I wonder if the family knew he was dead? whether he drowned or had an accident they took the body somewhere else and then claimed the other boy was their son? no one would ever look for a body if he had returned. If the child depending on how long he had been with the traveller would even remember at 4 who he was and that's how it ended. Could the phone call be a red herring? I doubt there was anything but the Parent's word that there was such a call. It strikes me as odd that it was the five youngest that vanished and the parents escaped with the oldest. If the roof and outside walls were still standing the fire wasn't enough to obliterate five bodies. In those days it would have been easy to send those kids to an orphanage. Birth records could be haphazard or changed. The fire could have been a cover up or a ploy for sympathy, especially at Christmas. Nine kids is a lot.

I grew up about a mile from where this tragedy took place . The billboard was there for years , which has since been taken down and it has been down for years now. There was one survivor of the sodder children. I did meet him and his wife. And I was a traveling nurse and there is a HIPAA law and you cannot speak of anything that any patient or family member has told you about any patient other than I did meet him he was the last surviving child of that family. This was back in the early 2000s. I don't know or I don't believe that him and his wife are still alive but if there were children which there was no mention of when I was going to that home for care to Mr Sodder, any of the events that happened but at the same time I could not divulge any information even if Mrs sodder could have told me the story . And no other family around I never met any other family members or any children so if they had had children and they were grown all I can say is love and prayers for this family and for Mr and Mrs Sodder . Rest in peace.

Who knows, George could have owed money,or angered someone badly.
