Experienced this when I lived in Boston in the 1990s. Took the Orange line from Medford to the Airport a number of times, and the AC went off every time but the lights stayed on due to batteries during the switch. When I moved to Braintree and took the Red line to the Blue line the same thing happened. MIT designed the technology back when this was built for the reasons built in the video.

The train isn’t a minute late. It always leaves a minute late which means it’s on time they give people that minute to make each other the train.

While GCM station began construction in 2008 (and the tunnels on the Manhattan side dug between 2007 and 2011), the history of a LIRR link to Grand Central goes much further than that! There were plans for something like it as far back as the 1950s, and a new LIRR East Side terminal was first proposed in 1963. However, the reason East Side Access wasn't built back then was lack of funds, so the only thing that got built for it was the space on the 63rd Street Tunnel which was completed in 1989 and also carries F trains, with a station on Roosevelt Island being one of the deepest in the NYC Subway system at 100 feet/30 m. Plans for the LIRR connection were revived in the late 1990s, and the project received federal funding in 2006! Something to note is that LIRR diesel trains cannot serve Grand Central Madison as the DM30AC locomotives (the ones that are dual-mode that can enter Penn; unlike the DE30ACs) and the C3 bi-levels cannot fit in the 63rd Street Tunnel due to their height, so someone wanting to go to a Montauk Branch station (or Oyster Bay or Port Jefferson Branch stations) would have to either go from Penn instead of Grand Central, or transfer at Jamaica.

A cool thing about the wayfinding at Grand Central Madison is that each street from 48th to 45th Street has its own artwork and a signature color, so it's a color-coded wayfinding system! For the colors, 48th Street is teal, 47th is purple, 46th is dark blue, and 45th is green (as shown at 3:02...thanks for the shoutout lol). Besides the ceiling portals/skylights (which yes, help regulate temperature too), these colors appear on the tiles of the hallways and sides of the escalators, and on the floor tile street numbers that appear on the concourse level and the mezzanine level of the station. The LIRR's M7s first entered service in 2002, while the MNR M7A entered service in 2004. Besides the LIRR M7s being black and yellow in the front, another difference between MNR M7As and LIRR M7s is that the MNR M7As uses under-running third rails (meaning its third-rail shoes collect the electricity from the bottom of the third-rail) inherited from the New York Central, while the LIRR uses over-running third rails because of it being a former Pennsylvania Railroad subsidiary. And yeah, not every seat on the M7s have power outlets, only the seats nearest the doors have them, however the M9s/M9As are a big improvement for power outlet availability as EVERY row of seats on BOTH sides of each car has power outlets! Unlike the M7s, the M9s are manufactured by Kawasaki!

I'd like to add regarding the Grand Central ceiling, that even though all the constellations are now where they should be, Orion is reversed! Although he’s placed in the correct location, the constellation itself is backwards! Which means that on the ceiling itself, which was projected backwards, he’s the only constellation whose stars are oriented correctly! The tracks between Grand Central and Harlem-125th Street were built under Park Ave, but the underground section wasn't always underground nor was Harlem-125th Street always on an elevated viaduct, and the reason Park Ave is called Park Ave has to do with the tracks! When the New York and Harlem Railroad built its tracks there in the 1830s (the New York and Harlem Railroad built the first streetcar in the US), the ROW was actually at GROUND-level, forcing foot and carriage traffic onto either side of the tracks! When it was realized in such a crowded place like Manhattan, this was a terrible solution, the railroad was then run through an open cut tunnel, which was then covered with grates and grass between 34th and 40th Street in the early 1850s, thus Park Ave! This tunnel between 34th and 40th was later used exclusively by streetcars in 1871 but is now just a car tunnel. The Harlem Railroad was later incorporated into the New York Central Railroad, and Grand Central opened in 1871, and because of all the grade crossings between Grand Central and Harlem like in East Midtown, they chose to put the trains in both a tunnel and an elevated viaduct in the 1870s. For Harlem-125th Street, the original station on ground level opened in 1844, was replaced in 1874 with one on the viaduct, but then it was rebuilt again in the 1890s, with a design by Morgan O'Brien, New York Central and Hudson River Railroad principal architect.

What's the deal with the tiresome 'No Filming' policy? I mean, actual film crews cluttering up the place, yeah I can 'get' that, and, I suppose like pretty much all municipalities and utilities its a $$ thing (as in, 'Gimme, Gimme!'), but I can hardly see the problem with a tourist or transit enthusiast, or someone with a modest KZbin or TikTok channel discreetly (but openly) filming. When I lived in London there was a similar thing with a ban on flash photography in/on the Underground. (This was long before camera phones were a thing). There the reason, as I understand, was safety, which given the amount of electrical arcing from the rails seemed pretty dubious... I'm gonna guess that PATH would say it's either or both of two things, each depressing; either Terrorism, which, of course, is the perfect "Stop asking questions, already" answer, along the lines of "Won't someone _please_ think of the *children!* " If that really _is_ the reason, I hardly think it would hamper any but the laziest or most gormless of terrorists, but boy does it ever put over vibes of those old Sov~Bloc countries where you risked causing an international incident if you took an ill~advised pictures of an airport or something. I mean, _Hello!_ "Leader of the Free World!", and all that?! Besides, if things really _have_ come to that, what even is the point..? What happened to all that "We can't let the terrorists stop us from living our lives" guff..?! The only other plausible one I can envision is the dreary old "legal/privacy/'FOIA' " routine; I mean, I know it's not the public street, up on the surface, but surely there's no reasonable expectation of privacy on the PATH? And there must be a gajillion channels out there making fun of unfortunate schmucks in WalMart, with their pants hanging half way down their bottoms - if privacy _is_ the reason, it's a pretty bogus one! [EDIT: Plus, you can be _damn_ sure PATH are filming *YOU!* ] Anyway, if we can't let the terrorists dictate the way we live, I say, the same should go for the suits! At the end of the day though, for all that I'm ranting, I can only speculate - if anyone knows, or can confirm, the actual reason, _I_ would sure love to hear it!
