I can understand why you have used Whiskybase numbers for reference, but am a bit confused with a couple: WB N°4481 does not bring up an Islay, so I think you may have meant 4181, and WB N°133578 comes up as Yoichi Woody & Vanillic, not a French whisky at all... (maybe 135578?). Good choices (and explanations) though!

Hi Andrew & thank you very much for your vigilance ! Indeed there are 2 mistakes you've seen & not me, sorry : Instead of 4481 it is 4181, and instead of 133578, it is rather 209271...the problem of having 2 lists to copy & paste & mix things a bit too. Some surprising and very interesting choices there Greg! still need to really get to know Lindores, as I've only tried samples. That PC 16 seems absolutely delicious, but so do the others (that Glenallachie 😋) and i think we can't sing the praise of Armorik 15 enough, illustrated by the fact that I had it already on the table as I picked it independently from you too. Great fun to watch Greg!

Sorry to burden a long video with a long comment! I always struggle with the rules for these lists (trying to pick NAS ones was the worst!). With the Permashelf Pour: I've only bought 'the same' (allowing for batch variation) bottle more than once in 11 cases and only Laphroaig 10 more than three times, so I suppose it has to be that. In my experience, there is no such thing as a Crowd Pleaser that everyone will like: I once took a bottle of Tantallan (mystery Highland/Speyside?) and a bottle of Laphroaig to a party and almost half the room preferred one and almost half preferred the other and there were a few people that didn't like either! Although I mostly drink with other Scotch drinkers, I am also a member of the British Bourbon Society and think I am one of the few to like both. If pressed I'll go Tullibardine Sovereign or 1792 Bottled-in-Bond. Maybe Woodford Reserve to split the difference? For the Decadent Pour, I could choose my birthday drams: Highland Park - The Dragon 1961 and Ledaig 42 year old Dùsgadh, though either of those could fit the next category instead. Or I could take things down a notch or two and go for Clynelish 18 TWE Retro Label. But having so many whiskies to choose from, decadent could be different every day for a year! The V.I.P. Pour depends very much on who that is: bourbon drinkers have been impressed by A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974 16 year old, for instance, but I've also enabled at least three people to have a 40 year old whisky on their 40th birthday and pouring something from people's birth year can be quite impressive too! Or from a closed distillery (or several). (Oh, I now have at least one bottle each from 135 different Scotch malt distilleries, including 17 closed ones, most of which don't even exist to be revived.) The Attention Grabber is actually somewhat easier: my attention was certainly grabbed by the Diageo Special Release Port Dundas 20 year old from 2011 (I won't give my actual quotation of the time, as expletives were involved!) and that has been the case for others I've supplied it to as well. If rarity is a bar to inclusion, I'll often say Octomore x.3 instead.

Oh no Andrew that's great !!! 👌Interesting choices & questions....Laphie 10 from the 70s/80s are killers but too expensive (not a fan of current ones, and would prefer the Quarter cask every day, but its me). Haven't tried the Tantallan...Yeah Bourbon options for Crowd pleasers are a good call...Wow you're older than me, lol...Haven't tried those 2 x 1961 but I'm raving bout them, especially the Ledaig which I heard of (& stunning packaging too). For the VIP pour I agree it has to be adapted to the guest...(I have a list of vintages in my collection that i like to browse in when I have guests, but of course can"t have em all). Your choice sounds great & rare...Great collection you have (you beat me on both criterias lol-btw, it's so cool to hear that Dallas Dhu is going to be revived). Great comparison Greg! The Campbeltown 1832 was the first Glenscotia I bought and really enojyed it. Campbeltown Harbour is ok as a simple daily sipper I think. I absolutely fell in love with the Double Cask when it first came out and drank it passionately but these day it feels a bit off to me. I won the Double Cask Rum Cask finish at a competition and I'm liking it more and more everyday. Have you tried it before? Hi Sertug & thanks for your comment...For the record & I mentioned it during the live but yeah indeed on my side this was rather an "educational" tasting rather than a classic "blind challenge", as I knew he couldn't try them elsehow...But, and it is a spoiler, we planned with Menno to do a "return match" soon, and this time I'll choose only whiskies from distilleries or companies he knows...About the Biersky, I'm impressed indeed & this distillery (distillerie Bertrand) does great things since 1874 spirits wise, and whisky since 2003 (a big video is coming, btw, with 3 of their single malts & 2 versions of the Biersky, the other being a cask strength rum cask one !). Artesia wise (T.O.S. Distillery) I talked a lot about it in my channel & I do recommend all the ones I tried (I have 4 different ones now). Belgian whisky wise, Menno will evoke them way better than me but I do have some Belgian Owl & tried others too, so rather recommend that single malt, in the wait of other brands to be available here...Yeah the Port Ellen was a treat also chosen for his vintage, Menno's one...Nomad wise, I had the opportunity to try a lot of Dalmore, Jura, Fettercairn & Whyte and MacKay over the years & met Richard a couple of times in shows...Besides congrats for your 7/10 on the quiz, it's a good score (& if memory serves Roy told me in private he also scored 7). Hi Benny, well, it is getting less & less free, mind you, but I don't wanna talk politics here, it'll be worse....To go back to whisky reviews, not sure I was clear enough in the video but what i meant mainly is that while criticism is tolerated, overt call for boycott is less (I finally dropped the political example that was the more obvious lately here, because the topic is too sensitive), it also depends of your fame & the mediums you use...I'm a small channel, but if I was a big one & did a call for boycott for this or that product/distillery & also promote it everywhere & several times, there is a significant possibility the producer could legitimately complain of a campaign of boycott able to make him lose both money & reputation, then it is down to advocates & courts action...In some cases the complainant was dismissed, in others justice said he was right...Cheers & yeah yesterday and today were terrible, no whisky tasting or video until it gets more bearable....

