm tone is an asset and the lack of hype which so many other channels add makes for a more enjoyable watch. You can be proud of this video and allow yourself space to accept the positive reviews.

Can the Turbo scorpion be converted to be more like a tomahawk with the tub removed and just use a tomahawk body? I think the best combo of all the Scorpion type chassis would be a turbo scorpion (wider and longer plus 2.2 wheels) but built like a tomahawk.
@KaiCityRC4 күн бұрын
I think it would be possible, but I've not personally tried it. There would require some work involved. The main problem area is the rear. The rear shock tower is shaped differently and *may* cause some interference on the Tomahawk body. You may also need the Tomahawk roll bar (it is shaped differently to the Turbo) as the Tomahawk body clips into place on the roll bar. Though it seems as though the Turbo roll bar would line up with the bracket on the Tomahawk body. You would also need all the parts for the upper and lower decks, servo mount, battery holder and the body mounts too (the front of which is part of the steering arms).

Well, I bought my Optima Mid back in 2022, out of a comment a friend of mine made. I was in need of building a new kit, and never owned a Kyosho one. The hobby shop had a Javelin and the Optima Mid, and I just loved the OM right away. When I drove it for the first time, it was like I magically rediscovered RC. To this date, that is my best RC car, even though Battery and ESC space could be better. Great video David!

I am building a dirtmaster - did you switch out any of the plastic bushings/metal (part UMB583) with bearings? If so, which ones? I saw another youtuber switch out the plastic for bearings.
@KaiCityRC10 күн бұрын
The bearings you'll need are Kyosho BRG002 to replace the UM583 bushings. And while you're at it, you might as well get a set of BRG007F flanged bearings to replace UM584. That'll give you a fully ball raced steering setup.👍

My understanding is they're essentially a Scorpion with a truck body. I'd happily add a one to the collection...except I have never seen one. Ever! At the track, at a meet. For sale or on display. They don't appear to exist in Japan.

Hello, great video. I am looking to buy my very first 2wd buggy. Looking at Kyosho dirt master or Tamiya dt02 sand viper. Which one would you recommend?
@KaiCityRC14 күн бұрын
There’s quite a difference in price between the two. The Dirt Master is superior to the DT02 in many regards and if you’re planning on taking it to the track and racing, its is by far the better choice. Nevertheless the DT02 is a whole lot of fun. I have several variations and enjoy running them. For casual running in the backyard or park, they’re great. And they can be modified and used for racing in a suitable class.

Wow this brings back memories. I owned a Salute new back in the late 80's. So hard to find now... I really wish it was re-released to get back into ownership again. What would you recommend as the closest available alternative?
@KaiCityRC14 күн бұрын
Salute (so far) has not been re-released. Chassis wise, the Optima, Javelin are essentially the same. If memory serves it used gold shocks seen on the Turbo Optima. It might be possible to find a reproduction body and build something close to a Salute.

Hi, I'm brand new to RC kits (first one is arriving today) and the yellow and black colourscheme on your Dirtmaster looks fantastic, so I was wondering what paints you used for it?
@KaiCityRC17 күн бұрын
Hi there! Congratulations on your first RC kit! Enjoy the build. I use Tamiya PS paints for all my bodies as they’re really the only option locally. They’re very good paints. But any paint for polycarbonate/lexan will do. My Dirt Master is painted in several coats of PS6 yellow and then backed with white. The decals add the contrasting black. The rear wing isn’t the kit one, it’s from the Kyosho Javelin and comes molded in black. 👍

Heya, thx for all the great videos!! Got a question about the dirt master or dirt cross. I cant decide what motor am gonna put in there. A 4000kv or 4600 kv (on 2s) its for fun stuff around the park. Not for track. What do you think? 🙂
@KaiCityRC20 күн бұрын
It all depends on the type, size and layout of the track you plan to run on. Our tracks are on the small side. I run 13.5 hobbywing in the Dirt Cross (around 3,200kv) and that's plenty for the narrow technical indoor carpet track I run on. My local dirt track is similarly sized, with lots of loose dirt. Traction is always an issue, so I wouldn't want to go too much quicker. The Dirt Master is a handful on the dirt trackwith a stock 17.5t. I'd probably run a 13.5t in it for carpet use. I have videos of them running on track, so it will give you an idea of what they're like. Hope that helps.

