It was promoted by William Hannah in Scotland, a prolific recording artiste in 20s and 30s and later and someone who Jimmy Shand was influenced by. I sold this box to Luke Daniels quite a few years ago, search on KZbin for Luke Daniels Leezie Lindsay and you'll see him playing it, he did a wonderful tribute CD to Will Hannah

Thanks for your interest, I recorded myself playing the Shand Morino with the midi bass, which is what we use mainly at dances nowadays as there's not enough money to pay a keyboard player except at the bigger dances, simply put, the midi enbles me to play the stradella bass as normal and through the electrical contacts added into the bass end of the accordion the bass and piano sound is generated from a sound module or expander, this is programmable to get any sounds you want really but I tend to go for the traditional bass and piano, I then played the recording back and played the melodeon along with it, that's the easiest part for me as I learnt to play by playing along with Jimmy Shand's records, hope that explains.

Hello and thanks for getting back to me about the Shand Morino being a glorified Melodeon. That explains things a lot. So the C row combined with the C sharp row makes it more or less chromatic? So I am guessing that Jimmy Shand was not happy with the melodeon restricted bass and got Hohner to fit a 120 Stradella bass system? This makes good sense. I would like to play the Old St Pauls waltz on my Corso but Its impossible. ( Unless you know different). I think the Corso would be just wonderful with a 48 bass six row stradella bass system. Pity there is no Corona with three reeds like the corso and tuned BC Csharp with that bass system I have described. I am newly into accordion/ melodeon repair and the challenge of making such a box inspires me because.. Cannot afford a Shand Morino I like the small Corso/ corona size. What do you think? Please play some Jimmy Shand stuff on your Corso. I love the Corso. Thanks Pete
@MELODEONMAN52
@MELODEONMAN52 Жыл бұрын
The British Chromatic system as played in Scotland is basically a C single row melodeon with B outer row and C# inner row added on, each row of course is a semitone higher. Yes, in Scotland we play across the rows rather than just up and down and that enables us to play in any key. The English players as I understand have quint boxes so 5 semitones between rows and would appear to be generally D/G on 2 rows and they play up and down the rows as opposed to across like we do, funnily enough, the Swiss Swyzcherorgeli boxes are quint boxes on the outer and middle rows and inner row is other random notes to help you play across the rows as the Swiss play across the 2 quint rows quite easily for runs of notes, there's a video on my channel of me playing one of these boxes. There were 2 and 3 row boxes in Scotland with stradella bass on them long before the Shand Morino came into being, Jimmy Shand played a 3 row Hohner L'Organola with 80 bass in the 30s and before that a L'Organola 2 row with 36 bass

@@MELODEONMAN52 Thank you so much for explaining that. I had always wondering how the button system worked and playing across the buttons to go up and down makes a lot of sense.

Beautifully played and just how Jimmy played it. I cannot tell the difference. I am confused with the Shand Morino Accordion. Is is essentially a melodeon with 120 Stradella bass? I understand its BCC sharp# so is it diatonic or fully chromatic? Does it play the same note in push pull! If so it would be hard to master after playing a melodeon? I have a Corso. I just miss the bass chords and impossible to play the old St Pauls Waltz because if the limited bass.. Sorry for the long transcript.

It is a glorified melodeon with stradella bass, 2 notes on each button, sook and blaw, just the norm in Scotland for many decades thanks to Jimmy Shand developing improvements in the 30s

Sorry, should've replied earlier, thank you. Yes it is a Corso and the box I'm playing is a Hohner Shand Morino as Sir Jimmy Shand had a hand in the design of them in the late 30s though production didn't start until early 50s due to the war. They are superb accordions and still as good as when they were made, just top quality, thanks for your interest

lovely playing but it is not a melodeon. It is fully chromatic, melody side restricted only by the number of buttons, so capable of any key. A true melodeon is a diatonic instrument, the same in appearance with either one or two rows of keys not set in semitones, but often in G and C, D & G & hence restricted in range of material played but suoperior in rhythm- this is excellent BC playing though!

Did 3 gigs in civil service club FIlton (still there). Always played a 5 row Morino chromatic. A lovely, but v heavy box. Now retired from band during Covid, and now play a Roland digital. Light and versatile, but it,s not a Morino. Thanks so much for the music. Reds Frank in Filton.

"The Scottish Horse" was played by Shand in the Jig selection "The Express"(intro; the Ferry) and brought out on LP plus 2 EP's from this item. The last Shand PMC LP's WERE already stereo(Step We Gaily and Oer The Border,Jimmy's Fancy,Awa'fra'Hame),although first brought out under"MONO".Later only under PCS. Thus,cos people were " wary"to buy stereo items,in fear of having not the right equipment to play them safely.The same was true of the recordings of the Beatles. Must tell you,Ian...my first "stereo LP" of Shand was the" Gateway To the Forth",in stereo as stated.Have played this item hundreds of times on my old equipment.And later on my modern record player,...well...what do you think?...Right! Item didn't prove to be damaged! Commercial tricks!!! Not here,but I'd like to come back to you for info about some 6/8s,played in the50s/60s and later never again.I know about your fabulous knowledge about older stuff,and I even once heard it play by YOU!!
