I was visiting a friend's family who lived 20 minutes from the prison when this breakout occurred. I knew that my parents would be worried sick about me so I called them in Perth, Western Australia. When my Mum answered the phone, I asked if she'd heard the news. She said yes, sounding so excited and told me how wonderful it was! She said even Bob Hawke (our Prime Minister) was having a drink. When I asked her what she was talking about, she said, "Australia's just won the America's Cup!" I didn't tell her about the breakout, knowing all news would be on the back burner for ages. 😁 It was an interesting time to be in Northern Ireland.
