i realized recently that for me feelings of nostalgia correlate with how bad my depression is. i kinda feel like it ties into lost futures too, like if i can just pretend i'm back in [whenever] then i can still hope that there's an alternate timeline where today is Cool instead of Bad.

Usually post a memey comment on each of these vids but in all seriousness this series is getting better and better with each video. Also the first youtube vid in ages to make me instantly want to seek out a song (The one used in the final moments of this vid).

This whole series was super well done! Lots of stuff to think about and a really good aesthetic to boot (really hit the "emotionless corporate dystopia that's actually really janky in it's inner workings" feel on the head with the choice of colors, music, and the AI generated images.). I'd hope to see more people try to confront and talk about the current state of blind tech-driven corporate fanaticism that people have gotten so used to, so that maybe we can actually work towards something that's better for all of us.

This has been an exceptional series! It's so refreshing how you've approached all these issues without veering off into pointless culture war garbage. The production quality is insane, and it's clear that these videos are well researched. I've been a fan for a while now, but I just re-watched the whole series (feeling nostalgic I guess). So, I wanted to leave a comment to help the algorithm because your videos are basically the opposite of brainrot.

was it intentional to link closing the ouroboros with nostalgia to language models having already consumed all available human text, needing exponentially more while not improving commensurate with the hype... creating new text that those same companies have to treat as nuclear waste that could poison their language models

This was one of the most gratifying experiences on KZbin for me this year - the sad irony of generations willingly plunging themselves into illusions of stability and cultural prosperity, forced to repeat the same cycle of intense yet intrinsically empty emotions over and over. I waited until the last episode to recommend it, but the general vibe of this series can be felt in that work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can%27t_Get_You_Out_of_My_Head_(TV_series) - including the profound soundtrack work. Thank you Caleb for making me feel miserable - but disillusioned and maybe a bit freer.

This is so cynical lol. Going through time, there's like kind of like a 'wake' of uncool, where stuff is still fresh in the mind, but not modern enough to actually be fresh. After it passes through this dip, it's fair game again. But I think the anomaly in this whole thing is that wake, not the stuff in the past we're nostalgic about. We like stuff from the past because actually it's still good. It was good when it was invented and it never stopped being good really, it was just momentarily tainted by the uncoolness wake. I think the fact that we can enjoy and appreciate things from all time periods is a generally positive thing. It means we're actually looking at stuff for what it is rather than simply looking for whatever the latest thing is. I think as you get older, the tendency to always look for the latest thing starts to wear off and that's a good thing. As the pace of technology has increased and the amount of media available has expanded, that wake has shrunk in size. This is also a good thing too. Let's stop using the word nostalgia and start accepting that it's just not sneering at stuff that's not on the 'cutting edge' of creation.