@@KaiCityRC Thx, that a huge help indeed. Am gonna bring it back then to 3500kv ish. Because were we live i have a good sized backyard to play in. and i think the can can go Max 3652 i guess? All on 2S (got 3s also, but that is gonna destroy the gears for sure..)

Great video. Please follow-up and let us know how things go. More information and your opinions on how the Tamiya DT-03's run would be great!
@KaiCityRC21 күн бұрын
Will do. The fifth and final round of the 2024 season is due to be held in February. As I ran the PR Racing S1 RM in all the prior rounds, I'm leaning towards using the same buggy for the final. The 1st race of the 2025 season will likely be in April. DT-03's do very well in our style of racing and on our local track. I have several videos on the 2022 and 2023 race seasons which were limited to DT-02 or DT-03 chassis. Might be worth a look.

Cool, shouldnt have a problem with any Tamiya products, as they never podiumed when these cars were new. Its was either Associated or Losi that dominated, if fellow competitors are running Tamiya, you'll clean house!
@KaiCityRC21 күн бұрын
Tamiya's can do quite well on our track with the style of racing we do. A mildly modified DT-02 took third place in round two last year, beating out the likes of Genova, Dirt Master and an RB10 RTR.

The Fazer manual can be downloaded from Kyosho's homepage. It has a lot of useful information on what setup changes can be made. You've got three lower and three upper shock mounting positions, plus two sets of spring pre-load spacers, so it is possible to raise it up a little. 👍

Hi David, thanks for the info, great video! Is it possible to fit the Tomahawk body on the Ultima chassis, without the wing? I am in love with the Tomahawk's look but i would prefer the Ultima chassis and suspensions!
@KaiCityRC28 күн бұрын
The Tomahawk body would require a lot of cutting to fit onto the Ultima chassis. Problem areas include the narrow gap between the front shock towers and the Ultima's battery position is quite far forward compared to the Tomahawk. A stick pack installed would likely interfere with the body. The rear doesn't look to be too much of a problem, though you'd need to trim accordingly. A far easier (but more expensive) option would be to get the JJ Ultima, as it uses a Tomahawk body with (slightly) modified cut lines. It has basically the same transmission and suspension as the Ultima.
@Daigodai55527 күн бұрын
@KaiCityRC I see. I think I will get the JJ Ultima then. Thank you so much for the detailed answer!

Sadly, that hasn't been the case. One of those KZbin mysteries I guess. 🤷♂️

I had the original thundershot in the 80's . Before i ever got it for my birthday, i had plans to change the mono shock to standard dual shocks. I had this planned just from seeing the pictures in magazines and seeing the 2 shock mounts up front . I used my big wig shocks , then later swapped then with kyoshos. My advice to anyone is to buy the cheaper model and use that money you save to buy 4 shocks and motor . If you are crafty you can fabricate body mounts also. I chose a Subaru Brat body and finished it with 3 star proline wheels . Its a good platform to experiment with and mod for a beginner.

Gil Losi Jr.’s 1985 YZ-834b came with a stock aluminum chassis. He later upgraded it with a graphite chassis. The re-release comes with a Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) chassis. That begs the question - if you get the re-release, do you really have a world champion car? Or is it only a world champion car if you upgrade the chassis to the graphite plate?

I don't get why this buggy has so much hype. The chassis is very simple and coarse, it looks like some 3D printed DIY project (especially that rectangular gear box and the pan plate). It does not carry the vintage mechanical sophistication seen in highend Tamiya or Kyosho buggies but it costs the same.