@maltymissionАй бұрын
I think one of the reasons we don't often see negative reviews, regardless of any possible regulations, is indeed the fact that we tend to be quite critical before even purchasing a bottle of whisky. So we'll have done our homework before even buying a bottle. And if there is a bottle that's not delivering, I think most of us will go out and say as much. it's like you say Greg: you can't trashtalk a whisky if you don't back it up with some arguments. As long as you're honest and truthful and emphasize it's a personal opinion, any sensible person will understand. Then let the viewers decide where the value (and truth) lies. A difficult topic to tackle, but you handled this well, bravo!

Thanks a lot, Menno, and great point I forgot to mention about "preselection" to avoid disappointment (even if it is far from a "perfect science"), and, btw, like I said on Instagram, great today's post about Grappa & that Nonino in particular, I send the link to Cristina Nonino, hoping she'll have a look at it, so "Salute" instead of "Cheers", is then de rigueur, right ? 🍹
@hordeum-vulgareАй бұрын
If a whisky is disappointing for interesting reasons, then a negative review has merit. Except for the French laws, maybe. Similarly in Australia, a business can sue someone for defamatory comments. There are defences, such as truth, but it is costly to defend. But then, ‘Quid est veritas’ in whisky appreciation?
@GregsWhiskyGuideАй бұрын
Hi, well, if I have to do a negative review of something people are curious of, I will still do it, but, like i said, I'll have to be cautious. That said, a channel with millions of viewers might more be the target for censorship from brands than my modest one, and, as you said, tasting is subjective & down to each one's color & taste. That said N°2 obvious flaws (like a corked whisky) is for me hard to contest (i've experienced that for some whiskies & experts were agreeing with me each time). Cheers & thanks for watching !

Just so you know: Lidl (founded in 1932) and Aldi (founded in 1946) are competing supermarket groups that both originated in Germany (complicated by the fact that Aldi split into Nord and Süd divisions in 1966, when the founding brothers disagreed, and that Lidl started copying how Aldi ran in 1973...). Now all three companies have thousands of branches (12,271 versus 13,419) in multiple countries (31 for Lidl, 18 for Aldi) including the U.K. and U.S.A. (where Süd also runs Winn-Dixie and Harvery's and Nord runs Trader Joe's). We have both here in Croydon, but Lidl is much easier for me to get to than Aldi, so I haven't shopped in the latter... I do have a bottle of the Queen Margot 8-year-old that got the misleading headlines as "best whisky in the world" three months before the competition was judged - it cost me £13.49/~€16! They are not allowed to sell it for that price in Scotland, as they have a minimum price per unit of alcohol now.

Thanks Sertug, no problem as "color & tastes vary" (i mean it is very personal, we can't all love the same things always). Armorik brand wise, they have several styles within the distillery house style, which has also changed over the years, so maybe the most Scottish of them (represented nowadays by the 10 yo & the 15 yo as well, even if less "crowd pleaser" & more "connoisseur pleaser"), but the thing is that there are so many different styles of French whisky (like I said in the videos more than I everf experienced in 25 years) that I guess "everyone can find the right shoe for them", the problem being mostly availability & sometimes price, but more & more brands can be found now especially in some UK's on line shops (TWE, MoM, etc). Cheers ! / Besides a question, I recently found by chance & bought (so future reviews to do for me !) 2 Armenian single malt whiskies & heard of Turkey's Ankara whisky, but are they other distilleries making whisky in Turkey nowadays ?
@thewhiskyenthusiastАй бұрын
@@GregsWhiskyGuide Yes Greg there was an Ankara whisky but not anymore. This is a sore subject for us whisky loving Turks as Ankara whisky was formed in 1964! Unfortunately when the new (current) government came to power, they sold the distillery and the rights of any state owned alcohol producing brand to Diageo, who stripped the distillery and ceased production. It was never an amazing whisky but if it survived it would've been one of the oldest distilleries in the new world with potential 30 40 year old releases! The custom made copper pot stills are now at the Virginia Distillery making American Single Malt and what remaining unopened bottles there are, are selling for ridiculous prices.

