Except for some front bolts being a bit hard to access it was pretty easy, also put on the XR’s Only crank case vent tube with the little K&N filter pretty cool.

All the blinkers hitting the tank you could also fabricate a spacer approximately an 8th to a quarter of an inch to move the blinkers forward and they will also clear the tank

At first I used a generic inline automotive fuel filter. The problem was it was so big that the engine couldn’t pull enough fuel throw it. I guess because it was designed for a fuel pump and not a gravity feed system. I then switched to a generic motorcycle inline fuel filter from cycle gear. The kind that are $5 for 3 of them. Very cheap and low tech but it never let me down.

Addressing getting your signal lights to not hit your brand new factory screwed up never should have cleared QC before being recycled and having mounting recesses added to the saddle of the tank so you don't have to phone a friend to slide it over the backbone 5.8 gallon acerbis gas tank for your xrl. First off, scrap those old junk lights and get a pair of little pod style led lights instead. I think I paid just under 12 dollars for my whole set of 4 and they work so much better!! Smaller, brighter, obviously they look 100 times better, and the best part is, if all you do is swap all the old junk lights on an xr650l for new led lights your charging system will thank the shit out of you. Bike barely charges at 12.5 volts before, but it'll jump up to 13.9 bouncing off of 14 volts after. I know the 2 xrl's I've had did anyway. I replaced the headlight with led lights to and now it runs all my crap with no problem, it'll even fire over my air horn I have mounted under the front fender. (Yeah, you read that right, I have an air horn mounted under the front fender lol). Heated grips, heated seat pad, 3 different types of chargers for different things, 12 inch light bar that I have wired into my bright light switch so it only comes on when I hit the high beams, thats what all I can run at once now that I don't have them energy sapping factory lights on the bike anymore and with all that running at the same time it still charges at 13.2 volts at idle. Just for the sake of clarity tho, don't expect to just swap them out and its over because you'll still have to get a blinker module to go between the dash and the lights cause at first when you hook them up it'll blink like hazards and flash all 4 instead of just the left or right side when you hit your signal switch. Personally, I don't use one, I kinda like the hazard light action instead of left or right side flashing but thats just me. On my xr650l, lights have been the single best mod I've done mechanically and looks wise. 2nd would be a drop link for the rear. I lowered mine about 3 almost 4 inches in the rear and dropped my front an inch at the triple clamps and OMG!!! Awesome sauce!!! It was a really nice bike already, but that drop link made it a dream to ride and way more comfortable on your ass cause it gets the seat flatter and doesn't make you sit on an incline or like your ass is trying to scoot down a hill the whole ride. I've done quite a bit to my xr650l, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd focus on suspension first just because that link is a little costly, then I'd start on electrical and get that squared away before I spent a dime on anything else considering that 99 out of 100 ppl that ride ain't going to use 5.8 gallons of gas in a one day ever, this tank is really more for looks than it is anything else cause the average rider doesn't ride more than a few miles before stopping again. Hell, I ride every day just about and running 30 or so miles away is still torture on my ass lol.

Its really easy, and once the tank is stretched out it comes on and off pretty quickly. It's only hard the first time or two. One thing I would recommend considering is evaluating the path of the fuel hoses. I had trouble getting fuel from the right side because the hose wasn't running "down hill" sort of speak. The bike wouldn't suck all of the fuel out of the tank. Up until the day i sold my bike it still couldn't drain that side of the tank fully due to the distance and the fact my fuel line ran a little "up hill". It is a gravity system so just keep that in mind. Oh, also I use automotive in line fuel filters on it. The bike would only run until it ran out of the fuel in the line. After looking at it I found that the fuel filters I added were to big of a volume that would not get replenished fast enough for the bike (no fuel pump). So spend the money and buy motorcycle fuel filters the small ones.

