Remaking horror is a venerable tradition so I don’t want to reflexively wag my finger at games doing it, but the best examples in film are all wildly divergent from the originals. If Bloober had made everyone really mad by doing something ‘disrespectful’ to the original by making bold choices in weird directions, it would be a valid work for me.
@udopadrik99715 күн бұрын
I can sort of get behind aspects of what you are saying, but to call the remake worthless? While I agree on the remake not being a mess like the original was, I'd go quite far in the opposite direction on it having worth. A tribute and the attempt at remaking a work of art I would argue is much more valuable than the vast majority of "new" games that are out there that are not based on ideas that have much artistic worth. It is valuable in many ways, but for example as an attempt at understanding the mechanics and aspects of a work of art, aspects that made it tick and seeing if the ideas could be expanded on, reinterpreted in different contexts. I would say, them pulling it of in as many ways as they have is aching to them having succeeded in creating a masterpiece themselves. I see remakes much more as cover songs. Does Johnny Cash singing "Hurt" erase the Nine Inch Nails original? No, and by giving an interpretation of the song from a new perspective I think the creators of the cover song perhaps succeeded in creating a new piece of art and an intriguing reflection of the original. I'd say Silent Hill 2 remake succeeds in much the same way. Not every interpretation of a piece of art that was "a mess" has to be "a mess" itself. It can be a piece of art of a different kind. Is it impossible for a symphonic orchestra version of a punk rock song to have worth or to have artistic merit if it lacks the aspect of "being a mess"? Attributing something like that "no worth" seems close to typical KZbin "outrage-baiting". You claim you didn't like the prospect of "being truthful about this game", but let's be honest, claiming something has no worth is very much a clickbait maneuver and seems slightly less than "an honest opinion", and outrageous opinions are what do tend to get clicks and make the video creators money. I'm guessing you are pushing this purposefully to a hyperbole and put in special effort not to notice A LOT of the ways it could be seen having worth, BECAUSE you see personal benefit in seeing less worth in the remake and making a video claiming that.
@nickd70365 күн бұрын

@udopadrik99714 күн бұрын
And I disagree. I consider the original to be a piece of art and and considered as such, but any claim that "only originals have worth" usually indicate that a person has close to zero respect for how art has its origin in repetition and oral storytelling in which stories are endlessly told and retold, art pieces are made, remade, reinterpreted, etc, and sometimes new artistic value is achieved, sometimes not. That is basically the history of all art, but somehow modern people in some commercial framework have gotten delusional about how there can be only one "true" version of a story, and all else is "meaningless". I'm just saying its a subjective claim with not much backing it up, and a probable reason to attribute "no value" to something is to get outrage clicks. Not the only reason obviously, but still quite a probable one.
@udopadrik99714 күн бұрын
That remakes are considered as a replacement of the original in video games is a sure sign video games as a medium is immature still. In art forms with some real history, like theater, literature, painting and music remakes tend not to be seen as a replacement, but a compliment, a reinterpretation, a separate entity with its own possibility of being seen as art, but in video games it's all about the cult of technological progress and how newer versions are the replacement of older versions. I'd call it immaturity. If video games evolve some more into an actual art form, perhaps people develop the capacity to see both originals and new versions to have worth and with no need for one to "replace the other".

Also, the character actors in the remake absolutely still have weird, Lynchian tones in their conversation. And yes, I've played ALL of the original SH games on their original hardware on PS1 and PS2. Plenty of people picked apart SH2 back then too. Perspective changes and evolves over time. Just as your perspective on the remake might change 10 years from now. I've played SH2 fanatically, it's one of my all time favorites, but we should give credit where credit is due. The remake is fantastic and honors the original without "forcefully" replacing it.

People are looking at SH2 the original with rose-tinted glasses. I have never enjoyed playing the OG. It's bad, game-wise. The tank controls are frustrated as a game...and that's how I first and foremost judge Silent Hill. It's a video game. A lot of OG fans seems to forget this or forgive it because it has such an amazing story. What I like about SH2 the original are all the youtube videos and forum chats discussing the story and symbolism. The remake is not a waste of time, because I actually enjoy playing it. The padding is only bad on the first playthrough...once you get good at the game and know where everything is, it's not that bad. Maybe 10-15 hours to beat. The bosses are MUCH more fun the original. I don't understand how this is a "waste of time". I'm glad the remake exists and I look forward to further remakes of old SH games. I'm glad they got rid of those awful tank controls. People who defend it as adding part of the horrifying experience are just coping that Team Silent didn't know how to make good video games...they were very good with art direction and storytelling (and killer music). Videos like this frustrate me. Modern games get too much hate. Old games are fun to talk about, but sometimes boring to play. Also, one final point, the remake helps me understand the story better. The original left too much for interpretation.

While I agree with a lot of the things you've said, but I can't help but feel it's incredibly cynical. The most important thing the Silent Hill 2 remake does *is* be accessible to a modern audience. People can't engage with a past they don't know exists, and Silent Hill hasn't been a household name for more than a decade. Sure, the remake sands the edges off, sure the gameplay is safe and generic, but it also means people that weren't interested will now play the game. Those people, if they enjoy it, will further engage with and do research and play more of these games. You shouldn't think of this as a remake, but rather a lowered barrier to entry for the average person to engage with the concepts presented. Frankly, that's how I feel about most remakes. If you see everything as a cynical cash grab, your entire life will be miserable.

