I turn 62 next week. I was holding on by a thread. 30 days ago, a high impact fall fractured and displaced my wrist. I've been on unpaid leave, submitting reems of documentation for a minor accommodation. I'm told I need surgery asap (more unpaid leave). If I invoke a penalty, I'd consider it an improvement. I haven't filed yet.

One big way that I disagree with Dave is with my mortgage. 3 1/2 years ago I borrowed $335,000 on a fixed 3% loan. It allows me to put 15% of my paycheck away and still have a life while my house is appreciating at 5-7% per year. Dave disagrees with this method and I disagree with Dave.

Wait a minute.... you're criticizing a dude that basically inspires folks to live below their means and doesn't require payment? You can certainly argue about the financial advice he gives once you actually have money to spend/invest. But his greatest strength is inspiring people to take that first and biggest step, and that is to be money ahead at the end of the month instead of money behind (usually due to frivolous purchases). He offers great advice to help make it happen.

I’m grateful to Ramsey for offering me a plan to get out of debt. I used his plan for 10 years, and could have done a debt-free scream on his show. The problem is, with the soaring costs of inflation, it’s become very difficult to remain debt-free. I keep cutting and cutting my expenses to remain so, and am at the lowest possible expenses I could possibly have while living in America. If this doesn’t work, I’m gonna have to leave the country. Mind you, I’m living without health and dental insurance, and I’m about to cancel auto insurance next year. So, am I making it? I can never have an emergency, even with an emergency fund, because just one emergency in America will bankrupt you. :(

I was surprised to hear Clark Howard included with the others. I consider him more a day-to-day consumer spending advisor -- credit card scams, where to get a good mattress deal, financing at the dentist, etc. I don't consider him a financial guru in the sense that I do the others. So I'm interested in what Mr. McKnight has to say about him.

Ramsey literally has multiple people doing shows that are broadcast on KZbin for free. His advice is free if you spend 3 seconds looking for it. Yes, of course you can do a deeper dive and buy a book or pay for a class if you need the reinforcement from other people. But if you have the willpower to do it yourself, it costs nothing.

I like Wade Pfau, Dana Anspach (Sensible Money), Safeguard Wealth Management, The Money Guy Show, Morning Star, Erin Talks Money, Ed Slott and some others. Dave Ramsey is good at getting you out of debt and going in the right direction. But my problem with Dave is that he has made his conversation into a business too much. Annuities can have a place, but sometimes they are too expensive. Clark Howard has 15 Million Net Worth per google search. DIYers need better "free tools" to help with the more advanced planning. 1% AUM fees turn the 4% rule into a 3% rule after you pay fees. To get that 1% back you've gotta DIY.

The Republicans have 2 years to give America what they voted for. If they come through, I expect their majority will grow. But Republicans have an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. So it's really going to be on the leadership to push Trump's agenda and make it work. Paul Ryan and Mitch Mcconnell were both anti-Trump and they dragged their feet on every agenda item, some didn't even get addressed. Now they are both gone. So we'll have to see if Mike Johnson and John Thune will be the leaders the Republicans need to get the job done for Trump and our fellow Americans. America can be great again if the government gets its house in order.

2 and 8 applied in 2008 when I was 59 and laid off in the Great recession. What I've learned is that I could structure my life to have a very comfortable retirement on just my social security and I have some investments as a backup should the need arise. I would not give back one day of the 7 years of early retirement that I was forced into for any amount of money. And while we're at it only this year did the breakeven curve for retirement at 65 cross the one for 62. I don't need more money now. Working longer will not extend your life a single day. Retiring early might very well give you years.

@billcarson1950Күн бұрын
I think videos like this leave off a reason for starting at age 62: if you’re financially extremely well off (say you don’t even need the SS), if you start at age 62, you’re spreading whatever you do get over more years and possibly having income taxed at a lower rate. If you wait until age 70, the income is packed into fewer years, meaning the tax rate is likely to be higher. Also, and this is an unknown, if you have significant wealth and wait, you might find that the government feels the pressure to reduce your benefits because you’re a dirty rat rich person. Or if not taking some or all of your benefits away, they could make 100% and not 80% subject to ordinary income taxation. Just gotta really think through on waiting until age 70. I’m 74 and glad to have started at age 62. Yeah, if I live to be 85, I might say that maybe I should have waited 3 years, but so what? It’s not that much money.