I just realized why the video was upload in 480. This video is an edited video from moviemaker. when I saved the video it was not in HD format, rather in "for computer" option. So it did save it in the 480. I went back and checked some of my other saved videos, I did find one in 1080 (actually 960) after editing. I will try and upload it later today or tomorrow. You have to bear with me because I am no youtube wizard so there is a lot of trail and error. If you are on the fence about this camera, I can say that it's a good camera for the price. I think there are easier ones out there to use but not below $200. The camera that filmed this was their V99 version. Since then they have a V100, I had both but lost the V100 in the 2016 flood trying to film my house being swallowed alive. I can tell you the V100 fixed everything the V99 didn't have. For example the 1080P resolution, where the older model didn't have. I still haven't gotten the video off of the V100 yet maybe in a month or so and hopefully the water didn't damage the memory card.

@ScottEals
@ScottEals 8 жыл бұрын
you can upload straight to KZbin and facebook. However you have to convert the file first. This video was edited with Microsoft movie maker after conversion, I also followed youtube's instructions for megadata injection. With that being said, I uploaded quite a few videos (none public) as test. Edited, non-edited, conversion, injected, etc... and the only thing that seems to effect it is the conversion. So follow the instructions on the computer software and you will be okay.
@LenwoodBrownIII
@LenwoodBrownIII 8 жыл бұрын
Scott, when you talk about converting, are you just talking about converting the file type or the actual stitching part? The video I'm left with is a single frame with views from both lenses. I guess I'm trying to avoid breaking down the video into frames and then finding software to auto stitch each of them back together to make a video that I can then export as MP4 and upload to KZbin. Any help with software or process would be much appreciated. Thanks!
@ScottEals
@ScottEals 8 жыл бұрын
I was planning on doing a video about the entire process but I was a victim of the Louisiana 2016 flood and I am in the process of relocating. Also my camera got flooded so it will be a while before I am up and running again. You can download the free software for the camera here....www.symax360.com/.....you will see a "conversion" button. Once you do that it converts the file to a readable format so facebook and youtube can display it properly (no front/back bubbles). Now the actual stitching happens through youtube/facebook upload process. Most of the time I can simply upload the converted file however youtube sometimes doesn't display correctly. If this happens youtube has a megadata injection software (for free) you have to run the video through first, than upload it. You can find it on their help page. If you search for "uploading 360 videos to facebook/youtube" on google or on the facebook/youtube websites, it pulls up pretty quick. If you are editing the file. Make sure you do it before you run the conversion not after. ***I know this sounds like a lot but it only took me about 2 mins to convert/inject the file and upload, it's fast and simple once you do it. Don't get discouraged.
@LenwoodBrownIII

Thanks Scott. The missing piece was the conversion software which none of my packaging or documentation noted. I ended up downloading the Elecam conversion software which is really the same thing just rebranded and it all worked fine. Hey I need help! I've got a 2007 XR650L with: FMF Pipe, (Standard Jet Currently), FMF Needle with one setting down, Better Air filter, and removed snorkel. After removing smog kit and oil separator, my bike won't run on it's own cold. I've messed with the carb by swapping the jets and adjusting the needle over six times. I took it to two different motorcycle mechanics as well, which didn't get me much farther. Any Ideas? I shouldn't have to reinstall the smog kit right?
@ScottEals
@ScottEals 8 жыл бұрын
As long as everything is sealed up air tight you shouldn't need to. I might be possible that it's not sealed correctly and when the bike warms up and the jugs expand it makes the seal. Try adding some RVT and insure it's fully cured out before starting the bike. These bikes are cold blooded and are a bitch to get going in the morning. I had to start mine with full choke, let it run until it sounded like it would die and pull it down to 1/2 choke for a few min more until it would be okay. Some times even needed to keep the throttle on to keep it going until it warmed up. It is also hard to say with out hearing it or seeing what is happening. it could be choked out, not enough air, too much air, not enough fuel, too much fuel, valve adjustment, timing, etc... I know this is all general information but if it was working fine with the smog stuff on, than and it doesn't when you took it off. I would say re-install it and test it out and/or retrace your steps maybe there is a step that was skipped. I remember forgetting to do some stuff and had to go back and re-install. Also I didn't change anything in the carb. it was all OEM. I did remember the entire air box blowing out on me because I didn't tighten the clamp down and hand to do a repair in the lowes parking lot.
@zwade3722
@zwade3722 8 жыл бұрын
I used to be able to start the bike on full choke, then half, etc. You might be right with the air leak... Concerning the snorkel removal, when I punch the gas she wants to choke up on me. when I put it back, she sings fine. Could that be part of the charcoal system removal as well?
@ScottEals
@ScottEals 8 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it's getting flooded. When is the last time you rebuilt the carb? might be a sticking float/shut off valve (forgot what they are called). Or the needle isn't correct ether way it sounds like the carb is getting to much fuel than it can burn.

