I have 8HP on a kayak and the hydrofoil helped heaps. It stops the ass being pulled down too far as optimal engine height isn't possible. Mine is made from 5mm ally plate though.

I had a hydro foil It did help the boat come up on plane at the cost of making the boat go flat around turns and that sucks

Why does it say Vanguard on the side of your boat? Mine says Glastron.

I would only really recommend them for flat bottom boats really helps with trim control and staying on plane at significantly lower speeds on v hulls I haven't seen any noticeable reason to spend the money

I’ve got a 2025 170 Montauk, 115 Merc….I would not say it is underpowered or tough to get to plane…the bow rises like morning wood at 8-10mph, so I don’t feel I need one for plane power or time to plane….running in the Pacific Ocean, unless it is glass, I’m never at wot…honestly even getting to 25mph in the typical 2’ @ 12s is not something my wife wants to experience….all that to say I don’t feel I need performance in that sense. What I DO NEED is less roll…if I could slap a pair of pectoral fins on the hull, I would do it today. Coming out of Dana Point harbor yesterday at 3pm was not what I would call “bad”, but annoying….i’m almost certain that extra surface area on the fins of the hydrofoil will definitely settle the roll down a little. It has tp….there is more “lateral” surface area opposing the roll force of the water.

TLDNR: Stingray fin was worth installing 03 Bayliner 195 Capri with 3.0L 4 cyl. With 7 people in it, the boat was certainly no powerhouse, but got the job done. I had a decent uptick in planing ability and pulling a slolom skier out of the water. Can't say i noticed a drop in top-end speed. That was usually more to do with trim and prop choice. I did a few back and forth swaps with the (Stingray) foil and without just to prove my own point. I would say that the $100 chunk of paid was certainly worth it. Owned the boat 7 years, no lower unit damage, no noticeable problems whatsoever like the video is alluding to. Maybe it was meant to be click-bait?

Well, first of all you DO NOT try and get out of the hole with you engine trimmed UP!!! LOL... That's really stupid man. Always start with engine trimmed all the way DOWN and then trim up once you get on plane. Worthless video.
@lifewiththehamptons21915 ай бұрын
A hydrofoil will never decrease your top end speed, “IF” your motor is set at the correct height. If your motor is set at the correct height, your hydrofoil will not even be in the water at top speed, therefore it can’t affect the top speed. The cavitation plate should be about an inch above the water line at plane. This will also make your steering quicker, easier, and your boat will be more responsive. This is why Jack Plates are used.