Thanks, David...Good question...I don't know enough your standards & pressure, and also profile desires regarding your whisky collection, it is very personal, but I'll say this, this is a very good whisky, but if you want to get you only one distinctive Japanese whisky, and you like moderate peat, I'll suggest rather to get the Yoichi nas (my favorite distillery after Port Ellen and before Springbank, which speaks volumes), or, wait for the new Miyagikyo 10 yo or 12 yo to come back in the core range, but I'm afraid it is not going to be cheap....Let me know your choice anyway...

@GregsWhiskyGuide2 ай бұрын

Sorry to be a pedant, Greg, but you seem to have left an "i" out of the middle of InchDairnie. Oh, and while I'm at it: "Orchard House" has a "tsh" sound for the "ch", not like "ck"; "citrus" has a short "i", just like French "citron"?; "vanilla" would only have a "y" after the "ll" in Spanish... I was able to try InchDairnie's RyeLaw in the bar at Port of Leith Distillery and then wanted a bottle, but not at the shop price; luckily I got one much cheaper at auction not long after and I do enjoy it. I also have a 4-year-old Strathenry from The Whisky Barrel which is quite good. I got the Batch 001 of Strathearn, so I don't have FOMO about the Douglas Laing 'inaugural' (it may be their first, but there have been at least 4 previous releases!). I have a Le Breuil Whisky de Normandie Finition Sherry Oloroso, which I rather like. Not tried the Version Française, though. Same with G. Miclo Welche's Whisky Single Malt Tourbé, whereas my only Artesia so far IS the Version Française one! (And my least favourite of the three!) It is annoying that it is now easier for me to send things to Canada and New Zealand than France and Belgium (I voted to stay in the EU...) The only Brazilian whisky I have so far is a Union bottled by Cadenhead's (for which my notes read: "Big, Sweet & Rich, Almost jammy... A bit hefty"!). Good stream!

Hi Andrew, no problem & sorry for the multiples mistakes ! (InchDairnie, yeah been too quick on that one, I'll remember that !). Haven't tried the VF version of Artesia, maybe a too early release from them ? but the core range is now really solid imho...That Union seems interesting, Cheers !

Good job 👍

I just won a bottle that looks exactly like the last bottle you tasted. Cream label, with back. No box. I couldn't find a date printed anywhere on it. Is there any way to know when it was made?

Hi Greg! I like both the Nc'Nean and the Raasay core releases. When it get's to CS versions, due to Raasay not using STR I find them a bit more challenging than the softer, fruiter palate of Nc'Nean. The neck pour argument is valid but not the whole thing in my opinion. Yes the neck pour could be worse than the rest of the bottle but also like you've mentioned it could be better as well. Some whiskies evolve massively as they spend more time being open and I think we should give our opinions once we had a nice journey with them till half of the bottle maybe. Cheers Greg 🥃

Agreed, Sertug, and if it wasn't the pressure (often self-pressure, mind you) to release a video about a new whisky I bought or because I'm afraid my own storage/weather conditions might damage the content, so I might sometimes rush reviews maybe, I would always do so, and also it does depend on the whisky, not all react the same...Some whiskies for which the bottle is almost finished I wonder if it is worth reviewing them, especially when the experience is average, so I skipped some reviews of whiskies like that, but we'll see....Have nice day ! Cheers ! 🥃

Hi Greg, think that Ncnean and the Rassay are at around €60 here in Germany a bit too pricey for me,especially when I can get for a few €’s more for example Kilkerran 12. Still got a bottle and a half of the Ardbeg 10. Which I haven’t touched for quite a while. Lost a bit of interest in Ardbeg at the moment. I’ll catch your live on replay. The last few weeks have been pretty busy so I’m doing a lot of catching up. Slàinte Greg 🥃

I'm surprised you had to pay more for the Nc'nean than the Raasay: it's normally the other way round here (e.g. £46.90 for Nc'nean versus £52.70 for Isle of Raasay at House of Malt). Even ordering straight from the distillery (with shipping) and paying extra for the tube, my Nc'nean was only £54.95/~€64.22; including shipping Raasay would have been more. (As it happens, the only Raasays I've got are 'specials' - Makar's Malt and Scottish Whisky Distillery of the Year 2022 - so they were both, understandably, more expensive.) As far as changing opinions are concerned: I'm sure there have been numerous ones over the years, but the one that comes to mind recently is Lindores MCDXCIV - I was very disappointed initially, but am glad I gave it a second chance. I don't think the whisky changed at all, but my expectations did...

Thanks, Andrew ! Yeah French prices & margins especially are sometimes (or often ?) a scandal given the prices you indicate here...Thanks a lot for this price investigation...