Also this video is for a review I am doing but haven't gotten done with that section yet. I got rid of my bike. I ended up have more and more kids and didn't have time for her anymore. I still got a cruiser but I am getting rid of that one as well. I am really down sizing. I wanted to invest in a more street worthy dual sport, like a Vstrom, BMW GS, or the like. I like the riding style I just didn't really go off road anymore, just commuting back and forth to work. Also fuel injection would be great, I have even thought about making a apocalyptic cafe racer. Do you have an idea why it's making it? do you think it can be the carburetor or by taking out this IMS baja will resolve it. You can see in my video title air explosion sound what I ment.
@ScottEals
@ScottEals 8 жыл бұрын
I saw your video. Explain what you are doing when the sound is made. It almost sounds like a compression break or it is choked out when you twist the throttle. However I can't tell what your hands and feet are doing.

Thank you for your answer and willing to help me. The sound it's made when starts to decelerate, the explosions sounds louder in motor higer evolutions. In the video I was going down on the hill. I'm not using the brakes or twisting the throttle. The bike only has 3000 miles.
@ScottEals
@ScottEals 8 жыл бұрын
From what you are telling me, it sounds like you are compression braking. Basically when you are going down hill, you are using the engine's compression and back pressure to slow the bike down. I heavy use compression breaking on trucks, bikes and cars. You will see big trucks or trucks with heavy loads using this technique when going down hills so they don't burn up the breaks. When I lived in Washington I regularly used compression braking, however no that I live in Louisiana where there are no hills I only use it for stopping quickly. Basically I will grab both breaks and drop a gear, if I feel the breaks aren't slowing me down enough I will let go of the clutch and the bike will almost come to a stand still. Try this.... Next time you are going down a hill, either pull in the clutch and cost down and/or shift into a higher gear. For example if in the video you are in 2nd gear not using the throttle or break, try up shifting to 3rd with out throttle or break. ***Keep in mind you will be going faster*** its all about how fast you are going, RPMs, and gear you are in that will give you that sound. So if you are now in 3rd gear going down the same hill but going faster you will notice that sound once you have reached that magic ratio of speed/RPM/gear. Hope that makes since, its a little hard to explain for me. In short what you are telling me and how I understand it, it is normal. Hope that helps and wish I could show you first hand. Let me know what the out come is.

phrankus2009 It was a fun project. I am an offshore diver, that black stuff is the same goop we use to water proof the electrical cables for our welding machines when we are doing underwater welding. Trust me it is very water proof, but it will cost you, its about $150 a pack. The point of this is to see if I could do it with spending little money, plug and play is boring in my opinion. You can buy kits online now, it's not a big deal to glue in some LED lights from AutoZone and hook them up to the relay. Just remember if you are running LEDs in the front and regular lights in the back you will have to add one of the boxes that I had to. My recommendation is to just stick with the OEM set up. It works, its reliable and it is durable.

William Jones I am getting around 170 miles before reserve in the summer with everyday riding (no long warm ups with the choke wide open). The engine won't suck the fuel from the reserve side to well. It's because you have to make the fuel lines travel "uphill" to get to the carb. So basically once you hit reserve your walking.

I have a 2007 and I'm replacing my smog kit right now. This video has really helped me out. I appreciate the help! BTW, when you replace your exhaust, you'll probably have to upgrade your jets as well. I don't know how she'll (my bike) react when I remove the smog kit, but when i put the exhaust on at first I could tell she was running way too lean and got larger jets. Maybe the removal of the smog kit makes the difference for the upgraded exhaust. I'll give you some feedback on that!
