Which do you think would be better, common snapping turtle or alligator snipping turtle?
@rosyspexАй бұрын
Apologize for asking here but with all the AI generated articles on stuff nowadays I find conflicting info, can I get you to answer some questions? I just found a random hatchling Alligator snapper chilling in the curb, what should I feed it? It's shell is ~1.5" long atm. Yes, it was alone. Was like a bird dropped it out of the sky. Kinda mixed on keeping it, but if I leave it out right before winter, I'm afraid it'll freeze. I only have some small rocks I got from outside for it's tub right now, and some gravel a neighbor gave me, and no hide for it. Any tips?
@Alligator.commonsnappersАй бұрын
@@rosyspex What state do you live in? The reason I ask is it would be extremely rare to find a baby alligator snapping turtle out of the water. You can just let it go in a suitable location. If it’s truly an alligator snapping turtle they live in rivers only near the gulf states for the most part. Commons are much more common and in the majority of the United States. They are more often found in lakes and ponds.
@rosyspexАй бұрын
@@Alligator.commonsnappers Central IL. Yes, I know this is weird, I wasn't joking about it seeming a bird dropped it out of the sky. Which is actually part of the reason I picked it up, I was just like, 'It's cold out, and it doesn't seem like it's moving. It's a turtle, how bad can it be? I don't want it to freeze. It's also going to get ran over, it's in someone's driveway gutter.' Winters are brutal here too, so I figured 'Why not?' It was at least 100 yards from the nearest body of water, which itself is extremely limited, just a farm creek with a really steep incline. I didn't know I picked up a dinosaur until my neighbor ID'd it. As an aside, I lightly cooked some unsalted chicken for it, and diced it into tiny chunks ~head size, then shredded it with my nails. Lightly dispersed it in the tub I have it in and I've seen it eating some today. It didn't really eat for a couple days, this is day 3, and it's the first time I've seen it eat, I made a little hide with some broken branches. Have been making sure the tub gets cleaned 1-2 times a day. I also surrendered my heated blanket to keep the tub warm, it gets chilly in my room but it's never too cold in the tub right now. Are you sure it's safe for me to just let it go into a creek? I don't even think there's any fish in the creek behind my apartment, the farmers spray chemicals in the area all summer. I'm surrounded by cornfields, so I'm absolutely dumbfounded as to how it actually got here.
@Alligator.commonsnappersАй бұрын
@ Being that it’s nearly winter you could set it up for winter in the house. Alligator snapping turtles do go as far north as ill. but very rare. the water should be kept 80/82 for a baby ast. 78-80 is good for a common. either species likes to hide and dig into the sand.

Hey, great content. I want to ask for some help. I recently changed my tank around for a baby snapper 2 -3 months old. Switched basking spot to real driftwood, raised the water level to about 4-5” and added more gravel. Soon after he spent a day basking in the same spot and I thought he was dying. Turtle won't eat the pellets he used to and seems a little shy and sluggish. I basically switched everything back… fake log, lowered water back to 2-3” and small water change. Only eating frozen bloodworms or live crickets now, won’t eat the pellets he used to. Basking temp 90 mercury vapor bulb Water 78 Change in environment scare the turtle? Impaction from gravel? (He seems to know not to eat it) Thanks!
@Alligator.commonsnappers3 ай бұрын
@@austinanderson3393 Thanks. For a very young turtle like that I would certainly make sure they can get their head out of the water by just standing on their hind legs and sticking their head up. Everything seems good with the set up except I’d recommend no pebbles and going to sand. When they are older they can easily pass pebbles but very young turtles can accidentally swallow pebbles and it could cause issues in their digestive system. They like to dig down in the sand and sand is easier than rocks. I always keep baby turtles in a bit warmer water say 80-82. Once past a year old I’ll drop to 78ish. Mine are all 2+ years old so I have the water at 76ish.