You can't just force people to finish or play the og bro and i'm gonna go even further than that you can't force people to finish sh2 og or remake. I personnaly played sh2 og like 6 years ago, 1 year ago and again once more 4 days ago to compare with the remake since i really liked it, and i really dont get what the fuss is about. I played crappy remakes before who cut a lot of content from of games (like re3r for example) and this really was not it, not only did it stay as faithful as a remake can be to the og but it also kinda made me wanna Replay thé og like i said to compare (especially when it did the little homage to the og with the aura's of the past collectibles revisiting past locations) and let's be honest bro, there are a ton of things that the og does better (let's not forget that even thought 50% of sh2 greatness is it's Story the other 50% should also be it's gameplay, this isn't a visual Nobel but a survival horror which emplies that it is a video game which therefore means that gameplay should be the rest 50%) for example the combat which IS much more dynamic and violent than og, ennemies behaviour and ai (who surprised me by often jumpscaring me when i least expected it), actual tension throught 3rd person view (even thought the static camera view from the og are something i cherish (mainly bc of nostalgia) being able to see the entire environnement from the perspective of James really adds to the immersion in the game, the boss fights (the remake literally improved boss fights bro there is no denying that without actual arguments) especially abstract daddy and Eddie, the only things that i found were better in the og are maria's appearence (especially behind bars in her cell in the labyrinth)and the voice acting of Mary when she's reading the letter she gave to James at the very end of the game. The remake also adds 2 New endings (which i believe are faithfull to the essence of the og) on top of a revisited ost (this is mostly up to preference since og's ost is already great) and a New ennemy type that works very well and IS also faithfull the og (representing again James sexual desires and frustration) so worry for that Big ass Replay and comparaison but that was just to show you my arguments as to why i believe the remake is better in my opinion (you're free to dislike it bro everyone has their own preference) at the end of the day video games deserve to evolve and not stay in the same state forever, i imagine in the future with the developpment of vr why not a port of it for sh2 or an FPS mode update like GTA 5 did with ps4(similar to kojima's pt) to add even more immersion. On the final note i believe that this game deserved a remake and that bloober team delivered a really respectfull and faithfull remake (collab with team silent also giving them their own credits at the end, something most remakes don't even do). I believe that at this point people who hâte the remake do so because they wanted it to fail so badly that they have a cognitive dissonance and just blindly hate it without real arguments besides : it's not team silent/it's not the og. I believe this is very reductive criticism and not fair at all because you have to give credit where credit is due.

When it wanted to get serious, it did. Monica Taylor Horgan performance as Mary/Maria is the best example of a great performance and it's criminal how much Remake did not even try to capture the essence of her performance as Mary and Maria. People were sobbing like crazy, devastated by the Mary's letter read at the end of the original game. None of the people that I saw playing the remake were crying at the letter read at the end, not a single tear drop. I must also say that people dedicated so much time to bashing changed character appearances, (I agree that Maria is slaying less, stuff about Angela is just pure misogynistic hate train spread by anti-woke dumbos) but no one really talked about how James turned from an average looking guy that looks slightly off, into a sexed up, buffed, your average Hollywood protagonist. He's so good looking to the point that people were legit comparing him to Leon Kennedy in terms of looks, and days after the release you could already download high-quality nsfw mods for James and no other character, which was most surprising to see, because you would think that hetero gooners would be faster. His performance is good, but this whole sad, tough guy, alcoholic, sad puppy eyes spell wears off very fast, compared to the unexpectedness of the original performance (and Cihi had some good moments there tbf)

It was not trying to be shocking or provocative for the sake of it rather it was trying to bring to the surface the subconscious desires within everyone and explore these topics.

its really frustrating people take "you havent played this game if youve played the remake" as an inherently elitist stance when in the context of a game like sh2, the remake is so mechanically transformative it's absolutely the case. it's not a statement that i make at least with any pretension or to be mean about it - i really enjoyed re2make but i know the original is absolutely a significantly different experience and even having not played it (much) would never claim that my experience with 2make makes the need to preserve and play the original irrelevant. the waters get muddied because remake/remaster/re-release are all ill-defined terms in games, for example the demons souls remake being near 1-1 a mechanical recreation of the game but completely overhauling every inch of the art assets. id argue even that is still transformative enough to make it a wholly different experience but it's what makes it a case by case basis in general. plenty of "remasters" only fuck with the graphics and even when the changes are "good" you're still getting something that can really impact how the experience is presented to you - even changes as simple as removing the heavy yellow tinting in re-releases of deus ex human revolution. i think its important to highlight this aspect so much because otherwise people will just look at remakes like sh2 as the "only" way to play this game, and right now we're in a situation where that original title isn't commercially available whatsoever. it's great there's other ways out there still but its inherently a barrier to access for some and i think only makes it easier for there to be this divide to begin with. i think its one thing for players today to not have played a 20 year old title no matter how much of a classic it is, but im kind of surprised so many professional reviewers have gone into the new game without even playing the old one because again, so much of what makes those original sh games legendary is the games themselves.

It's good as a vector to get young people to play the old games. So in that regard it is good that it exists.
