Steam locomotive whistles in the UK sound either weird or straight up awful in my opinion since they're mostly very high pitched. The 57s use the same 645 prime mover found on GP39s and GP39-2s, making them Geeps in a technical sense while having a C-C wheel arrangement Gotta love some nice lite power! One of my favorite things to see on the railroads
@StaffsTransport9 күн бұрын
I think all engines have their own different whistles. The A4 was mostly scream pitched but sounded amazing at speed. Some A3 types had low two tone whistles, and black fives had mostly a low toned sound. You sound like my grandad who once remarked to a US engine driver "I bet you can play a fair tune on that!" in the 1950s on the N&W.

Perfect position for the stop Ian, beautiful engine, looks like SJ had a good time sliding down that handrail 👍😂

@richierich1258 cheers, it was a fabulous locomotive and worth the trip there to see her. SJ always loves the handrails, back in the old days when Dan was a kid we used to race her and the crocodile (SC) down the rails to the delight of many customers and station staff. Happy days!

@@StaffsTransport It's a good spot, yes, the 37 that brought up the rear yesterday i caught a few weeks ago heading the test train and it was really blasting along, loud enough to feel it pound on your chest....

The southern portion of the BNSF Scenic Sub sees lots of trains, from Amtrak Cascades, the 7 & 8 (Empire Builder) Sounder, and plenty of BNSF trains The 37s sound like straight piped semis, and I think BR intentionally did that so railfans can get the Peterbilt and Kenworth experience in a locomotive, lol
@StaffsTransport11 күн бұрын
They sounded rubbish tonight, the last few times there's been no thrash. Used to really accelerate through but now they just glide. I feel like taking a guitar and amplifier just to give it some sound lol

Amtrak's still testing the new Acela trainsets, but CalTrain began putting their Stadler KISS EMUs on revenue service. The original Acela sets still run pretty well, and I love their hybrid K5LAs!

I've not seen them yet. The only Amtrak line I watch on railfan is Paradise PA.

They aren't found on the Keystone corridor, where the Strasburg Railroad is. They're found on the Northeast Corridor. If you ever visit New Jersey, you'll find the Acela alongside the Northeast Regional and NJ Transit

@StaffsTransport29 күн бұрын
I love the Norfolk Southern as it was part of the old NW which was my grandads favourite when he visited USA. However, I watch a lot of BNSF railcams and their engines are superb.
@snocoelevators28 күн бұрын
BNSF has some neat locomotives from both sides of the merger, such as B40-8Ws from Santa Fe, and triclops SD60Ms from Burlington Northern. Delta Yard has a diverse fleet of locomotives that haul the H-EVEROO, a unit garbage train

A locomotive that Scotsman met up with is still operational, that being Southern 4501, a mikado. Scotsman looked like a mogul when it was towed by GG1s, a U23B, and a SD45.

I'd imagine the UK's locomotives wearing BR's blue and yellow scheme to have CSX's logo on the sides and on the noses and instead of the two tone horn, they're equipped with K5LAs and a bell (like most YN3 locomotives on CSX's roster)
@StaffsTransportАй бұрын
Not many left in blue and yellow. During the 1970s and 80s they were mostly like that as the rail network was nationalised. With the different companies owning locos now there are many liveries. The blue and yellow is popular with enthusiasts, older diesels owned by excursion companies are often repainted in the old colours.
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
Do you think the UK should adapt the US's railroading practices and their loading gauge? (that way the SW1001s aren't confined to their quarries)
@StaffsTransportАй бұрын
It would be too expensive. Too many bridges. And (probably) not the traffic to justify it.

Great hornshow by that GBRF EMD leader at the beginning! Since you watch Virtual Railfan, I'd recommend watching the Skykomish and Chehalis railcams! You can see 737 fuselage trains on Skykomish, and various trains on Chehalis railcam, including BNSF and UP trash trains, as well as a variety of motive power and different horns!

70012's in Erie testing. It has to be coupled to GECX 809 (a locomotive that's used as a coupler bridge car) in order to run with a pair of UP AC44 rebuilds
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
When it comes to modern freight locomotives in the US, they look similar at first glance, but there's a few differences To tell a Dash 9 from a GEVO, look at the radiator. The radiator on a D9 is smaller than one on a GEVO To tell a D9 from an AC44CW, there's a vent on the left side below the number, but when it comes to some AC44s on CSX, CPKC, look at the trucks. On BNSF, the AC44s are numbered in the 5600s To tell a GEVO from an SD70ACe, look at the cab. The ACe has a notched nose while a GEVO doesn't

Out of all the commuter railroads in the US, Metra has a diverse fleet of locomotives! From F40PHs, F59PHs, F59PHIs, MP36PH-3s, and their new SD70MACHs (which are rebuilt SD70MACs) Surprised that the UK has lots of mainline excursions (both with older steam locomotives and modern diesel and electric locomotives)
@StaffsTransportАй бұрын
There's a huge market for nostalgia and dining trains over here.
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
Definitely seems like it! We don't have a bunch of mainline excursions like the UK, but we have lots of shortline railroads with classic EMDs and GEs, and heritage railroads with vintage steam locomotives! One of those heritage railroads operates a locomotive that Flying Scotsman met during its US excursion trip, and that's Southern 4501!
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
If you were out trackside in the US, what Class 1 railroad would you want to go railfanning on one of their subdivisions?
@StaffsTransportАй бұрын
I'd like to see plenty of freight, coal if possible, and perhaps some older diesels. I watch some of the Railfan streams and enjoy those. Of course I like the Strasburg Railroad cam at Paradise as it has the main Amtrack line too, although not much freight. Western Maryland cam also nice to see the steam locomotives.
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
BNSF's Delta Yard has a great pool of locomotives that haul trains throughout the Scenic, Bellingham, and Seattle subs. There's lots of different Geeps, SD75Ms, SD60Ms, all with different schemes!
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
This is like a GP7 or U23B hauling an excursion on one of the many subdivisions on all 6 Class 1 railroads. Usually in the US, steam locomotive stars like UP 844, SP 4449, or N&W 611 go out on mainline excursions. I think an excursion using classic GEs and EMDs would definitely be cool!

Baretable trains are not a common sight on the Class 1 railroads, but hotshot intermodals are! If you visit the US, check out Horsehoe Curve or BNSF's Southern Transcon. Those places have lots of trains!
@StaffsTransportАй бұрын
I've heard of Horsehoe curve anyway!
@snocoelevatorsАй бұрын
Horseshoe Curve has a 1.8% grade, so Norfolk Southern has these helper sets push or pull the trains at Horseshoe. They're either 1-2 pairs of SD40Es or a pair SD70ACus
