Thank you very much. Very useful to this new 13" SB owner. I was going to buy that DRO that you list but it is no longer available. Would you have a recommendation for another quality DRO suitable for a 13" SB?

I am in awe of your skill. How did you achieve that smooth finish on the cast parts? Abrasives? Filler (Bondo)? Did you use a primer? How many coats? Sprayed or brushed? Using scotchbrite for a brushed look was a good choice. The finish perfectly complements the paint color.

Beautiful results, very nice work! I'm just starting on a South Bend 13" restoration of my own, my machine is dirtier and rougher than yours to start - and covered in bright blue paint on top of the factory paint.

This is the finest South Bend restoration I've seen! Really love the depth you dove in on it and particularly like the care with which the repainting was done -- I especially like how it was done with light enough layers to see the detail of the sand-cast parts. I always like seeing where they left the castings raw vs where they machine and ground flat -- it came out beautifully! And especially thanks for all the links on the parts and paints! I just got a South Bend 9A and it's in pretty good mechanical shape so I was thinking "Ain't broke, don't fix it" but now I want to make it shine!
4 жыл бұрын
Blue Tang Thanks and I’m glad you enjoyed it. I thought the same thing as you when I got my South Bend and the fact that it only had 1 owner and was always lightly used with very little wear didn’t help the cause. However, I’m so glad I did. Not only did I really learn how the machine worked but also found so much chips and gunk inside the head stock and carriage even though the lathe looked in super good shape and very clean looking. I wanted to clean it up and make it look as nice as I could without making it look too finished. I could have polished all the hand wheels to a shine but opted to just use a scotch bright wheel to clean them up. I really ended up liking this look and have restored 4 other South Bends the exact same color and in the same process! I have to warn you. Once you do one you you’ll catch the restoration bug and want to do it again and again! Lol. -Adán

I came back to this video to recheck the oils and where they are used. The illness I deal with affects my memory big time. You and the basement guy explain things with clarity and I for one appreciate your videos. I was working on my first project, an aluminum protective cover for a GPS device on a single seat Helicopter. I was in the finishing stages when the rear Headstock bearing locked up at higher speeds. I can run it slower and longer but I need the higher RPMs to finish shaping the cone. I put some Motorkote in the rear Oil Git and it helped it stay running a little longer but there is no doubt I will have to replace it. I was going to suggest something to you and I don't know if it will work or not because I haven't installed a set of New Era Dials. I bought a set for my SB 13 but these are made for another brand, maybe a Logan, not sure. I know from watching Brad's install and modifications of the New Era Dials he had on a lathe that there was some binding because of the 2 lock screws. Could you make a new compound and cross feed screw and thread the crank handle ends to mate to the New Era Dial sleeve that the screws lock in. Thread it to match a the new threaded additions on the new parts. Then there should be no side to side movement and use the locking screws to lock it in place or even better a pin of some sort. I was going to put this set on mine but my lathe would need to look like yours so I'm going to sell my pair in the next few weeks after I complete the work needed on the spindle. Consider making a video on your shop and the tools and machinery you have, I might have asked you before but then I went back and deleted what I wrote because it sounded like I was a broken record. Thank you again for the great information on the lathe oils and how to use them.

Nice Scriber Adan, I liked all the details in creating it. I used a scribe in my profession almost daily. For example cutting lifting lugs for picking up air ducts on a boiler, maybe 2' tall and 4' long out of 1.5" steel plate. I laid out the dimension with a scribe including all of the radius edges. Used a circle cutter I made for that and the rest was free hand oxy/acetylene torch. It had to be precise or it wouldn't fit in the beams. Mine were the only ones that fit but when you think about it, doesn't matter if your working on a musical instrument or a lathe or milling machine or plain A36 steel, you try and do the best job you can so no one has to come behind you and fix a sloppy job because you were lazy. You do excellent work, and nice equipment in your shop.

Adan, I don't know how I missed this video, I guess for one I didn't know what a Enco Multifix Tool Holder was until you pointed it out to me and suggest ABom79's video which I enjoyed. I was asking about the quick change holder that had the 90* turn handle. You did a great job on this video and let me say also that you go out of your way to show the links. I have been looking for the Scotch Brite Pads for my 8" x 5/8" bench grinder. The 1/2" you have might work unless I can find the correct wheel for 5/8". Sharing the steps you went through is priceless and I can't imagine why anyone would do a thumbs down. I'd like to see what kind of video they would produce compared to yours. I bought a set of New Era Dials but they are for they are for another type lathe other than a South Bend but the guy I bought them from said It wouldn't be difficult to make the adapter needed to fit my 13" lathe. I hate putting all of this out for everyone to see so I'll stop here. Thanks again for the great video. Those Multifix Tool Holders are pricey, hope you got a great deal. That's something I'm going to keep my eyes open for. God Bless, enjoyed the music.

Thanks again Paul. Yeah the multifix tool post is a bit pricey but worth every penny trust me! I have had several sets of the tool post and have gotten it as cheap as $100 in a industrial auction and as much as $800 on an eBay auction. Also, their is a Chinese company who is now making them for a lot cheaper and they are a great quality tool. You can find it on eBay by search multi tool post. They are usually have some color blue on them. Good luck!

I ask about the enco tool post holder that was on your lathe in another video, what you have now looks much like the MyFord tool post holder, is that what it is? Do you enjoy using the New Era dials and did you have any issues putting them on your 13"? Was there any milling operations needed for adapters? They look great. Do you have any idea if you could find a set for sale what they might cost? I noticed a lot of folks ask questions about them. Too bad they aren't made today, I bet they would sell big time.

Your lathe is beautiful. Every detail looks perfect. The colors go well with it and sits it apart from the rest. George Bell also restored a SB 13" and he made a fantastic video series in the process. His turned out looking like yours, In New Condition. Thanks. How do you set up the turret multiple micro indexing carriage stop you have on your lathe?
5 жыл бұрын
Paul, the turret micro indexing is set up by screwing in each threaded rod to the desired length then you can just turn the knurled wheel to use which ever threaded rod you want. Thanks for the comment! Adán

Thanks for taking the time to explain, the micro carriage stop I have is only 1 adjustment at a time. I saw the one you have on a turret lathe set up. I hope you have enjoyed using your lathe, it's a one of a kind.

I just commented on the video you made on Oils to use and oiling the lathe, excellent video. I was going through your other videos and saw this one. My SB 13" x 72" is also a 3 step pulley, made in 1960. I noticed a ratcheting noise when you ran the carriage or cross feed back and forth, mine does the same thing except for about 6 inches of travel towards the tailstock. Do you know what causes this ratchet sound and it must be normal since mine is original and makes it and yours is brand new and makes the same sound. I hope you can help me with this. What did you use to degrease your 13"? I really enjoyed watching this video and I agree the music was great.
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it turns out that when I reassembled the apron to the carriage (with the 4 bolts) I should have closed the half nut before I tighten the apron to the carriage. This ensures that every thing is lined up before it is tighten up. I used Purple Power to degrease everything (you can get it at Walmart) and used oven cleaner to strip off all the old paint. Hope this helps. Adán

Yeah, the C oil is definitely what I'm flying through. I made a little tray that catches the oil under the gears and runs it down into a bottle for reuse as just general purpose shop oil. Someone with real fabrication abilities could do it with nice materials, and improve upon it's shape to make it run under the gear box as well. It could be a little money maker really.
