The number was always prime, but now it has become explicitly known to be definitely prime by humanity.

And...? How does this help with anything? Would be great if you add the practical use of it and how it advances math in someway so the everyday person can understand the significance.

Why are we searching for prime numbers? Do they have a special purpose in mathematics?

V much agree that cool maths is its own reward. I studied four years of Latin in high school, all the way up to college-level Virgil. I went on to study linguistics, a rare "useful" field where you'd think all that Latin grammar was helpful, right? Nope, I never had to touch or think abt Latin again. But also, I loved reading the Aeneid. It was tremendously rewarding in & of itself, & we shouldn't cordon off human knowledge just bc we don't have a use case for it to make billionaires richer (& that hardly stops billionaires from investing in useless tech like blockchains besides).

I like the passion. I hate the topic. Giving your computing power to find primes seems like a waste of resources including water used to cool server farms that do these calculations.
@Ayliean4 күн бұрын
Is this a topic that you know loads about? I don’t really know a lot about servers etc. but obvs I’ve heard all the headlines about AI bad for the environment - so it would be cool to work out the environmental impact of finding a prime number. My gut feeling is that it won’t be as bad as how some companies operate, but it would be good to know! Send me any resources :)
@troubadour06633 күн бұрын
@@Ayliean I don't know what resources will help but the system of computation is very similar to AI generation from prompts. What I can provide you with is the logistics of server farms and essentially their drain on resources. Let me know if that's something you are interested about.

I am genuinely curious. How does this benefit humanity? If it’s just mathematicians nerding out, y’all go and enjoy it. But to me it seems a bit inconsequential? Like no big discovery will be made because of this?

“I’d love to show it…” In base two, it’s all ones! (‘cause literally *any* 2^x-1 where x is an integer greater than zero is all ones in base 2-just like in base 10, with a similar x, 10^x -1 is all nines)
