Many, many years ago a woman by the name of Sherwood McGuigan owned this place. Every year she would invite us orphans to stay at the guest houses for two weeks each summer (One guest house was called "A Frame" and the one actually pictured was named "Nick's Place" after her draft horse Nick who used it as a barn before its conversion. I adored it because: it still smelled like sweet feed and alfalfa.) Sherwood would cook us dinner in the main house, she had so many curious things collected in there. Her staircase had vintage carousel horses making up the rails and banister. She let us use the paddle boats in the pond by the house. The stories around the fire in the kiva at night were unforgettable. She took us up the mountain at night to watch the elk, fish rainbow trout from the stock ponds and kayak. Her two Shetland sheep dogs, Ringo and Tucker would chase us around the yard. She would take us to white water raft he Animus River, she rode the Durango-Silverton coal train with us. Took us to the Hot Springs in Pagosa. You would of never known how rich she was: She wore her husband's old uniform shirts and ripped jeans, had a grey chilli bowl hair cut and wore bottlecap glasses. She smoked Marlborough Lights. I come back to watch this video every once in a while, to remind myself of these memories. Thank you, Sherwood. You placed the love of the outdoors and nature into my heart. You were kind to orphans, inviting them into your home. She treated us like family. She passed in 2012, and I believe this property went up for sale two years after her death. If only I had the means to purchase it.

Hello, Pannel Can be installed horizontaly or verticaly ? Is this important ?

Good idea on the fins. If you build another, cut off bottom of can, then just push one can inside the other.

Hello. How does the air circulate? Bottom to top or one hole in, all the cans and one way out?

Question: why not run the cans sideways instead of vertical to allow more time for heat to build? At the ends use 180-degree PVC to emulate more of a coil design like the A-coil in your furnace A/C system.

So does the fan only run when the sun hits the solar panel?
@daddymulk
@daddymulk 4 жыл бұрын
Ive been working on my own, smaller and thinner than this with good heat results inside the panel and coming out from fan but not getting enough air flow it seems though i need to sort fan control. Problem in UK we dont get enough sun for long enough time to progress testing and working on better designs, very frustrating as its very interesting working on these projects, just need to see that sun more.

The results from this are credible unlike many videos on here. Just shows how much air you need to shift to warm places up. Dont understand how some claim 50-80 deg C constantly with fan running and lots smaller than this but not many show them in use heating up a room and what temp its raised. This is great to see some actual results and interesting to see what temp panel is vs building, great stuff

This has got to be one of the worst places I've ever seen. If you like cold, being cold, and always needing a fire in the wood stove to stay warm then this for you. Wood log walls don't keep the cold out. Being next to a cold running stream, in a cold valley 10 months out of the year in normal times and spending tons of money just to stay warm in a uninsulated over built to large to maintain house is for you then go for it. While the land is pretty to look at in the spring and summer, it does not produce any income except elk which is infected with Mad Cow Disease and should not be eaten. Even if you are rich rich rich, this is a over priced worthless money pit in middle of a soon to be ice age.......throw that money away.......LOL

I only see a comment on using acid to remove the plastic coating. Not sure if you did that, first I have heard. However I was asking about the tool you used to hollow out the bottom of the can. Looks like a perfect circle

I used a metal hole saw, it's just a drill bit you can get at most hardware store for about 5 dollars. Looks like a saw blade, but it round and has a drill bit in the center.

Psssst!! (Hey little people, you don't need any fancy tubes, pop cans, or ductwork. It's unimportant, all you need is a sheet of black aluminum screen wire as an absorber!!) And you can make reflectors to be hooked onto the sides of your box with hinges using cheap 1/4" plywood white glue and shiny side aluminized mylar!! And high powered fans don't help, all it needs is a small computer fan. The heat won't transfer to the air any better at high speed, that just makes the air cooler! The sun angle is unimportant out to 20 degrees with flat black enamel, only PV cells need accurate orientation! ) -- a physicist

@Terry P. They don't have to be thick, 3-4" is all. Then you mount it on a exterior south facing wall. The black screen is suspended in the middle of the air space. Make holes in your exterior wall top and bottom and install the fan.

@Terry P. In the house it depends on the area of the collector and the outside temperature, but inside the collector it can be 120 - 140 F. The air coming out will be slightly less.

I tried it both ways and mine works way better if I suck the hot air out rather than blow cooler air from inside your garage through the heater. anyways just a thought.

As an HVAC guy, I've learned that the time the air stays in the heat exchanger is directly related to output temp. Throw a reo-stat(dimmer switch) on the fan and reduce speed slightly and watch temp rise. Just saying. I have an exchanger/heater almost the same size and on a clear day (central Alberta) I can get 165F on every day. At -20F I was consistently getting 120F. Decrease the fan speed on the coldest day and see what I mean.Again just saying. You have a great video too

You lost temperature because of the increased cfm of the new fan(and the angle of the heater outside). It'll blow cooler air, but will heat the room way better!

this may have been addressed but how bout if you changed the direction of the fan? that would take more heat from the ceiling, cycle it through the solar heater and run it back through and closer to the floor.
